Book Organization in Free Recall Learning

Download or read book Organization in Free Recall Learning written by Harold Gelfand and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiment was designed to validate the use of interresponse times (IRTs) as an index of organization in learning, and to determine whether the effects of input contiguity on organization and recall are due to direct representations of contiguity relationships in S's functional organization, or to the indirect potentiating effect of contiguity on item-dependent organization. Presentation orders and semantic relatedness among words were varied factorially in a multitrial free recall task. Words were either members of a superordinate category, or unrelated. Members of groups were either blocked or randomly dispersed on individual trials, and presentation orders were either constant or varied across trials. The results indicated that IRTs provide similar and supplementary information about organization when compared with indices of clustering and subjective organization. Differences in IRTs between members of different categories as compared to members of the same category were related to the degree of clustering according to those categories. The IRT between two words was related to the number of previous recall trials on which the pair occurred together as well as to the probability of adjacent occurrence of the pair on subsequent trials. On Trial 1, an interaction of contiguity and semantic relationships was obtained with clustering scores, but not with recall scores. In the multitrial situation, intratrial contiguity was effective for related words, and intertrial contiguity consistency was effective for unrelated words. There was no evidence for direct contiguity effects. Other effects of multiple potential bases for interitem relationships were considered. (Author).

Book Principles of Learning and Memory

Download or read book Principles of Learning and Memory written by Robert G. Crowder and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark volume from 1976, Robert Crowder presents an organized review of the concepts that guide the study of learning and memory. The basic organization of the book is theoretical, rather than historical or methodological, and there are four broad sections. The first is on coding in memory, and the relations between memory and vision, audition and speech. The second section focuses on short-term memory. The third is loosely organized around the topic of learning. The final section includes chapters that focus on the process of retrieval, with special attention to recognition and to serial organization. Crowder presumes no prior knowledge of the subject matter on the part of the reader; technical terms are kept to a minimum, and he makes every effort to introduce them carefully when they first occur. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses.

Book Memory Development Between Two and Twenty

Download or read book Memory Development Between Two and Twenty written by Wolfgang Schneider and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, two scholars with different but complementary interests in memory and cognitive development present a careful overview of the field of memory development from the perspective of their theory of good strategy use. In addition to treating broad topics of general interest, such as knowledge, cognitive capacity, and metamemory, the text also examines controversial issues surrounding the development of children's memory--particularly eyewitness memory. The result is a coherent statement about memory development accompanied by commentary on the study of memory development, plus applications of the theory and research in the area. This book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers and other professionals interested in child and adolescent memory.

Book Concepts Results and Applications

Download or read book Concepts Results and Applications written by E. Klinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stream of our consciousness contains an almost unceasing parade of sensation-like experiences, even in the absence of any external stimulation to produce them. We experience picture-like things, sound-like things, and more; our experiences can resemble any of our sense modalities. These experiences are what we refer to by the phrase "mental imagery." The images need not be vivid. People who doubt that they experience visual imagery are often persuaded by a simple exercise: count the windows of the house in which you live. Nearly everyone performs this task by walking around the house in imagination while counting windows, or by walking through the house counting them from the inside. The imaginary windows seem to be set in visual space. There is a temptation to point at them with an index finger while one counts, even though the images may never become vivid enough to seem like an actual visual experience. But if they seem set in visual space, if they can be pointed at, they clearly constitute a sensory-like experience in some meaningful way.
