Twenty-five practitioners from varied backgrounds and disciplines, representing 14 colleges and universities, outline alternative strategies they use with diverse students in their institutions of higher education. Some of these practitioners have been using learning-style for decades. Others have conducted research to test the various tenets of the Dunn and Dunn Learning- Style Model, and a few, only for the past five years, have begun providing instructional strategies that are congruent with their students' preferences. A road map is provided for college faculty to assist them in moving toward accommodating students' learning-style strengths by comparing the major theories of learning styles that range from uni- to multi-dimensional in scope. Strategies include: identifying and administering valid and reliable instruments for assessing college students' learning styles, interpreting assessment results so that each student becomes aware of his/her own strengths and is provided a computer-generated prescription for improving their study skills and successfully completing assignments, designing instruction to respond to both global and analytic students' processing styles, developing course content and materials to accommodate the learning-style preferences of college students, and evaluating the impact of learning-styles-based instruction.

More specifically, this analysis is based on the notions that: 1) parent involvement in inner city schools present unique challenges that are different from the traditional middle class perspective; 2) there is value in a cooperative approach between parents, teachers, and administrators that places the student at the center of each major discussion and decision; and 3) illustrates that parental involvement is a real perspective and not just rhetorical jargon. Although the focus of this book is in increasing parent involvement in inner city schools, readers must be mindful that the ultimate objective for this work and others like it is the successful educating of all children, so that they graduate from high school, and move into higher education, or into the workforce. Parent involvement by itself will not ensure academic success of children, but, combined with many strategies, including a clear understanding of the differences between an inner city school environment and a middle class school setting, effective teaching, sound and relevant curricula, safe and secure learning environment, and visionary leadership, children attending inner city schools can be just as effective as those in middle class school settings.

Book excerpt: Research on the effectiveness of educational interventions usually is based on samples of students who remain in the same school over time. In contrast, most students transfer schools at least once during their K-12 school career, not including normative transfers such as those from elementary to middle school (Rumberger, 2002). Even when looking at just the two years prior to the 1998 NAEP, one-third of fourth graders, 19 percent of eighth graders, and 10 percent of twelfth graders had changed schools at least once (Rumberger, 2002). Mobility is higher among low-income and minority populations (Rumberger, 2002). While many studies have investigated the relationship of student mobility with achievement (Alexander, Entwisle, & Dauber, 1996; Reynolds, Chen, & Herbers, 2009; Rumberger & Larson, 1998; Tucker, Marx, & Long, 1998), the degree to which this relationship might vary among schools has not been fully investigated; in other words, are some schools more effective with mobile students than others? Data for the current study were obtained from a prior study of student mobility in a mid-Atlantic state that took place in 2001-2003. (A full description is available in Rogers, 2004.) This study examined complete school history data from a statewide sample of students in order to investigate the relationship between mobility and reading achievement in the sixth year of schooling. Cross-classified, multiple membership models were used to accurately account for students' membership in multiple schools during Year 6 as well as prior years. The relationship between mobility and reading scores was found to be non-significant on average, but examination of the variance components revealed that the impact of student mobility on reading achievement varied significantly among schools. Furthermore, the covariance estimate suggests that mobility gaps are especially large in schools with higher overall levels of achievement. This suggests that further research is necessary that more closely examines the contextual effects of mobility. Tables are appended.
