In this study, I examine the role of different factors that contribute to the correlation of socioeconomic status and academic achievement in middle school students. ... The majority of the data to be analyzed will be gathered via questionnaire from 6 seventh grade students, to be selected from the same urban middle school, and 2 students from each academic level (1, 2, and 3). In addition, data will be collected from questionnaires from 3 core academic teachers that teach on the middle school level. Other forms of data will be taken from MCAS and Benchmark Diagnostic results from 2014/2015. This data will lead to further conclusions about outside factors affecting students' achievement beyond socioeconomic status.

Alternatively, reform and restructuring have led many people in schools to create their own agenda and ask, ‘How do we know that what we are doing makes a positive difference to our pupils?’ and, ‘What can we do to provide pupils with the best possible education?’ This paper explores the two paradigms that underpin notions of school effectiveness and school improvement. We start with their definitions and aims. Key factors of effectiveness and improvement are examined and fundamental issues discussed. We conclude with a description of attempts to link the two areas of work.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare student achievement, as assessed by the ABC (Accountability, Basics, Local Control) end of grade tests, of students in different sized schools and of different socioeconomic backgrounds. The population consisted of 379 middle schools in North Carolina. Data were gathered from the 2006-2007 school year. Several ttests for independent samples, analyses of variance, and chi square analyses were used to identify relationships between variables. The measures of growth used were the change ratio, which is used to determine high growth status and mean growth, which is used to determine expected growth or no recognition status. No recognition is the designation given to those schools that do not meet expected growth. The study showed no significant relationship between school size and academic growth status. Similarly, there was no significant difference in the observed proportions and the hypothesized proportions of different sized schools in terms of academic growth status. There was a significant relationship between socioeconomic status and academic growth status; high socioeconomic status schools had higher change ratios and higher mean growth than did low socioeconomic status schools. The study showed a significant difference in the observed and hypothesized proportions of the growth levels; high socioeconomic status schools had more schools designated high growth than no recognition and low socioeconomic status schools had more schools designated no recognition than high growth. The results of this study indicated that as educators in North Carolina continue to focus on achievement levels of all students, particular attention should be paid to those schools with higher percentages of students receiving free or reduced price meals. To narrow the academic gap between students in high and low socioeconomic status schools, attention should be given to the particular needs and traits of children from high poverty backg.

Understood in the sense of education being “generally okay” , or rather, most frequently, as “not okay”. Perhaps there is an overruling nostalgic view that formerly education was better than today. In scholarly discourse there are those who maintain that the quality of education is an illusive term, with varying interpretations in different settings and by different stakeholders. In this book the complexity of the concept of education quality is recognized, but a conceptual framework is presented that makes quality, despite its complexity, amenable to rational and empirical analysis. Productivity, equity, effectiveness, efficiency and responsiveness of education systems are seen as key facets of quality. A concrete set of indicators is presented that makes for the measurement of these quality facets. In the second part of the book the quality framework is applied to an analysis of the quality of education in the Netherlands. Common sense in the Netherlands is dominated by the view that the quality of education is a course for serious concern. Some recent quality reviews take the same pessimistic outlook. However, the current overview of indicators on the Dutch system, seen from an international perspective, presents a picture that is much more positive. Still there is always room for improvement, in the case of the Netherlands this should probably be sought in diminishing the selectivity of the system as a way to improve participation in higher education.

Good standards-based classroom teaching, supportive teachers, administrators, and parents, and a motivated student all make for a high achieving student. But what is the relationship of the school’s climate to the achievement level? Does the student’s socioeconomic status affect academic achievement? This study collected data from 431 traditional public middle schools in the state of Georgia serving students in Grade 6 through Grade 8 exclusively during the 2017-18 school year. A stepwise multiple regression was used to examine the relationships in both research questions. The stepwise process allowed for the researcher to increase accuracy of results by prioritizing predicting variables of Free/Reduced rate, Climate score, and Administrator Attendance entered by correlation rate with the outcome variables of Mathematics Mean Scale Score and English/Language Arts Mean Scale Score. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of school climate and student achievement at the middle school level in Georgia. A quantitative predictive research design was used to measure the relationship between the variables. A multiple regression analysis in this study will provide information for school principals as to the significance of the relationship and of the climate of the school on student achievement. The results of the study will be a valuable resource for Georgia school leaders who must respond to the demands for increased student achievement while attracting and retaining teachers. If school climate has a significant impact on student achievement, then Georgia school leaders may develop plans to improve school climate (Fuller, Young, & Baker, 2010) and simultaneously create and sustain high-quality teams in response to increasing teacher vacancies and decreasing teacher applicants as reported by the Georgia Department of Education (Owens, 2015).

Elizabeth Ananat, Anna Gassman-Pines, and Christina Gibson-Davis show that local job losses such as those caused by plant closings can lower the test scores of students with low socioeconomic status, even students whose parents have not lost their jobs. They find that community-wide stress is most likely the culprit. Analyzing the math achievement of elementary school children, Stephen Raudenbush, Marshall Jean, and Emily Art find that students learn less if they attend schools with high student turnover during the school year – a common occurrence in poor schools. And David Kirk and Robert Sampson show that teacher commitment, parental involvement, and student achievement in schools in high-crime neighborhoods all tend to be low. For generations of Americans, public education provided the springboard to upward mobility. This pioneering volume casts a stark light on the ways rising inequality may now be compromising schools’ functioning, and with it the promise of equal opportunity in America.

Book excerpt: This open-access book focuses on trends in educational inequality using twenty years of grade 8 student data collected from 13 education systems by the IEAs Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) between 1995 and 2015. While the overall positive association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement is well documented in the literature, the magnitude of this relationship is contingent on social contexts and is expected to vary by education system. Research on how such associations differ across societies and how the strength of these relationships has changed over time is limited. This study, therefore, addresses an important research and policy question by examining changes in the inequality of educational outcomes due to SES over this 20-year period, and also examines the extent to which the performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds has improved over time in each education system. Education systems generally aim to narrow the achievement gap between low- and high-SES students and to improve the performance of disadvantaged students. However, the lack of quantifiable and comprehensible measures makes it difficult to assess and monitor the effect of such efforts. In this study, a novel measure of SES that is consistent across all TIMSS cycles allows students to be categorized into different socioeconomic groups. This measure of SES may also contribute to future research using TIMSS trend data. Readers will gain new insight into how educational inequality has changed in the education systems studied and how such change may relate to the more complex picture of macroeconomic changes in those societies.
