Book Attitudes Toward Aging Sexual Expression in Nursing Homes

Download or read book Attitudes Toward Aging Sexual Expression in Nursing Homes written by Angela Marie Schubert and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research on older adults in nursing home facilities has focused on medical care, safe and dignifying living conditions, quality of life variables, and assessment of senility and sexual disinhibition, or inappropriate sexual behavior, almost all of which was conducted using quantitative methods. The aim of this study was to give voice to ten older adults (six men and four women) who had been living in a nursing home and the four staff (one social worker and three registered nurses) who cared for them. This study aimed to explore sexual expression as it was perceived, experienced, and practiced by those older adults. Participants were asked to give their accounts during semi-structured interviews. The succeeding transcripts were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis and seven emergent themes were identified, including (1) demographic differences, (2) gender differences related to marriage and sexual interest, (3) self as a sexual being, (4) updating the sexual script, (5) affordances to sexual expression, (6) barriers to sexual expression, and (7) actual and perceived relationships with nursing staff and others. Nursing staff were also interviewed to elaborate on the sexual expression in nursing homes. Overall, the findings illustrated older adult sexual expression to be a complex human condition that can be influenced by the nursing home environment, self-ascribed ageist views toward sexual expression, and/or identification as a sexual being. These findings are compared to previous research and future directions are suggested.

Book Nurse Practitioners Attitudes and Beliefs about Sexual Activity Among Older Adults

Download or read book Nurse Practitioners Attitudes and Beliefs about Sexual Activity Among Older Adults written by Valerie Mena and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to investigate the attitudes and beliefs about older adults' sexual activity among various nurse practitioner specialties. The data were obtained from two California Association of Nurse Practitioners chapter general meetings. Twenty-seven nurse practitioners participated in answering the demographic data sheet and the modified Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (SABS). The study compared family nurse practitioners (n = 19) to other nurse practitioner specialties (n = 8). The findings showed no significant difference in the total and individual SABS scores, but the nurse practitioners reported that they believed that older adult patients did not expect nurse practitioners to ask about their sexual concerns. Implications of the study for practice and for further research were included.

Book Religion Religious Ethics and Nursing

Download or read book Religion Religious Ethics and Nursing written by Marsha D. Fowler, PhD, MDiv, MS, and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[This] is a book that challenges you to step back and broaden your thinking about religion in general and religion in nursing...Nurses at all levels will appreciate the applications to nursing practice, theory, and research."--Journal of Christian Nursing "The Reverend Dr. Marsha Fowler and her colleagues have written a landmark book that will change and enlighten the discourse on religion and spirituality in nursing. The authors address the awkward silence on religion in nursing theory and education and with insightful scholarship move beyond the current level of knowledge and limited discourse on religion in nursing theory, education and practice. This book is path-breaking in that [it] gives many new ways to think about the relationships between ethics, health, caregiving, moral imagination, religion and spirituality." From the Foreword by Patricia Benner, PhD, RN, FAAN Professor Emerita of Nursing Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Nursing University of California, San Francisco The past 25 years have witnessed an escalating discussion on the role of spirituality within health care. This scholarly volume is rooted in the belief that not only is religion integral to nursing care, but the religious beliefs of both nurse and patient can significantly influence care and its outcome. It offers an in-depth analysis of the ways in which religion influences the discipline of nursing, its practitioners, and treatment outcomes. Through the contributions of an international cadre of nurse scholars representing the world's major religious traditions, the book explores how theories, history and theologies shape the discipline, bioethical decision making, and the perspective of the nurse or patient who embraces a particular religion. It examines the commonalities between the values and thinking of nursing and religion and identifies basic domains in which additional research is necessary. The authors believe that ultimately, scholarly dialogue on the relationship between religion and nursing will foster and enhance nursing practice that is ethical and respectful of personal values. Key Features: Offers in-depth analysis of how religion influences the discipline of nursing, its practitioners, and treatment outcomes Uses critical theories to explore the intersections of religion, ethics, culture, health, gender, power, and health policy Includes an overview of all major world religions Focuses on the implications of religion for nursing practice rather than nursing interventions Designed for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students, nurse academicians and clinicians

Book Exploring the Perceptions of Nursing Personnel Towards the Elderly

Download or read book Exploring the Perceptions of Nursing Personnel Towards the Elderly written by Romy L. Hefner and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this archival research is to analyze data previously collected, examining attitudes among nursing personnel towards the elderly with regard to possible age and gender biases. Little research has been done exploring the possible combined impact of age and gender biases. Furthermore, although research on ageism in nursing has found significant correlations between nurses' attitudes and education and employment agency, many of these studies are dated and results are contradictory. This study examined nursing personnel's attitudes toward the elderly by pairing a specific case description with an attitudinal scale. The data was collected from 105 registered nurses and nursing assistants employed in nursing homes and home health care agencies in the Chicago area. Each participant received one of two possible case vignettes. Both cases describe an older adult, which varies only by gender. Following is the Aging Semantic Differential Scale, assessing the participants' perceptions of the adult in the vignette on three dimensions, effectiveness, independence, and personal acceptability. A demographic survey was also administered. The main question of this study is whether reading a story of a male or female elder influences attitudes on the Aging Semantic Differential Scale. Another set of questions involves the effect of training and place of employment on attitudes toward the elderly. Univariate analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed to aid in interpretation of significant differences on each of the three scales. No gender differences or stereotypes toward the elderly were found in this sample either because the Aging Semantic Differential Scale was not sensitive enough to assess them or possibly because with age, gender identity becomes tangential and age becomes the dominant categorizing factor. Significant training differences were also found indicating that certified nursing assistants had more positive attitudes toward the elderly than registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants in home health care agencies had the most positive attitudes. The professional socialization process and environmental differences are discussed as explanations for these results.
