Praise for the third edition: “This is an outstanding edition of this book. It has great relevance for learning about, developing, and using middle range theories. It is very user friendly, yet scholarly." Score: 90, 4 Stars -Doody's Medical Reviews The fourth edition of this invaluable publication on middle range theory in nursing reflects the most current theoretical advances in the field. With two additional chapters, new content incorporates exemplars that bridge middle range theory to advanced nursing practice and research. Additional content for DNP and PhD programs includes two new theories: Bureaucratic Caring and Self-Care of Chronic Illness. This user-friendly text stresses how theory informs practice and research in the everyday world of nursing. Divided into four sections, content sets the stage for understanding middle range theory by elaborating on disciplinary perspectives, an organizing framework, and evaluation of the theory. Middle Range Theory for Nursing, Fourth Edition presents a broad spectrum of 13 middle range theories. Each theory is broken down into its purpose, development, and conceptual underpinnings, and includes a model demonstrating the relationships among the concepts, and the use of the theory in research and practice. In addition, concept building for research through the lens of middle range theory is presented as a rigorous 10-phase process that moves from a practice story to a conceptual foundation. Exemplars are presented clarifying both the concept building process and the use of conceptual structures in research design. This new edition remains an essential text for advanced practice, theory, and research courses. Book A Statewide Study of Nursing Faculty Intent to Leave Academe

Download or read book A Statewide Study of Nursing Faculty Intent to Leave Academe written by Kathleen Ann Gravens and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National predictions forecast a significant shortage of registered nurses by 2020, with one of the major causes of the shortage being a lack of qualified nurse educators. Predictions for the state of Ohio mirror the national picture; however, there is little research about nursing faculty in the state, or their intentions related to their academic role. This dissertation analyzed what factors, if any, predict intent to leave academe within five years. Participants included 426 full-time nursing faculty from 60 public and private, not-for-profit nursing programs in Ohio, including both pre-licensure and advanced degree programs. A web-based survey was used to obtain faculty data. Blocked stepwise regression analysis revealed four significant predictors of intent to leave academe within five years - age, years ago highest nursing and non-nursing degree were earned, and overall satisfaction. The results of the research can be used to guide the development of strategies to retain nursing faculty in academe in the state of Ohio. Future research should be encouraged to explore the underlying issue related to the faculty shortage and its implications for the nursing shortage.

Book Perceived Barriers Influencing the Conduct of Research and Writing for Publication by Non tenured Nurse Faculty in Academia

Download or read book Perceived Barriers Influencing the Conduct of Research and Writing for Publication by Non tenured Nurse Faculty in Academia written by Deborah Lynn Whittaker and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe and understand the perceived barriers influencing the conduct of research and writing for publication by non-tenured nurse faculty. It was not known what the barriers were, or how they influenced the faculty in their publication efforts. Theoretical foundations were Benner's novice to expert theory and Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Research questions were: 1) For non-tenured nurse faculty, what were the perceived barriers to their ability to conduct research and writing for publication? and 2) How were non-tenured nurse faculty influenced by perceived barriers to the conduct of research and writing for publication? Fifteen non-tenured nurse faculty who taught full-time in academic nursing programs located in eastern Pennsylvania participated. Sources of data included two questionnaires, interviews, and a focus group. Responses were read, coded, and thematically analyzed by noting meaningful patterns of similarities, differences, repetitions and frequently used words. Barriers included a lack of time, knowledge, comfort, support, experience, and mentoring. Feelings of insecurity, demotivation, and a preference for teamwork and collaboration were described. Findings included a conflict of cultures, clinical and academic, including a desire for clinical practice to be considered scholarship. Multiple aspects of external and internal influences interacted and inhibited nurse faculty scholarly activity. The study participants' valued, appreciated, and wanted the support needed for successful scholarship. Implications of the study included the potential to affect changes by nurse faculty and institutional leadership to develop interventions to assist writing efforts.

Book Career Commitment of Teaching Nurse Faculty

Download or read book Career Commitment of Teaching Nurse Faculty written by Malena King-Jones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among education, teacher self-efficacy, and career satisfaction of nurse faculty to career commitment. The specific aim of this study is to propose and test a model that explains the variables needed to increase the career commitment of nurse faculty in academia. The hypotheses included the following statements. In the teaching nurse faculty population: H1. Education is (a) positively directly related to career commitment, (b) positively indirectly related to career commitment via career satisfaction and (c) positively indirectly related to career commitment via teacher self-efficacy. H2. Teacher self-efficacy is (a) positively directly related to career commitment and (b) positively indirectly related to career commitment via career satisfaction. H3. Career satisfaction is positively directly related to career commitment. This study used a cross-sectional survey design. An online survey containing three scales: career satisfaction, teacher efficacy beliefs and career commitment, was developed to obtain data. The analytic sample consisted of nurse faculty (N=470) from Northeastern and Southern Regions of the United States accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Descriptive analyses were conducted and assumptions were tested. Multivariate regressions and a path analysis were utilized to determine the relationships of the variables to career commitment. Teacher self-efficacy and career satisfaction both predict career commitment in the teaching nurse faculty sample. Career satisfaction did mediate the teacher self-efficacy and career commitment relationship in the teaching nurse faculty sample. The relationship between career satisfaction and career commitment was significant and statistically positive in the teaching nurse faculty. Education was not directly or indirectly related to career commitment in the teaching nurse faculty sample. However, education measured by the number of credit hours did significantly predict teacher self-efficacy. Model fit indices confirm the Career Commitment for Teaching Nurse Faculty model fits the data. This study is important to the increase and development of graduate nursing education programs. The results may guide the education needs of qualified, confident and satisfied nurse faculty who are committed to their careers, thus providing valuable insight to the education needs of nurse faculty.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to examine the development of self-efficacy in novice nursing faculty members' transitioning to classroom teaching. Bandura's (1997) Self-Efficacy Theory was the theoretical basis for this study. Through a series of interviews, two themes and four sub-themes were identified: i) "Transitioning to the Classroom" and ii) "Nursing is Not Teaching". These themes highlighted factors that fostered and hindered the development of self-efficacy through the participants' transition to the classroom. Factors that influenced successful transition and development of self-efficacy included providing an orientation, mentorship, team teaching, and experience teaching in the classroom. Factors that hindered self-efficacy development included anxiety and the professional gap between nursing and teaching roles. Recommendations for nursing education and for future research were suggested. These findings provide further support to the literature on professional role transition to the educator role and Bandura's (1997) Self-Efficacy Theory.

Book The effects of academic job experiences and perceptions of novice nursing faculty on nursing faculty retention

Download or read book The effects of academic job experiences and perceptions of novice nursing faculty on nursing faculty retention written by Angela Jupiter-McCon and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The transition from the bedside to the classroom can be a difficult experience for novice nursing faculty. Because novice nursing faculty members often have limited educational preparation in classroom instruction skills, the transition can be chaotic and filled with unexpected issues. The purpose of this research was to explore the perceptions of novice nursing faculty within their first three years of academia and how those perceptions affect retention. Qualitative phenomenological research was conducted to explore the perceptions of the novice nursing faculty after assumption of the teaching role. Participant inclusion for this study was limited to novice nursing faculty members in the Southern Coastal Region with three years or less experience. Lived experiences were described using open-ended interviews which provided the opportunity for narratives that shared experiences of the transition process from clinician to nursing educator. Several key themes were revealed. The findings suggested perceptions of job satisfaction, workload, guidance, salary, and collegiality affect retention"-- Abstract from thesis.

Book Health Promotion in Health Care Vital Theories and Research

Download or read book Health Promotion in Health Care Vital Theories and Research written by Gørill Haugan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access textbook represents a vital contribution to global health education, offering insights into health promotion as part of patient care for bachelor’s and master’s students in health care (nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiotherapists, social care workers etc.) as well as health care professionals, and providing an overview of the field of health science and health promotion for PhD students and researchers. Written by leading experts from seven countries in Europe, America, Africa and Asia, it first discusses the theory of health promotion and vital concepts. It then presents updated evidence-based health promotion approaches in different populations (people with chronic diseases, cancer, heart failure, dementia, mental disorders, long-term ICU patients, elderly individuals, families with newborn babies, palliative care patients) and examines different health promotion approaches integrated into primary care services. This edited scientific anthology provides much-needed knowledge, translating research into guidelines for practice. Today’s medical approaches are highly developed; however, patients are human beings with a wholeness of body-mind-spirit. As such, providing high-quality and effective health care requires a holistic physical-psychological-social-spiritual model of health care is required. A great number of patients, both in hospitals and in primary health care, suffer from the lack of a holistic oriented health approach: Their condition is treated, but they feel scared, helpless and lonely. Health promotion focuses on improving people’s health in spite of illnesses. Accordingly, health care that supports/promotes patients’ health by identifying their health resources will result in better patient outcomes: shorter hospital stays, less re-hospitalization, being better able to cope at home and improved well-being, which in turn lead to lower health-care costs. This scientific anthology is the first of its kind, in that it connects health promotion with the salutogenic theory of health throughout the chapters. the authors here expand the understanding of health promotion beyond health protection and disease prevention. The book focuses on describing and explaining salutogenesis as an umbrella concept, not only as the key concept of sense of coherence.

It is an excellent addition to the nursing literature." Score: 95, 4 Stars. --Doody's "Understanding and recognizing transitions are at the heart of health care reform and this current edition, with its numerous clinical examples and descriptions of nursing interventions, provides important lessons that can and should be incorporated into health policy. It is a brilliant book and an important contribution to nursing theory." Kathleen Dracup, RN, DNSc Dean and Professor, School of Nursing University of California San Francisco Afaf Meleis, the dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, presents for the first time in a single volume her original "transitions theory" that integrates middle-range theory to assist nurses in facilitating positive transitions for patients, families, and communities. Nurses are consistently relied on to coach and support patients going through major life transitions, such as illness, recovery, pregnancy, old age, and many more. A collection of over 50 articles published from 1975 through 2007 and five newly commissioned articles, Transitions Theory covers developmental, situational, health and illness, organizational, and therapeutic transitions. Each section includes an introduction written by Dr. Meleis in which she offers her historical and practical perspective on transitions. Many of the articles consider the transitional experiences of ethnically diverse patients, women, the elderly, and other minority populations. Key Topics Discussed: Situational transitions, including discharge and relocation transitions (hospital to home, stroke recovery) and immigration transitions (psychological adaptation and impact of migration on family health) Educational transitions, including professional transitions (from RN to BSN and student to professional) Health and illness transitions, including self-care post heart failure, living with chronic illness, living with early dementia, and accepting palliative care Organization transitions, including role transitions from acute care to collaborative practice, and hospital to community practice Nursing therapeutics models of transition, including role supplementation models and debriefing models
