Book The Association Between Perceived Parenting Styles and Adolescent Substance Use

Download or read book The Association Between Perceived Parenting Styles and Adolescent Substance Use written by Roxanne Henry and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the literature on Baumrind̕s theory of Parenting Styles and how perceptions of these are associated to adolescent at-risk behaviour, this study set out to examine whether any parenting style increased or decreased adolescent substance use. The central aim of this study was to examine the association between perceived parenting styles and adolescent substance use. To further this, 239 grade 10 and 11 adolescent participants were drawn from 3 schools in Mitchell̕s Plain, a suburb in the Western Cape (with permission granted from the Education Department). This particular suburb was chosen due to the high rates of substance use and substance related crime within the area. A quantitative research design was implemented within this study. The participants were required to complete the Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT), a questionnaire aimed at measuring drug use, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), aimed at measuring perceived parenting styles and a Biographical Questionnaire to provide additional information. Informed consent was obtained and the confidentiality of the schools and participants were protected. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, a data analysis programme available at the University of the Western Cape. Results show that substance use reduction was significantly related to a perceived authoritative parenting style. However, no significant relationships could be found between perceived permissive and authoritarian parenting style. Significant difference was found in the results obtained for male and female adolescents, with males generally appearing to use more substances. It can be concluded that perceived authoritative parenting styles have an important role to play in the prevention of adolescent substance abuse

It consisted of a 5- point Likert type scale with 17 items. Seven items were positively coded, i.e. 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 14 16 & 17 and 10 were negatively coded. (ii) Index Of Peer Relation (IPR). It comprised of a 5 point Likert scale with 13 items. Eleven were positively coded and 2 items (4 &5) were negative. For the statistical analysis Mean, Stander Deviation and t-value was calculated that t-test were used to analyze the relationship of high and low income group of addicts with their peers and with their family. The correlation between family influence and friends influenced on the addicts was checked. The results indicated that lower income groups of adolescent drug addicts have poor relationships with their family and strong relationship with their peers. Low income group of addicts have more intrafamilial problem then the high income group of addicts. The alpha reliability of both scales was also calculated. The reliability of IFR is .95 and reliability of IPR is .7

Book The Family Context of Adolescent Drug Use

Download or read book The Family Context of Adolescent Drug Use written by Robert H Coombs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an essential volume for educators, social workers, health care professionals, and parents who are frustrated by the consuming power of drugs over the lives of young people and looking for answers to this enormous problem. In this unique and highly practical volume, experts concentrate on the family--the foundation of mental health and social control--as the most positive force in the prevention of adolescent drug use. Despite the “war on drugs,” young people in large numbers continue to use substances. This instructive guide focuses on educating and strengthening families--which makes stronger children who are less likely to use drugs--instead of the traditional efforts based on rehabilitation instead of prevention. It offers instructive background information about societal forces that affect families and make it difficult to raise drug-free youngsters. Family differences are discussed, such as family structure, parenting styles, ethnic and cultural characteristics. Contributors thoroughly examine practical, effective interventions--at home, at school, and with peers--that are positive rather than negative, instructional rather than punitive, and preventive instead of remedial.

Book Protective and Risk Models of Adolescent Initiation of Substance Use During the Transition from Middle School to High School

Download or read book Protective and Risk Models of Adolescent Initiation of Substance Use During the Transition from Middle School to High School written by Samantha D. Eskridge and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six models were tested examining the risk and protective factors of substance use during the transition from middle to high school. The study sample included 321 families (an adult and an 8th grader) in order to assess the concurrent and prospective relationships between parenting (effective and ineffective), peer association (prosocial and deviant), and adolescent drug use and attitudes about drug use. Non-mediated as well as peer mediated non-gender specific and gender-specific structural equation models were tested for both risk and protective models. The risk models indicated consistent and developmentally persistent concurrent, prospective, and reciprocal associations among ineffective parenting, deviant peer associations, and adolescent drug use and attitudes. Specifically, ineffective parenting has direct and mediated effects on adolescent drug use during that transition from middle to high school in the non-gender specific models. Deviant peer association had a prospective relationship with ineffective parenting during this developmental transition. The mediated gender-specific risk model showed relatively minor gender differences. In the non-gender specific protective models, effective parenting had largely concurrent relationships between prosocial peer association and adolescent drug use and attitudes. There are more prominent gender differences in the protective model, as for females there are consistent and resilient concurrent and reciprocal prospective relationships between effective parenting, prosocial peer association, and adolescent drug use and attitudes. Overall, the results suggest that the transition from middle school to high school is a critical juncture for risk factors for adolescent drug use and attitudes. Additionally, the protective models suggested that effective parenting strategies may have more effects earlier in development.

Download or read book Adolescent Drug Use written by Candace Sheree Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examined. Data on the adolescents' perceptions of their parents' drug attitudes and drug use and their perceptions of their peers' drug attitudes and drug use were collected during the sixth grade. Data on their own drug use and drug attitudes were collected at both the sixth and seventh grade. The results revealed that in the sixth and seventh grades, both the parental drug factor and peer drug factor have a direct affect on adolescent drug behavior. However, in the sixth grade, the parental drug factor had a stronger relationship with the adolescent drug factor than the peer drug factor. By seventh grade, the peer drug factor had a stronger relationship with the adolescent drug factor than the parent drug factor. When considering the impact of family characteristics in the seventh grade, this study found that increased familial caring and trust appears to protect adolescents from peer drug attitudes that may support cigarette use. Control and supervision, another aspect of family bonding, was also found to protect adolescents from peer drug attitudes that may support alcohol use.
