Book Krishna Kumari The Tragedy of India

Download or read book Krishna Kumari The Tragedy of India written by English Subba Rao and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krishna Kumari: The Tragedy of India introduces readers to the first English language play in modern India. Written in 1826 by English Subba Rao, one of the first Indians to be schooled in English, Krishna Kumari depicts the true story of a princess of Udaipur who is forced to commit suicide in order to end a war started by her suitors, the rulers of the neighboring kingdoms of Jaipur and Jodhpur. Tragically, her death proves to be in vain because the mercenaries recruited by the contending rulers nevertheless proceed to plunder the region. All three kingdoms are then compelled to seek the protection of the East India Company, bringing their independence to an end. Sharp and witty, Krishna Kumari was intended to warn Indian principalities against the follies that led to the downfall of the Rajputs. Unfortunately, the play scarcely saw the light of day. Angered by Subba Rao's opposition to their power, the British forced him to withdraw from public life. This is why audiences have never heard of Krishna Kumari-until now. Building on extensive archival research, this volume brings Subba Rao's pioneering drama back to life. The introductory essay by Rahul Sagar, a leading scholar of nineteenth century India, familiarizes readers with the remarkable characters in the play and the violent era in which they lived. By shedding light on Subba Rao's extraordinary life and career, it also reveals how important principalities like Tanjore and Travancore were in battling colonialism and shaping modern India.

Book The Emergence of Jaipur State

Download or read book The Emergence of Jaipur State written by Doris Marion Kling and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various pre-modern successor states and other polities arose during the period of Mughal decline after 1707. Jaipur was a prime example of a polity which developed from a patriarchal, clan-dominated entity into a more consolidated, centralized domain during the period of its subservience to Mughal rule. Its internal administration was shaped according to the Mughal model; but elements of informal, patriarchal relationships, although eroded, remained. Further centralization and territorial expansion occurred after 1707 when its talented ruler, Raja Savai Jai Singh, reshaped the boundaries of the polity. He utilized his influence at Delhi as well as his appointments to the governorships of Malwa and Agra to gain long-term assignments and leases. He also meddled in regional politics to gain control over other Rajput polities and branches of his own clan. However, his adherence to traditional Rajput marital alliances was deleterious to Jaipur's future stability and maturation as a state. While Awadh and Hyderabad enjoyed several generations of innovation and consolidation, Jaipur "state," beset by debilitating civil war and decades of Maratha raids after the Raja's death, remained inchoate.

Book excerpt: First published in 1978, Rural, Protest, Identity consists of eleven essays on modern South Asia. Its concern is with the diversity of the region, to suggest how its study may be enriched by the juxtaposition of various disciplines, and in particular through the examination of familiar subjects from less familiar points of view. Four papers deal with the ruling of modern India. One examines the relationship between the British government and an Indian state, one the legal implications of the emergency under Mrs. Gandhi, and two the role of civil servants in the formation of Indian government policy. Four more papers deal with aspects of protest movements: one with British Ceylon, one with a follower of Gandhi, and two with Gandhi himself. Three final papers treat questions of identity from literary or linguistic standpoints. Two discuss ideas or stereotypes as expressed in famous books, and the third considers a linguistic movement in Pakistan. This book will be of interest to student of South Asian studies, history, economics, literature and political science.

Book excerpt: Jaipur, the glorious Pink City of India, sets many a hearts aflutter with visions of grandeur, valour, romance and beauty. This heritage city’s inherent historic charm has always been a major source of attraction. Travellers, poets and philosophers have lavished praise on it, and perhaps no other place is imbued with the richness of ritual and ceremony across the country, as Jaipur is. Among its numerous architectural wonders, the city’s Jantar Mantar (observatory) and Amber Fort have been included in United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s list of world heritage sites. The book elaborates on the lesser known aspects that have contributed to its coveted status of a heritage city. It also offers a glimpse into the lives of people, who have made a difference to this city through their contributions and have aided in making this wonderful city what it is today. The city is an integral element on the itinerary of any global traveller and a worthy venue for a ‘destination wedding’ in one of its numerous forts or palaces. Also in focus is Jaipur’s everevolving image as a new economic hub and a well-equipped modern metropolis. In this well-researched and meticulously documented book, the author presents a comprehensive picture of the city, bringing to light many hitherto unexplored facts that will interest those with a penchant for urban histories, their origin and their evolution. The book has been abundantly illustrated with more than 500 rare, coloured photographs and paintings, and 154 unseen black and white photographs and illustrations, to capture the imagination of a discerning reader.
