Book excerpt: This study examined the prospective effects of multiple risks on the internalizing and externalizing problems of 258 1st and 2nd generation Chinese American school-aged children, as well as the mediating and moderating roles of parenting styles. When examining the relations between risk domains and children's behavioral adjustment, children's low self-regulation and negative emotionality, single-parent family structure, and gaps in parent-child cultural orientations were found to be unique predictors of adjustment outcomes two years later. The multiple risk index, which represented the joint effects of uniquely predictive risk variables, was related to higher levels of child-reported internalizing and externalizing problems. Similarly, the cumulative risk index, which represented the number of risk factor exposures, was also associated with increased internalizing and externalizing problems as reported by children. Though we did not find support for parenting styles as mediators, results did indicate that authoritarian parenting interacted with the multiple and cumulative risk indexes. High authoritarian parenting had a tendency to strengthen the relation between the multiple risk index and increased teacher-reported internalizing problems, while low authoritarian parenting had a tendency to attenuate the relation between cumulative risk and parent-reported internalizing problems.

The nature of the parent-child relationship begins with parenting—the practices and strategies that parents engage in as they raise their children. Parenting during childhood sets the stage for parent-adolescent relati- ships. These relationships make a critical difference during the teenage years: we know that when parent-adolescent relationships are healthy and strong, adolescents are more likely to have high aspirations and achievement, and to make healthier choices when it comes to risk-taking. Most of the research in this ?eld has been based in the United States and has been conducted through studies of European American families. Yet a growing body of research suggests important ethnic differences in styles of parenting and the qua- ties characterizing the parent-adolescent relationship. In this area of research, most existing studies have examined ethnic and cultural group differences using widely accepted measures and concepts of parenting. Comparative studies assume that dimensions of parenting such as parental warmth or control have the same meaning across cultures; however, given that conceptualizations of adolescent-parent re- tionships have been developed and tested on samples comprised largely of European Americans, we cannot rule out the possibility that the way we understand parenting has been shaped by the predominantly Western- and U. S. -focused research in this ?eld.

Book excerpt: This study examined the prospective associations between behavior problems and teacher-child relationship quality (TCRQ) in a socio-economically diverse sample of Chinese American first- and second-grade children in immigrant families (N = 258). Externalizing and internalizing problems were assessed using parents' and teachers' ratings. Teachers completed a questionnaire measuring TCRQ dimensions of Warmth and Conflict and children completed a questionnaire measuring Closeness. Path analyses were conducted to examine the bidirectional associations between behavior problems and TCRQ, controlling for baseline levels and demographic characteristics. Results indicated that teacher-rated externalizing problems negatively predicted child-rated Closeness, teacher-rated internalizing problems negatively predicted teacher-rated Conflict, and parent-rated internalizing problems negatively predicted teacher-rated Warmth. Although teacher-rated TCRQ did not significantly predict teacher-rated behavior problems, teacher-rated Conflict positively predicted parent-rated externalizing problems. Unexpectedly, child-rated Closeness also positively predicted parent-rated externalizing problems. These findings highlight the importance of assessing TCRQ and children's behavior problems using multiple reporters. The present study also provides support for the transactional relationship between children's behavior problems and TCRQ. Recommendations for school-based interventions with Chinese American children in immigrant families are discussed.

Indeed, such is the apparent efficacy of such interventions, that there are many policy-led initiatives to implement these at national and international scales. However, few scholars or practitioners have thought in any systematic and critical way about the importance of contextualizing these interventions, i.e., considering how the impact of such interventions may be affected and mediated by specific sociocultural factors (from gender, to ethnicity and socio-economics). The aim of the Research Topic “The Sociocultural Context of Psychosocial Interventions” was to address this lacuna. As such, we tried to help bringing a more ‘contextual’ mindset to the implementation of health and wellbeing interventions. This may help to shift the way such interventions are designed and implemented, both at a granular local level (i.e., influencing individual practitioners) and at a large-scale macro level (e.g., influencing policy makers). Themes within this Research Topic have concerned both macro-sociocultural as well as meso-and micro-layers, and the peculiarities of implementing real world research based on these levels. There has been room for physical and mental health, for family relationships, for educational contexts and even for the effects of crime. Some works have included interesting methodological discussions on the integration of different ecological layers or the modal distribution of our interests. For us it has been very important to work giving a greater diffusion to these issues since, considering psychosocial interventions in the context in which they occur, goes beyond an epistemological or methodological discussion. Rather, these considerations seriously affect the ability of practitioners to really reach the people who need their interventions, listening to their needs and respecting their preferences. For the editors of this book, then, the contextualization of interventions means considering the people who receive them as full citizens immersed in complex societies where factors such as social justice and health or well-being do not float apart in space but affect each other dialectically. We therefore think that the duty of both academics and practitioners is not to forget that it is as important to evaluate the direct effect of our interventions as the influence we have in the society as a whole when we carry them out. We hope you enjoy reading these works and that their dissemination stimulates new lines of research committed to both good practise and social transformation.
