Download or read book The Life and Riotous Times of H L Mencken written by William Manchester and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Written with verve, intellectual sophistication, and a prickly wit worthy of its eminent subject. . . . A first-class piece of literate entertainment” (The New Yorker). Before he went on to become a celebrated biographer and historian, renowned for such works as A World Lit Only by Fire, American Caesar, and The Last Lion, William Manchester worked as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun in the 1940s—and it was there that he met fellow journalist H. L. Mencken. This book tells the story of conservative, anarchist H. L. Mencken’s life in compelling, intimate detail—and offers a uniquely personal look at the influential cultural critic and satirist who cofounded the magazines the American Mercury and the Smart Set and became a legend for his sharp and highly quotable wit.

Download or read book H L Mencken written by Vincent Fitzpatrick and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a career that spanned half of a century, Henry Louis Mencken published more than 10 million words. More than a million were written about him, many of which, Mencken liked to remark, were highly condemnatory. He was called, with good reason, the most powerful private citizen in America during the 1920s.This lively introduction to Mencken's life and work begins with a concise biographical portrait before proceeding to a consideration of the five major periods of the renowned Baltimorean's career: his literary apprenticeship; the growth of his national reputation; his fame and unprecedented popularity during the 1920s (when college students would flash the Paris-green cover of the American Mercury as a badge of sophistication); the decline of his reputation during the Depression; and his renewed popularity during the 1940s, with the publication of his autobiographical trilogy, the Days books. In discussing this varied career, Vincent Fitzpatrick touches upon all the roles that Mencken played: journalist; editor; redoubtable critic of literature, culture, and politics; philologist; and autobiographer. Drawing upon Mencken's extensive correspondence of more than 100,000 letters, the book stresses his unflagging belief in the need for free speech (up to the limits of common decency). Indeed, in the end Mencken proved a significant American civil libertarian.Iconoclast, critic, satirist, "individualist," H. L. Mencken offered unique insights into American life. His lifelong celebration of the freedom to dissent marks his most enduring contribution to a nation that gave him such a wealth of material and so much delight.

Download or read book H L Mencken on Religion written by H. L. Mencken and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-08-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one ever argued more forcefully or with such acerbic wit against the foolish aspects of religion as H. L. Mencken (1880-1956). As a journalist, he gained national prominence through his newspaper columns describing the now-famous 1925 Scopes trial, which pitted Fundamentalists against a public school teacher who dared to teach evolution. But both before and after the Scopes trial, Mencken spent much of his career as a columnist and book reviewer lampooning the ignorant piety of gullible Americans.S. T. Joshi has brought together and organized many of Mencken''s writings on religion in this provocative and entertaining collection. The articles here presented demonstrate that Mencken canvassed the entire range of religious phenomena of his time, from evangelists Billy Sunday and Aime Semple McPherson, to Christian Scientists, and theosophists and spiritualists. On a more serious note are his discussions of the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and the scientific worldview as a rival to religious belief. Also included are poignant autobiographical accounts of Mencken''s own upbringing and his core beliefs on religion, ethics, and politics. If anything was sacred to Mencken, it was the right to speak one''s mind freely, and many of his attacks are directed against those true believers who he felt tried to foist their beliefs on others to stifle independent thinking. For everyone who values freethought and sharp intelligence, this collection of articles by America''s premier iconoclast is a must.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reincarnation Stories of Mercy & Resolution was formerly titled, 9 Cats 9 Lives. FDR, Al Capone, Henry Ford . . . What were they doing on Atlantis? And how did that set the stage for future lives? Elizabeth Clare Prophet penetrates the veils of akasha to reveal the past lives of individuals who helped shape the modern world. As she traces threads of karma, we see how their choices in many lives set their destiny and the karmic challenges they would face in the twentieth century. The stories are intriguing. More importantly, they show that while karma may determine the cards we are dealt in life, we each choose how we will play our hand. We can rise to our higher calling and balance our karma-or wrap ourselves more tightly in its bonds. The message is that we can transcend our past-and our past lives-and find a new freedom and joy in life each day. Formerly titled, 9 Cats 9 Lives

Download or read book The Irresistible Rise of Mediocre Man The War On Excellence written by Joe Dixon and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a world without quality. That world is coming. Quality is being assassinated by mediocrity. We are told that a rising tide lifts all boats. A rising tide of mediocrity makes everything mediocre and drowns everything of quality. You can't find any quality because it is surrounded by so much mediocrity. Nietzsche said, "The higher we soar the smaller we seem to those who cannot fly." Mediocre people cannot recognize quality. For them, it's tiny, very far away, and irrelevant to their lives. Vicki Corona wrote, "Remember that life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away!" In the land of mediocrity, life is measured more and more by the former and features none of the latter. We live in a muzak world, a world of sanitized, sterilized elevator music, designed to be as innocuous as possible, forming a uniform background, a background of absolute, mind-wiping mediocrity. The whole world is becoming like that. What will you do about it?
