Book excerpt: Cytokinins are hormones involved in all aspects of plant growth and development and are essential for in vitro manipulation of plant cells and tissues. Much information has been gathered regarding the chemistry and biology of cytokinins, while recent studies have focused on the genetics and cytokinin-related genes. However, other than proceedings of symposia, no single volume on cytokinins has been written. This book is the first of its kind, homing in on the key subject areas of cytokinin-chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, activity, function, genetics, and analyses. These areas are comprehensively reviewed in individual chapters by experts currently active in the field. In addition, a personal history on the discovery of cytokinin is presented by Professor Folke Skoog. This volume summarizes previous findings and identifies future research directions.

Book Thioredoxin and Glutaredoxin Systems

Download or read book Thioredoxin and Glutaredoxin Systems written by Jean-Pierre Jacquot and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue features recent data concerning thioredoxins and glutaredoxins from various biological systems, including bacteria, mammals, and plants. Four of the sixteen articles are review papers that deal with the regulation of development of the effect of hydrogen peroxide and the interactions between oxidants and reductants, the description of methionine sulfoxide reductases, detoxification enzymes that require thioredoxin or glutaredoxin, and the response of plants to cold stress, respectively. This is followed by eleven research articles that focus on a reductant of thioredoxin in bacteria, a thioredoxin reductase, and a variety of plant and bacterial thioredoxins, including the m, f, o, and h isoforms and their targets. Various parameters are studied, including genetic, structural, and physiological properties of these systems. The redox regulation of monodehydroascorbate reductase, aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, and cytosolic isocitrate dehydrogenase could have very important consequences in plant metabolism. Also, the properties of the mitochondrial o-type thioredoxins and their unexpected capacity to bind iron–sulfur center (ISC) structures open new developments concerning the redox mitochondrial function and possibly ISC assembly in mitochondria. The final paper discusses interesting biotechnological applications of thioredoxin for breadmaking.

  • ISBN : 3540686967
  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book The Chloroplast written by Anna Stina Sandelius and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chloroplasts are vital for life as we know it. At the leaf cell level, it is common knowledge that a chloroplast interacts with its surroundings – but this knowledge is often limited to the benefits of oxygenic photosynthesis and that chloroplasts provide reduced carbon, nitrogen and sulphur. This book presents the intricate interplay between chloroplasts and their immediate and more distant environments. The topic is explored in chapters covering aspects of evolution, the chloroplast/cytoplasm barrier, transport, division, motility and bidirectional signalling. Taken together, the contributed chapters provide an exciting insight into the complexity of how chloroplast functions are related to cellular and plant-level functions. The recent rapid advances in the presented research areas, largely made possible by the development of molecular techniques and genetic screens of an increasing number of plant model systems, make this interaction a topical issue.

Book Chloroplast Biogenesis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Udaya C. Biswal
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-04-17
  • ISBN : 9401702470
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book Chloroplast Biogenesis written by Udaya C. Biswal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chloroplast is the organelle where the life-giving process photosynthesis takes place; it is the site where plants and algae produce food and oxygen that sustain our life. The story of how it originates from proplastids, and how it ultimately dies is beautifully portrayed by three authorities in the field: Basanti Biswal, Udaya Biswal and M. K. Raval. I consider it a great privilege and honor to have been asked to write this foreword. The book ' Chloroplast biogenesis: from proplastid to gerontoplast' goes much beyond photosynthesis. The character of the book is different from that of many currently available books because it provides an integrated approach to cover the entire life span of the organelle including its senescence and death. The books available are mostly confined to the topics relating to the 'build up' or development of chloroplast during greening. The story of organelle biogenesis without description of the events associated with its regulated dismantling during genetically programmed senescence is incomplete. A large volume of literature is available in this area of chloroplast senescence accumulated during the last 20 years. Although some of the findings in this field have been organized in the form of reviews, the data in the book are generalized and integrated with simple text and graphics. This book describes the structural features of prop las tid and its transformation to fully mature chloroplast, which is subsequently transformed into gerontoplast exhibiting senescence syndrome. The book consists of five major chapters.

  • Author : Martin Warren
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-12-21
  • ISBN : 0387785183
  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book Tetrapyrroles written by Martin Warren and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excluding the biological polymers proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, modified tetrapyrroles are the biological molecules that have had the greatest impact on the evolution of life over the past 4 billion years. They are involved in a wide variety of fundamental processes that underpin central primary metabolism in all kingdoms of life, from photosynthesis to methanogenesis. Moreover, they bring colour into the world and it is for this reason that these compounds have been appropriately dubbed the ‘pigments of life’. To understand how and why these molecules have been so universally integrated into the life processes one has to appreciate the chemical properties of the tetrapyrrole scaffold and, where appropriate, the chemical characteristics of the centrally chelated metal ion. This book addresses why these molecules are employed in Nature, how they are made and what happens to them after they have finished their usefulness.

Book Metabolism and Molecular Activities of Cytokinins

Download or read book Metabolism and Molecular Activities of Cytokinins written by J. Guern and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a number of recent biology meetings, plant growth factors have been a favorite topic. One may ask if a new colloquium devoted to the metab olism and the activities of cytokinins, considered at the molecular level, was really necessary and will add anything important to the previous contributions. As a matter of fact, the primary purpose of the organizers, of the French National Center of Scientific Research, and of the National In stitute of Agronomic Research which sponsored the colloquium was less the edition of a proceedings book than the desire to bring together a number of scientists who had made contributions towards solving prob· lems in cytokinin research and thereby to provide an opportunity for fruitful discussions without restrictions in the timetable. Indeed this primary target was attained. Moreover, important new fmdings and con clusions were presented by the participants that merited publication in the form ofthis book. It is beyond the scope of this foreword to adver tize or even to classify these new fmdings. We shall only mention a few of them. The reader will appreciate the contributions of those authors who worked hard to elucidate the biosynthetic pathways of natural cytokin ins.
