Book The Scottish Book Trade 1500 1720

Download or read book The Scottish Book Trade 1500 1720 written by Alastair J. Mann and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2000-12-12 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the Scottish book trade from c.1500 to c.1720, looking at booksellers, bookbinders, stationers and printers and their relationship to the forces of authority. The scale of the Scottish book trade in this period was surprisingly large, consisting of over 150 printers and over 400 booksellers, but its rate of growth was not constant as it was buffeted by the winds of economic and political circumstances. It is the public, not private world of book dissemination that is examined. Emphsis is placed more on supply than on demand. It is shown that the unique qualities of the printed book, with its blend of commerce and technology on the one hand, and intellect and ideology on the other, ensured that authority - burghs, church, governemt (crown and executive) and law courts - reacted with a complex response of liberty and prohibition. So it was for all nations experiencing the arrival of printing, but Scotland had its own particular range of dynamics, a distinct Scottish tradition.

Download or read book English Bibles on Trial written by Avner Shamir and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to explore antagonism towards, and acts of violence against, English Bibles in England and Scotland (and, to a lesser degree, Ireland) from the English Civil War to the end of the eighteenth century. In this period, English Bibles were burnt, torn apart, thrown away and desecrated in theatrical and highly offensive ways. Soldiers and rebels, clergymen and laymen, believers and doubters expressed their views and emotions regarding the English Bible (or a particular English Bible) through violent gestures. Often, Bibles of other people and other denominations were burnt and desecrated; sometimes people burnt and destroyed their own Bibles. By focusing on violent gestures which expressed resentment, rejection and hatred, this book furthers our understanding of what the Bible meant for early modern Christians. More specifically, it suggests that religious identities in this period were not formed simply by the pious reading, study and contemplation of Scripture, but also through antagonistic encounters with both Scripture itself and the Bible as a material object.

Book Scottish Emigration to Colonial America 1607 1785

Download or read book Scottish Emigration to Colonial America 1607 1785 written by David Dobson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1650, only a few hundred Scots had trickled into the American colonies, but by the early 1770s the number had risen to 10,000 per year. A conservative estimate of the total number of Scots who settled in North America prior to 1785 is around 150,000. Who were these Scots? What did they do? Where did they settle? What factors motivated their emigration? Dobson's work, based on original research on both sides of the Atlantic, comprehensively identifies the Scottish contribution to the settlement of North America prior to 1785, with particular emphasis on the seventeenth century.

Book Religion and Women in Britain c 1660 1760

Download or read book Religion and Women in Britain c 1660 1760 written by Sarah Apetrei and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays contained in this volume examine the particular religious experiences of women within a remarkably vibrant and formative era in British religious history. Scholars from the disciplines of history, literary studies and theology assess women's contributions to renewal, change and reform; and consider the ways in which women negotiated institutional and intellectual boundaries. The focus on women's various religious roles and responses helps us to understand better a world of religious commitment which was not separate from, but also not exclusively shaped by, the political, intellectual and ecclesiastical disputes of a clerical elite. As well as deepening our understanding of both popular and elite religious cultures in this period, and the links between them, the volume re-focuses scholarly approaches to the history of gender and especially the history of feminism by setting the British writers often characterised as 'early feminists' firmly in their theological and spiritual traditions.

Book The Grahams of Pennsylvania and Virginia

Download or read book The Grahams of Pennsylvania and Virginia written by Alicia M. G. Graham and published by Alicia M. G. Graham. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book both for the reader with a casual interest in ancestry, and the serious researcher of Scottish genealogies. It starts by tracing the ancestry of the Grahams of Grayville, Illinois, to Pennsylvania and Virginia. In the course of following their trails to Ireland and Scotland, the author amasses a library of church history, geography, archaeological data, land records, DNA, military and other historical records that stretches as far back as the first recorded Graham in Scotland, William de Graham. This collection of reference data is preserved in the appendices to assist researchers of Scots-Irish ancestry, not just Grahams. Our Grahams of Pennsylvania and Virginia also includes information on related clans such as the Kirkpatricks, Corries, Murrays, and Armstrongs and provides a new perspective on Scottish history and the origin of the Scottish people using the latest Y-DNA and archaeological data available. It breaks new ground and punctures some long-held misconceptions of family genealogies. It also postulates theories that would explain the facts and circumstances behind several major events, as well as family connections, and legends of Scottish history. Additional DNA testing may eventually prove which theories are correct. Our Grahams of Pennsylvania and Virginia contains a treasure of reference material that can be used by researchers of all levels. It is meticulously researched, fully sourced, and provides access information for almost all source material.
