D. 1627-1628 Not the least difficulty of the authorities was to keep hold Of their conscripts when they had got them. Before they were shipped abroad they were made secure in such places as the Tolbooth of Edinburgh, but when in active service on foreign soil they could not be so effectually looked after, and, as the Register testifies, they deserted in hundreds.
