Download or read book Modern Revolutions written by John Dunn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-06-22 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many political regimes today draw such legitimacy as they have from a revolution: the destruction of an existing political elite and its replacement by a different group or groups drawn from inside the same society. A large part of the ideological dispute in world politics has come in consequence to turn on an interpretation of the character of revolutions as political and social events. It is extremely difficult to separate ideological assessments of the desirability or otherwise of what has occured in revolutions from causal explanations of why these revolutions occurred, and both major traditions in the analysis of revolutionary phenomena have been damaged by their failure to distinguish clearly between explanation and assessment. In examining eight major revolutions of the twentieth century, John Dunn helps readers to remedy this state of affairs by thinking for themselves.

Book Economic Reforms in the Socialist World

Download or read book Economic Reforms in the Socialist World written by Stanislaw, etc, Gomulka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1990. Socialist countries now account for about a quarter of the world economy, about a third of the world population and about half the world military power. What happens in those countries is therefore par excellence of importance to all of us. This book is an outcome of a Conference on Economic Systems and Reforms in a Changing World, held in Seoul in September 1987. The Conference was significant in several respects. Foremost was the fact that this was probably the first such meeting of scholars from both socialist and non-socialist countries held to discuss socialist economic reforms worldwide.

Book International Change and the Stability of Multiethnic States

Download or read book International Change and the Stability of Multiethnic States written by Badredine Arfi and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-23 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[A]n important contribution to scholarship.... rigorous and intelligible." -- Patrick James, University of Missouri International Change and the Stability of Multiethnic States contributes to the debate over ethnic conflict and cooperation in multiethnic states destabilized by the changing environment of the post--Cold War era, proposing a new way of viewing and dealing with these problems. Through an analysis of important moments in the history of two prominent multiethnic societies -- the former Yugoslavia and Lebanon -- in which nonstate actors such as communal groups played important roles in events that determined the fates of both states, Badredine Arfi builds a general theory of how the governance of multiethnic societies is transformed under changing international conditions. His work provides new insights on how policymaking can be improved to respond to the challenges posed by the creation, maintenance, transformation, and, when it occurs, collapse of state governance in multiethnic societies. This timely work will interest scholars of international relations and comparative politics, regional specialists, policymakers, and activists.
