Book Non Sunni Muslims in the Late Ottoman Empire

Download or read book Non Sunni Muslims in the Late Ottoman Empire written by Necati Alkan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alawis or Alawites are a minority Muslim sect, predominantly based in Syria, Turkey and Lebanon. Over the course of the 19th century, they came increasingly under the attention of the ruling Ottoman authorities in their attempts to modernize the Empire, as well as Western Protestant missionaries. Using Ottoman state archives and contemporary chronicles, this book explores the Ottoman government's attitudes and policies towards the Alawis, revealing how successive regimes sought to bring them into the Sunni mainstream fold for a combination of political, imperial and religious reasons. In the context of increasing Western interference in the empire's domains, Alkan reveals the origins of Ottoman attempts to 'civilize' the Alawis, from the Tanzimat period to the Young Turk Revolution. He compares Ottoman attitudes to Alawis against its treatment of other minorities, including Bektashis, Alevis, Yezidis and Iraqi Shi'a. An important new contribution to the literature on the history of the Alawis and Ottoman policy towards minorities, this book will be essential reading for scholars of the late Ottoman Empire and minorities of the Middle East.

Book excerpt: One does not have to read too far into the Bible to find that it says the following about Him: God hardened people’s hearts. God put lying spirits in the mouth of false prophets. God personally deceived prophets. God Blinded people to the truth. God inflicted sickness. God sent natural disasters. God moved people to sin. God tempted men. God intentionally gave men unrighteous laws. God created evil. And even more…. Such statements have presented insurmountable difficulties to Bible readers. Failure to understand them properly have led to doctrines that paint God in less than a favorable light. However, when we understand the permissive sense, most difficulties with such verses will disappear. This book will help you understand this important principle and will remove all doubt about God’s love, goodness, and holiness.

Book The Covenant Motif in Jeremiah s Book of Comfort

Download or read book The Covenant Motif in Jeremiah s Book of Comfort written by Tiberius Rata and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covenant Motif in Jeremiah's Book of Comfort: Textual and Intertextual Studies of Jeremiah 30-33 examines Jeremiah's promise of a new covenant that God will interiorize his law into people's hearts. This in-depth syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic study of selected texts in Jeremiah 30-33 comprises the foundation for a superb biblical theology of the new covenant. God's pledge that this covenant is «not like the one I made with your fathers» is explored in relation to the Abrahamic, Mosaic, and Davidic covenants. Tiberius Rata makes a theologically and hermeneutically balanced incursion into Old Testament texts used in the New Testament and provides a springboard for further discussion on difficult yet important issues such as the Lord's Supper and the future of Israel.
