Download or read book The History of the Church of Scotland Vol 1 written by Thomas Stephen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 1: From the Reformation to the Present Time The conduct of the most conspicuous of the ministers who had been bred at the feet of these men, or had adopted their views, will admit of little palliation; for the passions of hatred, variance, emulation, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envy ings, by which they were actuated, were works of the flesh which inferred the pains of disinheritance from the kingdom of heaven, but which were then extremely common. Their vio lence is admitted by Dr. Robertson, himself a presbyterian minister, who says, the pulpit was disgraced by being used as a vehicle to recite the sovereign, and to stir up contention among the people. The circumstance which will make the following history more interesting to i English readers is, that the destruction of the church of England, and the per scontion of her clergy in the seventeenth century, were the effects of the Scottish Solemn League and Covenant. The same agency was at work, and the same objects contemplated, by the jesuits, when they instigated the covenanters to ex tirpate the reformed Catholic church in all the three kingdoms, and their maxim that the end justifies the means was then fully verified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Reformation to the Revolution Settlement It has often been the subject of regret to others, as it was to himself, that the pressure of engrossing public duties prevented the Author from accomplishing a pur pose for which, by the concurrent testimony of those of his contemporaries who were best entitled to give an opinion, he was so eminently qualified and it is due to his memory to say, that the present work, however valuable, and although presented in a form perhaps more adapted for the general reader, in many respects differs in its character from such a contribution to the history of ecclesiastical affairs in this country as he him self desired to give to the world.
