Book In All My Ways

Download or read book In All My Ways written by Amy Mahan Robbins and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “God is not so very much interested in whether we reach our destination as in how we get there. To us arrival is every-thing, but to God the journey is the most important. For it is in the journey that we are perfected; and it is in the hard-ships that He is glorified as we trust Him.” As she read the words on the faded clipping scotch-taped to the back pages of her mother’s Bible, author Amy Robbins knew them to be true. We all have a way of trying to make difficult experiences hurry along. In truth, we may want to escape or ignore the very events in our lives that God would use to make a framework to shape us, and transform us. Or--perhaps we may not quite trust that God really is present in our every day life, and is actively involved in all our ways. Regardless of your struggles, what is always needful in life in an encounter with the living God.

  • Author : Celia Townsend Wells

  • Pages : 147 pages

Download or read book Brood Bitch written by Celia Townsend Wells and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brood Bitch is a mother's reflection inspired by her hand-raising a litter of Pembroke Welsh corgis whose own mother died after a Caesarian delivery. Devastated by the loss of her only companion and awed by the task of saving the puppies, the narrator was surprised to discover she enjoyed this exclusive commitment. Her education, career, marriage, and mothering were all behind her: she was retired, her ex-husband was dead, and her daughter was independent. She brooded on these past commitments--usually conflicted--in light of her success doing the job of a canine mother. Parallels between the birth and care of the puppies and her daughter kept coming to her consciousness, helping her understand her sense of failure as a human mother. This was not what she expected when she began showing and breeding corgis. It was a hobby cultivated in middle age when she was well established in her job but uncertain as a single mother, one that incorporated her love of dogs, her need of an interest outside her profession, and her desire to give up the dating game. Most of all she wanted breeding corgis to provide a bonding experience with her daughter which, unfortunately it did not, at least not at the time. Instead, her bond with corgis comes to supersede all others--ironically through the death of her brood bitch--when she was bound exclusively to the puppies. Nurturing them lead to profound introspection, which eventually healed the pain of her insecure mothering. Beyond that, it enabled her to appreciate the vast scope of motherhood in both corgis and women--its variations, illusions, ideals, realities, frustrations, rewards. The narrator realized that she is a mother for life, even her bitch was for two hours, during which time she never saw her babies. The narrator having mothered them so happily herself and bonded so closely with the one she kept, was able to forge a bond with her daughter through links from their past that extended into the present. This was a slow process that may take most of a life re-lived, but rearing the puppies made it possible for her. Her final recompense was a guarded hope that the lovely young bitch who never knew her natural mother will succeed in the role and provide them both with a corgi companion for the rest of their lives.

Book Eleven Letters to You

Download or read book Eleven Letters to You written by Helen Elliott and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen Elliott’s Eleven Letters to You is a profoundly original memoir, an intimate account of growing up in the suburbs of Melbourne in the fifties and sixties, before feminism. This sparkling, wonderfully absorbing book is written in the form of eleven letters to those neighbours, relatives, friends, teachers and mentors who shaped the young Helen. (It begins in 1950 when she is three and finishes in 1969 when she is twenty-two.) Each of the letters is a homage to the power of memory to recreate life in all its sensuous and indelible detail. And each is a love letter that brings Elliott’s marvellous characters—the Misses Stapley, Lois, Mr Cohen and so on—back to life, along with the lost worlds they inhabit. Helen Elliott sets out to look for answers to one primary question: how did she become whoever she thought she was. She conducts her search through the lives of others. ‘I am not the centre of this book,’ she says, ‘but the hinge holding it together.’ Her search will mesmerise her readers, because of the power and fluency of her voice, and because the vanished kitchens and gardens and fields and streets she conjures up are so unforgettably drawn. Eleven Letters for You offers us an immersive and deeply moving reading experience. It will appeal equally to fans of Elena Ferrante and Helen Garner. Helen Elliott is a prominent literary critic and journalist and the editor of Grandmothers. Her writing has appeared in the Monthly, the Australian, the Age, Griffith Review, Best Australian Essays, Vogue and numerous other publications. She was the literary editor of the Herald Sun and has two children, four granddaughters and an acre of garden. ‘A quietly ecstatic work of memory—intense, witty and beautiful.’ Helen Garner

Over 84 million Americans—almost 3/4 of the US population—own a pet, and our society is still learning how to recognize and dignify that relationship with proper mourning rituals. We have only recently allowed the conversation of how to grieve for our non-human family members to come front and center. Lost Companions fills a specific, important demand, a massive need in the market for an accessible, meaningful book on pet loss. Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson takes a very personal, heartfelt approach to this difficult subject, allowing readers to explore their own responses and reactions, suggesting ways through and out of grief, as well as meaningful ways to memorialize our best friends. Book More Conversations with Walker Percy

Download or read book More Conversations with Walker Percy written by Walker Percy and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 1993 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of interviews supplements Conversations with Walker Percy and occasions an additional two dozen pleasurable encounters with Percy. Primarily from the last ten years of Percy's life, they show how his presence was stimulating thought in much of humanistic America, in literature, linguistics, psychology, and philosophy, and in cultural life in general. Although this acclaimed author of The Moviegoer, Lancelot, and Love in the Ruins never overcame his shyness with interviewers, he continued to grant interviews as long as his health permitted. This act of openness illustrates his humility before his ideas and his desire to help others understand them. Although the questions he was asked almost invariably became predictable, he always managed to add an anecdote, an illustration, a topical reference, that would breathe new life into the responses he was making. The interviews in this collection show him at the height when he knew that his illness would not allow him to write any more books, and that the only way to restate his ideas and offer a valediction to the large audience to whom he had always been kind, patient, and appreciative was to speak out. Percy despised the posture of many modern self-proclaimed intellectuals who delight in cloaking ideas in jargon and abstraction. He always tried to express himself clearly and as free of reservations as possible. These interviews reflect that clarity. With this book readers will welcome yet more close encounters with him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.
