Book The Red and the Black Annotated

Book excerpt: If there's one thing that powerful people don't like, it's being told that they're hypocrites.Maybe that's why there was such a backlash against Stendhal's The Red and the Black when it was first published in France in 1830. Since the French Revolution in 1789, it hadn't always been clear who was in charge of the country, and this made any criticism extra uncomfortable. This book's critique of the hollowness and cynicism of the upper classes was so sharp that copies of The Red and the Black were still getting burned 130 years later in Brazil. Now that's staying power.Stendhal's book follows the adventures of Julien Sorel, a young French peasant who dreams of becoming a Great-with-a-capital-G man. Had he been born only a few decades earlier, there would have been many chances for him to rise in the world by enlisting in the army of Napoleon Bonaparte. But those days have ended in France, and now people are pretty much born into whatever social status they'll have for the rest of their lives. Being a good protagonist, Julien doesn't accept this reality and does everything he can to make his fame. While he's busy pursuing his fortune, Julien has a couple of high-profile sexy times relationships with upper-class women. Both relationships are totally scandalous. They eventually land Julien on death row after he tries to murder his first lover for interfering with his second lover. Once he gets center stage in the courtroom, he seizes the opportunity to tell all the upper class people of France exactly what he thinks of them. Spoiler alert: not much.

Book excerpt: The Red and the Black Stendhal - First published in 1830, The Red and the Black, is widely considered the masterpiece of 19th century French author Marie-Henri Beyle, known more commonly by his pen name, Stendahl. It follows the ambitions of Julien Sorel, a young man raised in the French countryside who wishes to rise above his provincial station by climbing the social ranks of Parisian society. Through a series of events, Juliens talent and hard work give way to deception and hypocrisy when he realizes the limitations for advancement of a sincere and honest man of humble origins. Although Julien achieves much which he aspires to, ultimately his pride gets the better of him when he commits a violent crime of passion, leading to his tragic downfall. Through the deep psychological introspection of Julien we see Stendhals unique literary genius, the remarkable way in which he allows readers to live in the minds of his characters. Set against the backdrop of the July Revolution of 1830, The Red and the Black is a narrative which embodies the rich social conflict of that time. This edition is translated with an introduction by Horace B. Samuel.

Book excerpt: Le Rouge et le Noir (French for The Red and the Black) is a historical psychological novel in two volumes by Stendhal, published in 1830. It chronicles the attempts of a provincial young man to rise socially beyond his modest upbringing through a combination of talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy. He ultimately allows his passions to betray him.The novel's full title, Le Rouge et le Noir: Chronique du XIXe sicle (The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of the 19th Century), indicates its two-fold literary purpose as both a psychological portrait of the romantic protagonist, Julien Sorel, and an analytic, sociological satire of the French social order under the Bourbon Restoration (1814-30). In English, Le Rouge et le Noir is variously translated as Red and Black, Scarlet and Black, and The Red and the Black, without the sub-title.The title refers to the tension between the clerical (black) and secular (red) interests of the protagonist, which is a matter of some debate.
