Book The Reconstruction of the Church

Download or read book The Reconstruction of the Church written by and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most pastors serving congregations today cannot remember a time before the realities of denominational decline. For several decades now in the mainline church, little has changed, and emptying sanctuaries, shrinking budgets, and closing congregations are part of our daily experience. What does Jones bring to the conversation in this book that's different for those concerned for ecclesial vitality? The Reconstruction of the Church holds more than just another set of tactics, Jones sets out to pour a new foundation and take things in the church "down to the studs," in order to build something very old, but in this moment, very new. The Reconstruction of the Church is in a league of its own. It's like nothing you have read before! - Jeffrey Conklin-Miller, Th.D., Director of the Methodist House of Studies, Assistant Professor and Teaching Fellow, Duke University Divinity School, Durham, NCI might have wondered what E. Stanley Jones would think about our current struggles in The United Methodist Church, were he alive today. But I know because his chapter, "A Church That Holds Together Difference," contains insights which are fresh and clear and relevant. The Reconstruction of the Church is a book for those who care about the future of the church. Jones' charge to us is: In the church of the future the most important test of its power will be its capacity to win the two thirds of its membership who are caught in eddies of the inconsequential and the marginal, and are going round and round, getting nowhere and producing little or nothing - except motion. This group is the greatest mission field of the church. It must be changed from a field for evangelism into a force for evangelism. - Dr. David McAllister-Wilson, President, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington DCJones has a gift for taking complex theological issues and making them so simple in understanding and application. In The Reconstruction of the Church, he breaks down the practices of the Antioch church, and I found myself saying, "Yes! I want to be part of a church like that!" Jones actually believes that the church is big enough to have room for people of differing cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, with differing opinions, to work together in the cause of Christ. What a witness this would be in a divided world! - Dr. Clayton Oliphint, Lead Pastor, First United Methodist Church, Richardson, TX

Book The Purpose Pattern and Character of Worship

Download or read book The Purpose Pattern and Character of Worship written by L. Edward Phillips and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the broad range of Christianity we find diverse understandings of what makes for “good worship.” The Purpose, Pattern, and Character of Worship develops a typology of Christian worship to provide a method of assessing the decisions of congregations and leaders in forming and changing the orders of their worship. Among contemporary western Protestants, we identify at least six discrete characteristics of worship: -the Revival, -the Sunday School, -the Aesthetic Revival, -the Pentecostal/holiness movement, -the Prayer Meeting, -the twentieth-century Catholic Liturgical Renewal. These patterns define contemporary expression as: -Seeker Worship, -Creative Worship, -Traditional Worship, -Praise Worship, -House Church Worship, -Word and Table Worship. Absent an overall authority for the structure of worship (such as the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer), many Protestant congregations have developed a “conflation of patterns,” which often creates incoherent worship. This book helps leaders define the purpose, character, and pattern of their community’s worship.

In part one, Beckham explors the traditional church paradigm and the history that drives it compared to a cell-based model for church life. In part two, Beckham explains how the structure of a cell-based church reflects God's nature and embraces both Christ's transcendence and immanence. In the third part of the book, Jesus' revolutionary design for the church is explored. The Second Reformation: Reshaping the church for the 21st century is a thinking man's guide to the cell-based church.

Book Patterns of Peacemaking

Download or read book Patterns of Peacemaking written by A. Briggs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume XIII of eighteen in a series on Political Sociology. Originally published in 1945, this books makes a systematic survey and analysis, as objective as possible, of the tendencies most likely to govern peace-making. The authors intended to avoid making any specific recommendations of their own as to how the labours of peace-making should be undertaken, and to confine themselves to a study of how they were likely to be undertaken in the light of past experience, contemporary proposals, and the present alignment of political powers in the world. In the process of study, discussion and writing, all three authors arrived at certain more definite conclusions. At the same time, the course of events and the increasingly clear trend of official policies seemed to justify more positive assertions and more constructive suggestions than had at first been thought possible. The book, therefore, takes its present hybrid form: of systematic analysis carried forward to certain statements and even recommendations.

Book The Quest for Early Church Historiography

Download or read book The Quest for Early Church Historiography written by Jeremiah Mutie and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quest for Early Church Historiography explores how early church historiography underwent a significant shift beginning with the thought of Ferdinand Christian Baur (1792–1860), a shift that eventually culminated in the current extreme historiographies of such scholars as Bart D. Ehrman (1955–). Through the tracing of this historiographical trajectory, this work argues that, rather than seeing these current historiographies as having suddenly appeared in the scholarly scene, a better approach is to see them as the fruit of this long trajectory. Of course, as the work has sought to demonstrate, this trajectory is itself full of turns and twists. But the careful reader will, hopefully, be able to see the intrinsic connections that are demonstrably evident.

Download or read book A Listening Church written by Elochukwu Eugene Uzukwu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-12-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS. Famine. Ethnic strife. Refugees. Poverty. Debt. Environmental degradation. These form the wounded face of Africa today, the reality confronting the church of Africa. To heal Africa, Spiritan Father Elochukwu Uzukwu argues that the church in Africa must become a credible and effective agent of change by making full use of African resources--natural and sociohistorical--including traditional patterns of social organization. In order to renew itself, the church must remember that it does not exist for itself but for the people--to bear witness in Africa to the risen Lord. Focusing on the Catholic Church in Africa today, A Listening Church proposes a fresh approach to ecclesiology. Following closely on the African Synod of Bishops, Uzukwu proposes the initiation of serious theological discussion on the structure of the Church in Africa that came out of that historic occasion. Simply speaking, the African churches must listen to their people, and the Church in Rome must listen to the churches in Africa.
