Book excerpt: Excerpt from With a Policeman in South Africa, or Three Years in the Natal Mounted Police: A True Narrative Ah well! How grateful after all ought we young people to be for even the over anxiety of our dear old folk at home! Some such thoughts as these, coupled with my wondering as to when next I should see old England again, itted through my mind, as the vessel steamed slowly out of the East India docks bound for Afric's sunny fountains. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Irish Police Magistrate and Other Reminiscenses of the South of Ireland A'r a moment when the horrors of agrarian outrage, 'and those of base assassination, threaten again to fill the South of Ireland with just terror - when not only has it been found necessary to send down a special commission to inspire terror and promptly bring the bloodthirsty offenders to justice; but, above all, when more than one grand jury have recorded their doubts respecting the efficiency of the present police system, it certainly cannot be an ill chosen opportunity to place before the public some accounts of those mis deeds which at a former period disgraced and paralysed the greater part of the province of Munster, and-which were then put down by the effective and strong exertions of the local magistrates, many of whom still live, and still possess the powers of their youth, powers which they would doubtless display, if properly called on to exhibit them. The gentlemen who now honourably hold the commission of the peace in Limerick, Clare, and Tip petary, are men of undoubted courage, energy, and intelligence. An appeal to them would at once arouse them and though (perhaps from personal attachment) I believe I never saw so clever, so wonderful an officer. Book A Chronological History of the Boston Watch and Police From 1631 to 1865

This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chronological History of the Boston Watch and Police, From 1631 to 1865: Together With the Recollections of a Boston Police Officer, or Boston by Daylight and Gaslight, From the Diary of an Officer Fifteen Years in the Service The Author of this volume has been in the service of the Government of Boston as a Police Officer for the last fifteen years, and has many good reasons for feeling a deep interest in the history and welfare of his adopted city. Under this influence, and with opportunities offered through the courtesy of numerous friends, the writer has devoted much of his leisure time for some years past, in collecting material for a Chronological History of the Town and City of Boston; and although the collection is yet incomplete, it would now fill a large volume. From these records have been borrowed the materials that compose the "Chronological History of the Boston Watch and Police." The work has been prepared with no little labor and care, and it is hoped will prove of interest and value. The duties of the Police Officer afford peculiar opportunities for the study of human nature; and the views of city life, by him witnessed, present a wide field not only for the pen of the novelist or critic, but also for the hand of the philanthropist and Christian. The writer has not been an idle observer in his police life; and during his long term of service, no day has passed that he has not made a note of some passing event. Many of these notes are of no value except perhaps, now and then, as matters of reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Naval Officer, 1841-1865 During the war with Mexico, 1847-48, a friend of mine, J. Hogan Brown, was the sailing master of the United States steamship Mississippi. The Mississippi went from Vera Cruz in the squadron to attack Tampico, and had in tow the schooner Bonita - gunboat. During the night a "norther" sprang up, and the officer of the deck let the Bonita go, and did not think it necessary to report the fact to the commodore. In the morning the commodore, Matthew C. Perry, came on deck, and not seeing the Bonita, inquired where she was. The officer of the deck told him that in the night they had let her go in consequence of the weather. The commodore, who was not noted for his suaviter in modo, though strong in the fortiter in re, said: "Send the master to me." Upon his appearance he said, "Mr. Brown, where is that schooner?" Brown, who was never at a loss for an answer, instantly replied, "She is S. S. E., fifteen miles distant." "She is, eh?" said the commodore, and turning to the officer of the deck he said, "Steer S. S. E." The officers in the ward room, hearing of the occurrence, said, "Well! old Brown is caught at last." In about an hour the man at the mast-head called out: "Sail ho! "Where away?" said the officer of the deck. "Right ahead," was the reply; and in a few minutes: "Can you make her out?" Book Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer Classic Reprint written by Gilbert Moxley Sorrel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilbert Moxley Sorrel started as a young soldier in the American civil war, eventually rising to the rank of general. His Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer describes the campaigns in a candid and personal manner and is a great resource for anyone interested in this time period. Moxley Sorrel served most of his time under the talented James Longstreet. He does not attempt to provide an overview or objective account, but it is for precisely this reason that Recollections is so valuable. Many books have been written that objectively discuss the war but no other author could write this particular point of view.
