Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Lincoln The Genius of History will surely vindicate her right to truth, though a whole people conspire against her. So the man behind the mask, whether it be placed there by himself or others, must at length come forth in his own true character. We have seen, as has been well said, the Lincoln legend in actual process of evolution, and cannot again be surprised at the historical myths that have come down to us from more uncritical ages. But legend and myth must give way before conscientious investigation, an investigation which brings out suppressed facts and points an unerring finger at fallacies and fabrications. Book The Real Lincoln

Download or read book The Real Lincoln written by Jesse William Weik and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Lincoln: A Portrait Not long after the appearance of Herndon's Life of Lincoln, in the preparation of which I collaborated with the author, I was asked by the late Leonard Swett to visit him when I next came to Chicago. In due time I complied with the invitation. It was not long after I had called until our conversation turned on the Life of Lincoln which was then undergoing the test of popular approval. It was soon apparent that Mr. Swett greatly admired Herndon and he was generous and complimentary in his allusions to the book; but while he expressed the belief that Herndon, of all persons who had attempted to narrate the story of Lincolns life, was best qualified to tell all the truth and had religiously tried to do so, yet he felt that in some respects, due probably to his advanced age, he had fallen short of his full task. Mr. Swett intimated that he had talked to certain other friends, to whom he purposed sending me, who knew Lincoln personally, and they coincided with his view. He mentioned Joseph Medill, Horace White, Henry C.Whitney, Leonard W. Volk, the sculptor, and Alexander Hesler, the photographer, all of whom I interviewed. In addition he took me to see Lyman Trumbull, and I listened with deep interest to their recollections of Lincoln and Herndon. Regarding the need, in view of his unusual opportunities, of fuller revelations from Herndon, Swett and Trumbull agreed with each other, but in certain other respects, notably their estimate of Lincoln, they were not in complete accord. Just west of the Sangamon River is the hill on which the little town of New Salem was built. It is very steep and rugged until you reach the summit, where it is comparatively level. The view from this hill is one of the most beautiful in Illinois. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Life of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Isaac N. Arnold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln There is no doubt that for some time prior to the assassination of Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Arnold had contemplated writing his life. Previous to that event, and while yet a member of Congress, he had commenced to write the History of Abraham Lincoln and the Overthrow of Slavery, which he completed and published in 1867. He brought to the preparation of that work the qualities of an able and conscientious historian, who wrote very largely from personal knowledge and personal observation. It is a book of real interest and exceptional historic value. Important and valuable facts are to be obtained therein which are not to be found elsewhere. This work was never entirely satisfactory to Mr. Arnold, so far as it related to Mr. Lincoln, and hence some two years since he determined to write in a stricter sense the life of Mr. Lincoln, in the light of additional material he had gathered, and disconnected with the history of the overthrow of slavery, except in so far as the subject was connected generally with the administration of Mr. Lincoln. Book Legends That Libel Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book Legends That Libel Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Montgomery Smith Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends That Libel Lincoln It may be said that this book tells nothing that is really new, nothing that has not been known by Lincoln students for many years. I freely admit this to be true, for all the material used in this book has been gathered from sources that are available to anyone. Lincoln students are ac quainted with the information that is presented here, al though I hope they will find that it is presented and interpreted in a new manner. Unfortunately, however, many who speak or write about Lincoln do not appear to be acquainted with this information, nor does it seem to be generally known. Many writers and speakers of today still follow tradition, to a large extent, and thus help to give new life to Old legends and beliefs which persist today in spite of knowledge gathered by painstaking stu dents after years of research. As a result, we still have a picture of Abraham Lincoln that is inaccurate in several respects. We also have pictures of Lincoln's father and wife that are sadly distorted and most unjust to these two members of his family, each of whom made definite con tributions to the development of Abraham Lincoln. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herndon's Lincoln, Vol. 1: The True Story of a Great Life; The History and Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln Some persons will doubtless object to the narra tion of certain facts which appear here for the first time, and which they contend should have been consigned to the tomb. Their pretense is that no good can come from such ghastly exposures. To such over-sensitive souls, if any such exist, my answer is that these facts are indispensable to a full knowledge of Mr. Lincoln in all the walks of life. In order properly to comprehend him and the stir ring, bloody times in which he lived, and in which he played such an important part, we must have all the facts - we must be prepared to take him as he was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A True Life It must not be thought that when our nation began its life it was rich and great as it now is. It was small and weak. Its possessions did not reach from ocean to ocean, as they do now, but only from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River. There were but thirteen states, and they were thinly settled. Nearly all the people lived in that part of the country which is east of the Alleghany Mountains, and the different sections had but little to do with one another. The largest and richest of the states was Virginia, which claimed the land westward as far as to the Mississippi.
