Book Scottish Sporting Legends

Download or read book Scottish Sporting Legends written by Robert Philip and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland may not have won a World Cup (yet!), but many of the country’s sportsmen and women are revered as global legends, including Olympic and US Open champion Andy Murray and winner of six Olympic gold medals, Sir Chris Hoy. In football, the likes of Denis Law, ‘Slim’ Jim Baxter and Jimmy ‘Jinky’ Johnstone would not have looked out of place in the canary yellow of Brazil, while managers Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Jock Stein have become part of football folklore, as has Sir Alex Ferguson in more recent times. Amazingly, Scots have reached the top in just about every major sport: Jim Clark and Sir Jackie Stewart in Formula One; Andy Murray in tennis; Ken Buchanan and Benny Lynch in the boxing ring; Chris Hoy in cycling; sprinters Allan Wells and Eric Liddell on the Olympic track; and, as befits a nation renowned as ‘the home of golf’, Sandy Lyle was recognised as the greatest player on the planet upon winning the Masters in 1988. Scottish sport is the richest of tapestries and in Scottish Sporting Legends the cream of the crop are entertainingly profiled in a revealing collection of pen portraits of stars past and present.

Book Latino Baseball Legends

Download or read book Latino Baseball Legends written by Lew Freedman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told through profiles of the men who have made it a reality, this is the complex story of the triumphs achieved by—and challenges faced by—Latinos who have risen to the heights of Major League Baseball. Latino Baseball Legends: An Encyclopedia offers the most comprehensive, go-to source for everything relating to Latin American baseball stars, tracing the history of Latinos in baseball through the stories of those who have excelled at the game. Colorfully written 3,000-word entries explore the lives and careers of 25 dominant players, from legends such as Roberto Clemente to deserving, but comparatively unknown superstars such as Martin Dihigo. Shorter listings note another 75 Latinos who have figured prominently in the sport. The entries document the importance of baseball in Latin American culture and the way it has evolved in the players' home countries, but the encyclopedia does more than that. Its profiles also expose the difficulties faced by Latino players who are forced to overcome both a language barrier and the discrimination they face because of their skin color. And they demonstrate how proficiency with a bat and ball has become a great engine that can lift families out of poverty and provide hope for indigent youths.

Book Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies

Download or read book Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies written by Bob Gordon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newly reissued Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies, originally published in 2005, takes an in-depth look at the legends that have shaped the Phillies’ identity over the last seventy years. Each chapter profiles a different beloved Phillies personality that colored the latter half of the twentieth century. Most were cheered; some were booed. Philadelphia is a city that loves you back, just sometimes in strange ways. With quotes and interviews from former and current Phils, Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies profiles Mitch Williams, Darren Daulton, Dave Hollins, Jim Eisenreich, Pete Incaviglia, and Milt Thompson from 1993’s “Beards, Bellies, and Biceps” National League championship team, as well as Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, and Tug McGraw from the 1980 World Series championship team. Author Robert Gordon also includes their notable predecessors, from Hall of Famers Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn to former All-Stars like Johnny Callison and Del Ennis. No Phillies book would be complete without the off-the-field names who have defined the Phillies, such as team president Bill Giles, announcer Harry Kalas, and Dave Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic. Each of these legends played a unique role in shaping one of sports’ greatest franchises, and Legends of the Philadelphia Phillies brings them to life once again. Book JUSUP MAMAY MASTER PERFORMER OF THE KIRGHIZ MANAS EPIC

Download or read book JUSUP MAMAY MASTER PERFORMER OF THE KIRGHIZ MANAS EPIC written by Adil Jumaturdu and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zhenhui Liang, Weiguo Chen and Xu Zhang have done a great service to the study of oral epic poetry by translating Adil Jumaturdu’s and Tokon Isak’s detailed and comprehensive biography of Jusup Mamay (1918-2014), the great Kirghiz epic singer from Xinjiang. In this book, the reader learns how this “singer of tales” acquired his impressively large epic repertoire and becomes acquainted with the Kirghiz tradition of the Manas epic and epic cycle, in particular Jusup Mamay’s version, which comprises eight generations. The authors, native Kirghiz from Xinjiang, have had close contact with the singer over many years and offer unique insights into the mind and art of an exceptional epic singer-narrator. ---- Professor Karl Reichl (studying oral epic poetry at Bonn University) The Kirghiz heroic epic Manas boasts a history of around one thousand years. In the process of its development, generation after generation of singers have passed it down today by oral tradition. Jusup Mamay, one of the epic’s master singers, or manaschi, is renowned as the only performer in the world who was able to narrate eight generations of heroes from a single Kirghiz family, the epic’s namesake Manas chief among them. After years of surveys and interviews, the authors have assembled first-hand materials about Jusup Mamay to write a critical biography detailing the singer’s monumental talents and his great efforts in learning Manas. The biography elaborates on Jusup Mamay’s geographical and cultural environment, his apprenticeships under master manaschi, his passion for learning around 230,000-line epic by heart, his two marriages, his family, the features of his unique version of Manas, his many contributions to the inheritance of Kirghiz folk culture, and his influence both within his native China and across the globe. This book is a valuable contribution to the academic literature about the Manas epic and Kirghiz culture as well.
