Download or read book The Real Cuba Black and White Street Photography written by Sarah Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-first century Cuba is culturally rich, economically poor and yet has an energy that is infectiously uplifting. It was eighteen years ago when Sarah, a photographer, first travelled to Cuba, so she was pleasantly surprised to find that on her second visit in 2013, visibly, not a great deal had changed. There is no McDonalds or garish neon advertising, and the old Chevrolet cars are still everywhere in 2013 Cuba. Cuba is an alluring country trapped in a 1950’s time warp - well-suited to capturing in black and white photography.Discovering the real Cuba on foot is the only way to explore the ‘gritty reality’ of the place. In this photographic book, Sarah wanders the back streets of beautiful Havana, the classical french architectural city of Cienfuegos and the enchanting 19th century colonial town of Trinidad, capturing the daily lives on the street - the real essence of Cuba.

Book Cuba Black and White

Download or read book Cuba Black and White written by Anna Mia Davidson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961, the US ban on Cuban trade and travel, followed by a break in diplomatic relations, created a de facto embargo on information about Cuba. In 1999, at age 25, Anna Mia Davidson went to Cuba for the first time on a personal journey to capture the isolated island nation. Cuba was just beginning to recover from the "Special Period," the economic crisis that occurred after 1989 when Russia pulled its financial support after nearly four decades. On further travels during the following eight years, Davidson portrayed daily life in the cities, villages and countryside. Her black-and-white photographs are a testimony to the resilience of the Cuban people, who stood their ground during this transitional period with ingenuity and spirit. It was also here that Davidson came into contact with traditional forms of sustainable farming, a passion that has endured over the years.

Book Women Street Photographers

Download or read book Women Street Photographers written by Gulnara Samoilova and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a rising number of women throughout the world picking up their cameras and capturing their surroundings, this book explores the work of 100 women and the experiences behind their greatest images. Traditionally a male-dominated field, street photography is increasingly becoming the domain of women. This fantastic collection of images reflects that shift, showcasing 100 contemporary women street photographers working around the world today, accompanied by personal statements about their work. Variously joyful, unsettling and unexpected, the photographs capture a wide range of extraordinary moments. The volume is curated by Gulnara Samoilova, founder of the Women Street Photographers project: a website, social media platform and annual exhibition. Photographer Melissa Breyer's introductory essay explores how the genre has intersected with gender throughout history, looking at how cultural changes in gender roles have overlapped with technological developments in the camera to allow key historical figures to emerge. Her text is complemented by a foreword by renowned photojournalist Ami Vitale, whose career as a war photographer and, later, global travels with National Geographic have allowed a unique insight into the realities of working as a woman photographer in different countries. In turns intimate and candid, the photographs featured in this book offer a kaleidoscopic glimpse of what happens when women across the world are behind the camera.

Download or read book Cuba written by Christian Charlier and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of Cuba - Images of a different way of lifeIn 1997-98, when photographer Christian Charlier, together with Gregor Collienne, ventured to Cuba on behalf of an advertising agency, he teamed up with local connoisseur Jose Lambert to look for classic black and white photo options. At that time, Cuban streets were full of life and music, but also dominated by Fidel Castro's hour-long speeches and announcements. There was the official and the unofficial side: Government newspapers and official hotel reservations versus private experiences and invitations to stay overnight. Although access had to be earned through behaviour and eye contact, local hospitability and people's willingness to share the little that they had went far beyond what we are used to in Europe. During his three-week journey to encounter people, Christian Charlier was able to harvest a generous pool of images capturing his experiences in the style of street photography. He gathered photographic impressions in the city, in the country, of the decayed, frozen-in-time atmosphere of the 1950s, on tobacco plantations, at forbidden, but tolerated cockfights and spur-of-the-moment dance music events in remote buildings - at an astonished distance and through European eyes, but always with an intention to embrace the foreign and the unfamiliar. This took him through western Cuba with main stops in Havana, Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Pinar del Rio.
