Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Caughey Western History Prize Winner of the Robert G. Athearn Award Winner of the Lawrence W. Levine Award Winner of the TCU Texas Book Award Winner of the NACCS Tejas Foco Nonfiction Book Award Winner of the María Elena Martínez Prize Frederick Jackson Turner Award Finalist “A page-turner...Haunting...Bravely and convincingly urges us to think differently about Texas’s past.” —Texas Monthly Between 1910 and 1920, self-appointed protectors of the Texas–Mexico border—including members of the famed Texas Rangers—murdered hundreds of ethnic Mexicans living in Texas, many of whom were American citizens. Operating in remote rural areas, officers and vigilantes knew they could hang, shoot, burn, and beat victims to death without scrutiny. A culture of impunity prevailed. The abuses were so pervasive that in 1919 the Texas legislature investigated the charges and uncovered a clear pattern of state crime. Records of the proceedings were soon filed away as the Ranger myth flourished. A groundbreaking work of historical reconstruction, The Injustice Never Leaves You has upended Texas’s sense of its own history. A timely reminder of the dark side of American justice, it is a riveting story of race, power, and prejudice on the border. “It’s an apt moment for this book’s hard lessons...to go mainstream.” —Texas Observer “A reminder that government brutality on the border is nothing new.” —Los Angeles Review of Books

Book The Lone Star Ranger Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lone Star Ranger Classic Reprint written by Zane Grey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lone Star Ranger SO it was in him, then - an inherited fighting instinct, a driving intensity to kill. He was the last of the Duanes, that old fighting stock of Texas. But not the memory of his dead father, nor the pleading of his soft-voiced mother, nor the warning of this uncle who stood before him now, had brought to Buck Duane so much realization of the dark passionate strain in his blood. It was the recurrence, a hundredfold increased in power, of a strange emotion that for the last three years had arisen in him. "Yes, Cal Bain's in town, full of bad whisky an' huntin' for you," repeated the elder man, gravely. "It's the second time," muttered Duane, as if to himself. "Son, you can't avoid a meetin'. Leave town till Cal sobers up. He ain't got it in for you when he's not drinkin'." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Oh Ranger is a collection of exciting stories told directly by the experts ? national park rangers. From animal encounters to fire fighting and search and rescue missions, rangers share their most memorable, life changing experiences. This book is a tribute to National park Service employees everywhere and was inspired by the original storybook written in 1928 by Horace Albright, the first superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. His memory lives on in the heroic actions of all those who proudly wear the instantly recognizable green and grey and flat hat ? the rangers. Book The Voyageur Vol 1

Download or read book The Voyageur Vol 1 written by Pickering College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voyageur, Vol. 1: May, 1928 This Magazine is more in the nature of a family journal than an official school publication. We _may be pardoned, therefore, if we make particular mention of that one person to whose thoughtful care we owe so much - Miss Ancient, the guardian angel of Pickering College. On the occasion of the visit of Sir George Foster to Newmarket to speak on the League of Nations it was our pleasure and privilege to entertain him at. Dinner. He spoke to the school for a short time and it was evident that the passage of years makes no difference to the youthful spirit that is the real Sir George Foster. He compared present day educational facilities with those in existence when he was a boy and challenged the youth of Canada to measure up to their opportunities. A considerable number of members of the school subsequently attended the lecture in the Town Hall and heard from Canada's outstanding orator the story of the League and our part in it. Our editorial remarks would be incomplete without reference to the domin ating figure of our happy community - our Headmaster. And here at once we are faced with an almost insurmountable difficulty, for we write not only for ourselves, but also for a larger circle - thus must the torrent of our loyal pane gyric be decently dammed. Book Nation and Its Modes of Oppressions in South Asia

Download or read book Nation and Its Modes of Oppressions in South Asia written by Sajal Nag and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines nationhood as a concept and how it became the basis of political discourse in South Asia. It studies the emergence of nationalism in modern states as a powerful, omnipotent, and omnipresent form of political identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book examines the idea of a nation, as it originated in medieval Europe, as an unending process of 'othering' individuals, groups, and communities to establish its hegemony, exclusivity, and absolute power within a political discourse. It sheds light on how these new political frameworks in the name of nationalism resulted in conflicts and bloodshed. It unleashed politics of retribution and facilitated majoritarianism, minority persecution, and collective authoritarianism which devastated individuals and collectivities. Further, the author also discusses various prominent ideas and contemporary theories on nationalism alongside pivotal socio-cultural factors which have significantly shaped the formation of modern nation states and their politics. Topical and nuanced, this book will be indispensable to researchers, scholars, and readers interested in nationalism, political science, modern history, political theory, political philosophy, political sociology, political history, post-colonial studies, and South Asia studies.

Book Hermeneutics and the Problem of Translating Traditional Arabic Texts

Download or read book Hermeneutics and the Problem of Translating Traditional Arabic Texts written by Alsayed M. Aly Ismail and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the problematic issues arising when translating and interpreting classical Arabic texts, which represent a challenging business for many scholars, especially with regards to religious texts. Additionally, the reception of these interpretations and translations not only informs the perception of Muslims and their awareness of the outside world, but also impacts the vision and perception of non-Muslims of Islam and the Muslim world. Consequently, this book reconsiders the concepts of understanding and interpretation, and their nexus in the mechanism of translation, and proposes a novel, hermeneutic method of translating, interpreting, and understanding traditional and classical Arab texts. Handling the issues of understanding from a hermeneutical perspective is shown here to remove the possibility of translation and interpretation rendering a distorted translated text. Drawing on the powerful interpretive theories of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Martin Heidegger, the hermeneutic method of translation starts from a premise that the meaning of a classical text cannot be deduced solely by linguistic analysis of its words, but requires in-depth investigation of the invisible, contextual elements that control and shape its meaning. Traditional texts are seen in this model as ‘travelling texts’ whose meaning is transformed across time and space. The hermeneutic method of translation allows the translator to identify those elements from the real-world that informed a classical text at the time of its writing, so that it can be adapted and made relevant to its contemporary context. Traditional texts can enlighten our minds and cultivate our souls; religious texts can elevate our behavior and thinking, and help refine our confused contemporary lives. When texts become isolated from their world, they lose this lofty goal of enlightenment and elevation.
