Download or read book Robert Richardson s Rio Grande Southern Volume III written by Robert Richardson and published by Heimburger House Publishing Company. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third volume of his narrow gauge chronicle, noted narrow gauge preservationist Robert Richardson continues to take a close look at the Rio Grande Southern, the 172-mile narrow gauge route that wrapped itself around the craggy and forested San Juan Mountains between Durango and Ridgway, Colorado. In just two years, Otto Mears built a railroad that climbed four mountain passes and featured 142 bridges, including numerous high, spindly trestles. In this 224-page hardbound book, Bob hones in on the town of Ridgway, the various RGS “oasis” towns in the wilderness, mine-rich Telluride, the RGS’ locomotive fleet, the Galloping Goose era and high-in-the-sky Ophir. He also talks about important old RGS records and how he obtained copies, relates humorous insights about hunting season on the line, the Montezuma Lumber Company operations at McPhee, and the last runs of the famed RGS trains.

Book History of the Electric Automobile

Download or read book History of the Electric Automobile written by Ernest Henry Wakefield and published by SAE International. This book was released on 1993-08-01 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of the Electric Automobile covers the evolution from the first electric vehicles of the 1880s to the advances of today. Beginning with early electric vehicle development in England, France, and the United States, this book provides an in-depth look at the so-called "golden age of electric vehicles" (1895-1905), demonstrating the technological improvements and business risks of this era. This history also explores the "dead period" of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and the subsequent re-birth of interest in electric vehicles in the early 1960s. Events which have impacted the development of electric cars since then -- most notably the Electric Vehicle Act of 1976 -- are also examined. The book also features an appendix section containing such information as a name table of American electric cars, the Electric Vehicle Act of 1976, "nostalgia", and more. A glossary and index are also included. "For more than a century, nearly all seers who have predicted the role of electric vehicles in personal transportation have been wrong. This book records what actually happened, both within America and internationally." - Ernest H. Wakefield

Book Southern Pacific Lines

Download or read book Southern Pacific Lines written by Henry E. Bender and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Pacific and its predecessor railroads constructed and maintained depots throughout their territory. Between 1877 and 1894, a series of 26 numbered standard plans for depots was developed, and each plan was successively in use for a few years. By the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than 600 SP depots and telegraph offices. By then, many older depots, as well as most new ones at that time, had been or would be built to these standards. This book describes those depots. "The story of depots in SP's far-flung territory is an interesting one: when they were built, what they looked like, and when they were destroyed or were saved. Particularly for smaller communities, the depot was once an integral part of local life, so the life stories of these depots are an integral part of town history. "In addition to the 26 numbered standard depot designs, SP also built a number of other de facto standard depots, such as the colonnade style, and several such designs are described here. Also included are a group of stuccoed depots, modernized from older buildings, as well as standard-design depots built by predecessor railroads, such as the El Paso & Southwestern. Southern Pacific built each depot with an eye to what was expected to be needed. The overall size of the depot often reflected current or anticipated town size. The agent had quarters upstairs in a two-story depot, essential in places where suitable local housing was not available, but otherwise a one-story depot would be built. Freight rooms were sized according to the expected volume of business. Well-known depot historian Henry Bender has extensively researched this subject, and presents here an authoritative account of hundreds of SP standard depots, illustrated with a fine collection of photographs. The jacket painting is by noted railroad artist John R. Signor.
