Book The Quotable Newman Vol II

Download or read book The Quotable Newman Vol II written by Dave Armstrong and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume supplements "The Quotable Newman" (Sophia Institute Press, 2012), with 136 new topics and an overlap of 39 topics. Volume II is a bit more wide-ranging and perhaps also more "fun" (in a sense) for Newman devotees. Examples of the latter aspect might include Cardinal Newman's reflections upon his own writing and books, science and Christianity, heaven and hell, and old age. The citations also tend to be relatively shorter, and to include proportionately more material from his correspondence. I found two additional volumes of "Letters and Diaries" (volumes 27 and 28): covering the years of 1874-1878. They contain a lot of excellent observations and "gems" on a variety of topics, that I was delighted to find and now to pass along, for the education and edification of the reader. Once again, theology is the overwhelming emphasis. Anyone interested in Cardinal Newman's Catholic (or Anglican) doctrinal thinking and beliefs will, I trust, enjoy and learn from what I have compiled.

Book excerpt: "I want a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, and who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it." John Henry Newman To raise up Catholics who "know their creed so well that they can give an account of it," John Henry Newman-the 19th century British Cardinal recently pronounced "Blessed" by Pope Benedict XVI-preached thousands of sermons, wrote scores of books, and published countless articles explaining our Catholic faith, with particular attention to the relationship between faith and reason. So prodigious was Cardinal Newman's output that only a few souls have read all he wrote. Yet so keen was his intellect-and so profound his love for our Lord - that even those who've read just a few pages have profited greatly, growing quickly in knowledge, understanding, and renewed faith in God. Now comes Dave Armstrong, himself drawn forth from Protestantism by the power of Cardinal Newman's words. Eager to share Newman's wisdom with others, Armstrong has mined from over forty of Cardinal Newman's works to produce substantive passages on more than 100 topics ranging from Angel(more...)

Book Newman on Vatican II

Download or read book Newman on Vatican II written by Ian Turnbull Ker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman is often described as "the Father of the Second Vatican Council." He anticipated most of the Council's major documents, as well as being an inspiration to the theologians who were behind them. His writings offer an illuminating commentary both on the teachings of the Council and the way these have been implemented and interpreted in the post-conciliar period. This book is the first sustained attempt to consider what Newman's reaction to Vatican II would have been. As a theologian who on his own admission fought throughout his life against theological liberalism, yet who pioneered many of the themes of the Council in his own day, Newman is best described as a conservative radical who cannot be classed simply as either a conservative or liberal Catholic. At the time of the First Vatican Council, Newman adumbrated in his private letters a mini-theology of Councils, which casts much light on Vatican II and its aftermath. The leading Newman scholar, Ian Ker, argues that Newman would have greatly welcomed the reforms of the Council, but would have seen them in the light of his theory of doctrinal development, insisting that they must certainly be understood as changes but changes in continuity rather than discontinuity with the Church's tradition and past teachings. He would therefore have endorsed the so-called 'hermeneutic of reform in continuity' in regard to Vatican II, a hermeneutic first formulated by Pope Benedict XVI and subsequently confirmed by his successor, Pope Francis, and rejected both 'progressive' and ultra-conservative interpretations of the Council as a revolutionary event. Newman believed that what Councils fail to speak of is of great importance, and so a final chapter considers the kind of evangelization--a topic notably absent from the documents of Vatican II--Newman thought appropriate in the face of secularization.

Book Faith and Reason Through Christian History

Download or read book Faith and Reason Through Christian History written by Grant Kaplan and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to understand the history of Christian theology without taking into account the relationship between faith and reason. Many works give an overview of faith and reason, or outline key principles, while others put forward a thesis about how one should understand the relationship between faith and reason. In this theological essay, Grant Kaplan revisits the key figures and debates that shape how faith and reason relate. Divided into three parts, Kaplan invites readers into a conversation rather than a drive-by. Readers will encounter the words and arguments of some of Christianity’s greatest thinkers, some well-known (Augustine, Aquinas, Newman) and others nearly forgotten. Readings of these figures bring them to life in an accessible manner. In Faith and Reason through Christian History, the roughly fifty figures treated are given sufficient room to breathe. Rather than simply summarizing their thought, Kaplan traces their arguments through key texts. This book will appeal to a range of audiences: theologians and philosophers, instructors, graduate students, seminarians, lay study groups, and undergraduate theology majors. No book today accomplishes what this book does!

Book The Quotable Augustine Distinctively Catholic Elements in His Theology

Download or read book The Quotable Augustine Distinctively Catholic Elements in His Theology written by Dave Armstrong and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protestants (especially Reformed Protestants, or Calvinists) often assert that St. Augustine's views were closer to theirs than to the present-day Catholic Church. My aim is to systematically document St. Augustine's advocacy of positions that historic Protestantism has expressly rejected, and (conversely) detail his opposition to some doctrines or beliefs that it has (generally speaking) espoused. Quotations are drawn from 44 separate works of St. Augustine, arranged under 157 topics, and also arranged chronologically within topics, insofar as that can be determined. This helps to clarify any development in Augustine's views. Editorial input is kept to an absolute minimum: confined to an occasional bracketed clarification (usually a contextual matter or reference) or briefly stated fact considered to be indispensable in understanding some aspect of the quotation. I'm delighted to pass along to readers a ""capsulized version"" of St. Augustine's wonderful and eloquent theological writing.

This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Prose and Poetry of John Henry Newman IN the beginning of this little book of selections from the works of Cardinal Newman, it is best that I should avoid misunderstanding by saying that it is not intended for per sons who have already studied them and expect new and even subtle illumination. It is intended for those younger students who ought to begin to consider English style in the light of an art as soon as they begin to write. It is intended, too, for those and there are many - who admire Newman while they think that they are too busy to read his most important books. To the latter this volume may serve as a practical introduction to a new world; but too much in that way must not be expected of it it cannot supply the place of the culture without which the reader must miss some of the strongest and finest qualities of Newman's substance and style; and he who comes to it to complete an education not yet begun, will of course be disappointed.
