Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why Me, God? Why Now?" Some of the most sincere prayers we can address to God are, "Why, God?," "When, God?," or "How, God?" Facing our ignorance and lack of understanding is the basis of any ongoing prayer dialogue with God. Consider what happens when we're facing a life crisis -- death, illness, or loss -- and the only kind of prayer we're capable of is a string of questions flung to heaven. But we can also feel free to ask questions of God in everyday prayer as we look to him for motivation, inspiration, and understanding. An experienced pastor currently serving as Bishop of Charleston, South Carolina, Bishop Robert J. Baker says a question put to God can be a real sign of faith and trust, especially when we bring those questions to prayer. This unique aid to prayer and meditation will guide you to the core of your relationship with God and your understanding of his plan for you.

Book Petitionary Prayer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Scott A. Davison
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-02-09
  • ISBN : 0191075183
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book Petitionary Prayer written by Scott A. Davison and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the philosophical issues involved in the idea of petitionary prayer, where this is conceived as an activity designed to influence the action of the all-knowing, all-powerful, perfectly good God of traditional theism. Theists have always recognized various logical and moral limits to divine action in the world, but do these limits leave any space among God's reasons for petitionary prayer to make a difference? Petitionary Prayer: A Philosophical Investigation develops a new account of the conditions required for a petitionary prayer to be answered by employing the notion of contrastive explanation. With careful attention to recent developments in metaphysics, epistemology, and value theory, Scott A. Davison surveys the contemporary literature on this question. He considers questions about human freedom and responsibility in relation to different views of divine providence, along with the puzzles inherent in Christian teachings concerning petitionary prayer. Davison develops new challenges to the coherence of the idea of answered petitionary prayer based upon the nature of divine freedom, the limits of human knowledge, and the nature of those good things that require a recipient's permission before they can be given. He proposes new defences, building upon careful analysis of the shortcomings of previous proposals and clarifying the issues for future debate.

Download or read book The Hungry Heart written by Pierre Wolff and published by Liguori/Triumph. This book was released on 1995 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Wolff lectures widely on spirituality & he often leaves time for question & answer sessions. In fact, some of this best ideas for his highly popular books have come from the heartfelt questions of sincere seekers. The Hungry Heart is a book produced by readers as much as for them. over time, certain questions about prayer were asked so consistently & insistently that Wolff began to see a pattern: it's as though every seeker has about twenty questions that must be resolved before it's possible to continue the spiritual journey. And so, Wolff has gathered the "twenty most-asked questions about prayer" & provides his best answers. The questions come from every corner: The basics: Why pray? How do I pray? What is prayer, anyway? The practical: How long should I pray? How often should I pray? The personal: How does God answer prayer? How come I have never heard God's voice? The family: What should I tell my children about prayer? How do I pray with my children? Answers are offered with respect for the seriousness of the questioner & with a clarity the questions deserve. There is also a sense of affection & humor as well, offering a kind of you're-not-alone reassurance. Yet, Wolff's answers do not give a sense of "now you've got it right so there's no need for further discussion." Instead, he helps people resolve a tension that may have brought their prayer life to a halt, releasing the seeker to proceed. His answers build a reader's confidence to go to the same sources - the great "prayers" of biblical times, the saints & mystics of Christian tradition, contemporary spiritual leaders, representatives of the world's great religions - & see for themselves.
