Book Two Questers in the Twentieth century North Africa

Download or read book Two Questers in the Twentieth century North Africa written by Imen Ayari Cozzo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique exploration of the work of Paul Bowles and Ibrahim Alkoni, and reveals timely insights into the relationship between the West and the Orient, showing that they both challenge and extend existing scholarship on this subject. It builds on a sound theoretical platform which serves as a solid foundation for the analysis of the overarching theme. Theories of place, representation, Orientalism and post-colonialism are discussed in depth and are linked to the deconstruction and analysis of the selected literary texts, helping the reader understand the various quests and motivations of the protagonists of the works of Bowles and Alkoni. The first part of the book looks into the work of Bowles, and is based on the fact that many of the author’s texts revolve around the theme of encounters between Western and Eastern cultures. It adopts a specific focus on the North African space, which is depicted from a number of different points of view, including native, French, English and American perspectives. The second section discusses the work of the Libyan author Ibrahim Alkoni as a quester for a Mythical Identity. It introduces the reader to the significance of the desert in both classical and modern Arabic literature and its place in the Arabic cultural imaginary. This work is highly original both in its approach and subject matter, and, as such, it constitutes a valuable contribution to the study of comparative literature, Arabic literature, and postcolonial magical realist literature. It offers many original insights into this little studied field, demonstrating a successful venture into less-trodden terrain.

Download or read book In His Name written by Elisabeth Hurth and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1989 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a complement and a corrective to Albert Schweitzer's survey of the Leben-Jesu-Forschung, the study examines the emergence and development of the American quest for the historical Jesus. The study describes how the interest in the historical Jesus quest grew in America under the aegis of the Harvard-Göttingen axis and was adjusted to apologetic purposes on the basis of the post-Lockean theology of evidences. The study follows the course of the quest into biblical fiction and the Social Gospel movement and demonstrates that the American quest was marked by a pronounced confidence in the knowability and availability of the historical Jesus which suppressed a sustained concern with form critical procedures and Kerygmatic theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The skepticism holding sway in our public society practically screams that one cannot be serious and also be Christian. This work exposes the lie to such skepticism. This book adopts the scientific method to demonstrate the underlying facts recorded in the Gospels. The arguments rely solely upon reason and objective criteria to substantiate their conclusions. This fast-paced work by a nuclear engineering executive with more than thirty-five years of experience will defy expectations. Rigorous and systematic, this apologetic work is curated with verve, energy, and wit. It will pique the interests of academics and lay audience alike by answering these questions: •Why is the resurrection a necessary but not sufficient condition for the rise of Christianity? •Who founded Christianity? Hint: it was not Saint Paul, as many suppose. •Why did the church retain all of the Hebrew Bible, even though only a small fraction pertains directly to the New Testament? •How does the church rectify the necessity of justice with the virtue of mercy? •Why did his first followers call Jesus the Christ while fully aware that he did not satisfy the expectations of the Christ in the Hebrew Bible? At the end of the book, readers will ask the same question about Jesus that Jesus asked of the apostles, “Who do you say that I am?”

Whoever is successful must set out on a perilous quest to find and kill the False One, a mysterious being who attempted to overthrow Aarus a millennia ago. Much to everyone's surprise, and his own dismay, Orion is chosen as the next Quester and is soon sent out on his journey. He meets Cassi, a feisty young blacksmith, who joins him on his quest, and together they must face the killer Shadows who haunt the forest along the way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Most of the following essays reveal my interest in the significance of literary forms--both the short literary forms in the Gospels, such as pronouncement stories, and an entire Gospel as a formed narrative. I am interested in the significance of these forms, not just in literary classification systems . . . . I am interested in literary form as a clue to how the text may engage hearers and readers--impact their thought and life--if they are sensitive respondents. The Gospel stories have been shaped in ways that give them particular potentials for significant engagement. Study of literary form can help us recognize these potentials." --from the Introduction Contents Part I: Gospel Sayings and Stories 1 Tension in Synoptic Sayings and Stories 2 The Pronouncement Story and Its Types 3 Varieties of Synoptic Pronouncement Stories 4 Types and Functions of Apophthegms in the Synoptic Gospels 5 The Gospels and Narrative Literature 6 "You Shall Be Complete"--If Your Love Includes All (Matthew 5:48) Part II: The Gospel of Mark 7 The Disciples in Mark: The Function of a Narrative Role 8 The Gospel of Mark as Narrative Christology 9 Reading It Whole: The Function of Mark 8:34-35 in Mark's Story Part III: Paul's Gospel 10 Paul as Liberator and Oppressor: Evaluating Diverse Views of 1 Corinthians 11 Participation in Christ: A Central Theme in Pauline Soteriology

Book Chr tien Continued

Download or read book Chr tien Continued written by Matilda Tomaryn Bruckner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matilda Tomaryn Bruckner provides the first book-length examination of all four verse continuations that follow Chrétien's unfinished Grail story, a powerful site of rewriting from the late twelfth through the fifteenth centuries. By focusing on the dialogue between Chrétien and the verse continuators, this study demonstrates how the patterns and puzzles inscribed in the first author's romance continue to guide his successors, whose additions and reinventions throw new light back on the problems medieval readers and writers found in the mother text: questions about society and the individual; love, gender relations, and family ties; chivalry, violence, and religion; issues of collective authorship and doubled heroes, interpretation, rewriting, and canon formation. However far the continuations appear to wander from the master text, the manuscript tradition supports an implicit claim of oneness extending across the multiplicity of discordant voices combined in a dozen different manuscript compilations, the varying ensembles in which most medieval readers encountered Chrétien's Conte. Indeed, considered as a group the continuators show remarkable fidelity in integrating his romance's key elements, as they respond sympathetically to the dynamic incongruities and paradoxical structure of their model, its desire for and deferral of ending, its non-Aristotelian logic of 'and/both' in which contiguity forces interpretation and further narrative elaboration. Unlike their prose competitors, the verse continuators remain faithful to the dialectical movement inscribed across the interlace of two heroes' intertwined stories, the contradictory yet complementary spirit that propels Chrétien's decentered Conte du Graal.
