Book Industrial Harmony in Modern Japan

Download or read book Industrial Harmony in Modern Japan written by W. Dean Kinzley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic success in Japan has been attributed to the existence of harmonious labour-management relations. This book, first published in 1991, argues that this unique ‘culture of harmony’ was consciously invented and developed over the last century. A semi-bureaucratic organization called the Kyochokai was established in 1919 to meet the needs of an emerging industrial society. It took the lead in trying to define the values which would be suitable for a new Japanese-style industrial culture. The resulting ‘invented’ tradition has played an important role in the evolution and character of Japanese economic values and behaviour.

Book excerpt: 'This book is recommendable not only to students of Japanese political or labour history, but also to those interested in studying comparative industrial relations. It is an excellent example of how a historical account sheds much light on what might easily be swept aside under the umbrella of culture to explain a nation's industrial relations systems.' - Mari Sako, Work, Employment & Society.

Book Understanding Industrial Relations in Modern Japan

Download or read book Understanding Industrial Relations in Modern Japan written by Kazuo Koike and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1988-05-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book denies the cultural uniqueness of Japanese industrial relations and economy, characterised by permanent employment, seniority wages and enterprise unionism. The author provides an entirely new explanation of Japanese workers' high morale and Japan's impressive economic performance which, he argues, results from skilled employees working against a background of high technology. The argument of the book is based on intensive field-work, consisting of a series of interviews with veteran workers on the shop floor, and on an explicit comparative study between the USA and Japan.

Book Modern Japan A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Modern Japan A Very Short Introduction written by Christopher Goto-Jones and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-04-23 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan is arguably today's most successful industrial economy, combining almost unprecedented affluence with social stability and apparent harmony. Japanese goods and cultural products are consumed all over the world, ranging from animated movies and computer games all the way through to cars, semiconductors, and management techniques. In many ways, Japan is an icon of the modern world, and yet it remains something of an enigma to many, who see it as a confusing montage of the alien and the familiar, the ancient and modern. The aim of this Very Short Introduction is to explode the myths and explore the reality of modern Japan - by taking a concise look at its history, economy, politics, and culture. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book excerpt: Following a crushing defeat in World War II, Japan rose like a phoenix from the literal ashes to become a model of modernity and success, for decades Asia’s premier economic giant. Yet it remains a nation hobbled by rigid gender roles, protectionist policies, and a defensive, inflexible corporate system that has helped bring about political and economic stagnation. The unique social cohesion that enabled Japan to cope with adversity and develop swiftly has also encouraged isolationism, given rise to an arrogant and inflexible bureaucracy, and prevented the country from addressing difficult issues. Its culture of hard work—in fact, overwork—is legendary, but a declining population and restrictions on opportunity threaten the nation’s future. Keiko Hirata and Mark Warschauer have combined thoroughly researched deep analysis with engaging anecdotal material in this enlightening portrait of modern-day Japan, creating an honest and accessible critique that addresses issues from the economy and politics to immigration, education, and the increasing alienation of Japanese youth.

  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 1998-05-01

Download or read book The Rise of Asia written by Frank B. Tipton and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-05-01 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, Japan was seen as the peculiar exception in Asia: a highly dynamic economy isolated in an otherwise moribund continent. With the rise of the Southeast Asian and Chinese economies, however, it has now become clear that Asia as a whole is experiencing an extraordinary revolution which will result, within a very few years, in living standards for some countries being on a par with those in the West. The results of this transformation can only be guessed at, but The Rise of Asia adds a far greater sophistication to our understanding of how this process came about, treating the key areas of Asian life (economics, society and politics) as an integrated whole and avoiding the trap of most commentators, who see the phenomenon as an exclusively postwar economic issue. Balancing the uniquely Asian aspects with global developmental factors, Dr. Tipton creates a convincing picture of how this amazing change has occurred.

Book Modern Japan Social Industrial Political Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Japan Social Industrial Political Classic Reprint written by Amos S. Hershey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Japan Social Industrial Political This small volume is not a book of impressions; nor is it a tourist's record of experiences; nor can it be claimed that it is the result of years of study and observation growing out of a prolonged residence in Japan or contact with the Japanese people. Yet, after having devoted the leisure of several years to a study of things Japanese, the authors visited Japan and made their investigations under the guidance of friends and acquaintances - native Japanese and foreign residents of many years - who were far more familiar than they with Japan, its people, its laws, its traditions and its customs. In fact, they have gathered their information from many sources which would be difficult to indicate, nor would it be possible to mention the names of the numerous people who, whether by their writings or by direct personal assistance, have been so very helpful. The authors can here merely express, in a general way, their gratitude and appreciation for such aid, the results of which they have tried to sift and utilize to the best of their judgment and ability.
