Book The Queens of Society Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Queens of Society Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Grace Wharton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queens of Society, Vol. 1 of 2 Yet it is permitted to us to feel something of a kindred sensation in reading the Queens of Society of Grace and Philip Wharton. For here in these pages we meet with a charming company - and all, like Madame de Custine's guests, are women. Indeed, we are exceptionally fortunate, for, while the guests of the great French lady were limited to her contemporaries to a charming de Louvois, a charming de Crenay, a charming d'harville, a charming de Vaubecourt - we can move in a society invited from many times, and can, in fancy, feel that we look in the same hour upon the faces of fair and witty women, sundered in fact by gene rations. Indeed, we might perhaps be tempted to wish that an even wider range had been taken: that more Ladies Of Old Time had been hidden to the feast; that Queens of Society who reigned before the spacious Eliza bethan days might have been included. But this were unmannerly; this were to quarrel with our host and hostess. Madame de Custine's supper parties could not entertain all her friends. It is our part to accept with gratitude the company our hosts have been pleased to choose for us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution: Ohio Society Ladies - It gives me great pleasure to extend to this Third Continental Congress the best wishes of the State of Ohio. Appointed to the honorable position of State Regent of Ohio only a short time before the last Congress assembled, I was a quiet observer of its deliberations. I returned home, however, with the earnest purpose of doing a work in my State which would place it where it belongs - foremost among the common wealths of our great country. I hoped to be able to vie with the Regents of such States as Massachusetts, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, but as often happens - man proposes, God disposes. Illness overtook me for the first time in my life, andmy work languished. Still, I have to report the formation of the following chapters: The first chapter in Ohio was formed in Cleveland, 1891, and called The Western Reserve. Under the wise direction of its able Regent, Mrs. Elroy M. Avery, it has grown to be a power for the promotion of all that is patriotic, and in the spirit of the work of the objects of our Society. The Western Reserve Chapter now contains forty-eight mem bers, and has present at this Congress its Regent, Mrs. Avery, a delegate, and two alternates.
