Book A Beginner s Guide to America

Download or read book A Beginner s Guide to America written by Roya Hakakian and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stirring, witty, and poignant glimpse into the bewildering American immigrant experience from someone who has lived it. Hakakian's "love letter to the nation that took her in [is also] a timely reminder of what millions of human beings endure when they uproot their lives to become Americans by choice" (The Boston Globe). Into the maelstrom of unprecedented contemporary debates about immigrants in the United States, this perfectly timed book gives us a portrait of what the new immigrant experience in America is really like. Written as a "guide" for the newly arrived, and providing "practical information and advice," Roya Hakakian, an immigrant herself, reveals what those who settle here love about the country, what they miss about their homes, the cruelty of some Americans, and the unceasing generosity of others. She captures the texture of life in a new place in all its complexity, laying bare both its beauty and its darkness as she discusses race, sex, love, death, consumerism, and what it is like to be from a country that is in America's crosshairs. Her tenderly perceptive and surprisingly humorous account invites us to see ourselves as we appear to others, making it possible for us to rediscover our many American gifts through the perspective of the outsider. In shattering myths and embracing painful contradictions that are unique to this place, A Beginner's Guide to America is Hakakian's candid love letter to America.

As the youngest marcher in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Albama, Lynda Blackmon Lowery proved that young adults can be heroes. Jailed eleven times before her fifteenth birthday, Lowery fought alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. for the rights of African-Americans. In this memoir, she shows today's young readers what it means to fight nonviolently (even when the police are using violence, as in the Bloody Sunday protest) and how it felt to be part of changing American history. Straightforward and inspiring, this beautifully illustrated memoir brings readers into the middle of the Civil Rights Movement, complementing Common Core classroom learning and bringing history alive for young readers.

Book We Speak Your Language

Download or read book We Speak Your Language written by Nelson Yusheng Lu and published by I WING PRESS INC. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For its first 34 years, Queen Public Library faced the challenge of meeting the educational needs of a population that exploded from about 150,000 in 1896 to 1.1 million in the 1920s. By then, this vital institution was operating 18 branches and two dozen satellites that served schools, hospitals and more across 109 square miles without a main headquarters. The days of decentralization finally ended April 1, 1930 with the opening of a large, modern library at 89-14 Parsons Boulevard in the heart of bustling downtown Jamaica. Some 7,000 children and adults poured through the doors of the new Central Library that day to absorb the vast collection of fiction, non-fiction and reference books and newspapers and magazines. For more than any time in its 90-year history, the Central Library serves the surrounding neighborhood. With collections and programming dedicated to the community and newest immigrant groups, customers not only have the advantage of resources of a Central Library but more importantly a library that reflects their neighborhood. Today, the Central Library for Queens Public Library welcomes over 1.5 million people and transforms lives on each visit. The Queens Public Library and its Central Library embraces our responsibility and looks forward to the continuing this high quality service though the rest of the 21st century.

Book The Queen s Library

Download or read book The Queen s Library written by Cynthia J. Brown and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do the physical characteristics of the books acquired by elite women in the late medieval and early modern periods tell us about their owners, and what in particular can their illustrations—especially their illustrations of women—reveal? Centered on Anne, duchess of Brittany and twice queen of France, with reference to her contemporaries and successors, The Queen's Library examines the cultural issues surrounding female modes of empowerment and book production. The book aims to uncover the harmonies and conflicts that surfaced in male-authored, male-illustrated works for and about women. In her interdisciplinary investigation of the cultural and political legacy of Anne of Brittany and her female contemporaries, Cynthia J. Brown argues that the verbal and visual imagery used to represent these women of influence was necessarily complex because of its inherently conflicting portrayal of power and subordination. She contends that it can be understood fully only by drawing on the intersection of pertinent literary, historical, codicological, and art historical sources. In The Queen's Library, Brown examines depictions of women of power in five spheres that tellingly expose this tension: rituals of urban and royal reception; the politics of female personification allegories; the "famous-women" topos; women in mourning; and women mourned.
