Bringing together a comprehensive collection of her surviving correspondence, the Letters of Elizabeth Rigby, Lady Eastlake reveals significant new material about this extraordinary figure in Victorian society. The scope of Lady Eastlake’s writing is wide and interdisciplinary, which recommends her as a significant figure in Victorian culture, giving rise to revelations about the ways in which different cultural activities were linked. Lady Eastlake lived for extended periods of time abroad in Germany and Estonia, and wrote an early work about her impressions of the Baltic, her subsequent writing took the form of reviews for the periodical press, including reviews of Jane Eyre, Vanity Fair, Ruskin, Coleridge, and Madame de Stael. She also wrote on women’s subjects, including articles on the education of women. However, the great proportions of her publications are art-related reviews: she wrote one of earliest critical texts on photography and produced several essays on artists. The lively correspondence of Lady Eastlake not only contributes to a more holistic understanding of nineteenth-century culture, it also shows how a well connected woman could play an important role in the Victorian art world.

Rather than focusing on one subject only, the sample of papers collected may be viewed as a representative choice of various aspects. Some contributions have more the character of surveys on the state of the art while others stress original research. We fou~d it proper to group the papers under two main themes. Part I covers information, risk aversion, and capital market theory. Part II is devoted to management, policy, and empirical evidence. Two contributions, we think, deserved to break this allocation and to be placed in a prologue. The ideas expressed by Jost B. Walther, although meant as opening address, draw interesting parallels for risk and capital in genetics and evolution. An old, fundamental pro blem was asked and solved by Martin J. Beckmann: how does risk affect saving? The wise answer (Martin's 60th birthday is in July 1984) is both smart and simple, although the proof requires sophisticated dynamic programming. As always, such a work must be the result of a special occasion.

Book excerpt: We propose a tax-adjusted q model with physical and intangible assets and estimate it with a self-collected comprehensive database of intangible assets. The presence of intangibles changes the accounting and economic measures of q. We show that when tax changes are temporary, the q model can be estimated by adjusting for the firm’s intangible stock and intangible intensity. We estimate our model using temporary investment tax incentive policies in the United States in the early 2000s. When the q-model accounts for intangible assets, the estimated investment elasticity to tax incentives is generally larger than otherwise. It is also larger for intangible-intensive firms, and increases with firm size.
