Download or read book The Heart of the Curriculum written by E. Ehrlich Smith and published by . This book was released on 1924 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a brief historical sketch of the development of the elementary school curriculum, a defense of reading as a subject not to be confined to the mastery of skills, and specific constructive suggestions for the improvement of both reading instruction and the curriculum as a whole. For those elementary school pupils who will never enter college, the general curriculum--and the reading curriculum especially--must be revised with the aim of preparing these pupils for full, effective participation in American democratic society. To that end, the reading selections included herein are taken from actual classroom practice, with examples of how to direct the reading of literature, and a selection of materials on the subjects of geography, history, and civics.

Download or read book Handel s Messiah written by Amanda Babington and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-06-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The soundtrack of the Christmas season for many music lovers, Messiah is performed annually by choral societies across the world. And so, perhaps unsurprisingly, many aspects of it have been explored by scholars over the years. The work is the subject of several listeners’ guides and there are a number of books and articles of various lengths that describe the biographical circumstances of the work’s formation and details of its many performances, many including lists of singers for each performance (an area that has itself spawned a whole field of research). There has been no extensive study of the creative process of Messiah, however, since 1969. This book seeks to redress this imbalance by providing a thorough investigation of the work’s creative process. Beginning with the creative process of the libretto, it examines the earliest sketches, Handel’s use of pre-existent material, alterations made to the autograph score, and the latest versions of movements. Each stage of composition is examined via primary source material, with particular reference to the autograph score and conducting score. Each chapter is formed as a case study and contains related discussion points for use in teaching or study settings.
Download or read book Religious Faith and Teacher Knowledge in English Language Teaching written by Bradley Baurain and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) stands at an active crossroads – issues of language, culture, learning, identity, morality, and spirituality mix daily in classrooms around the world. What roles might teachers’ personal religious beliefs play in their professional activities and contexts? Until recently, such questions had been largely excluded from academic conversations in TESOL. Yet the qualitative research at the core of this book, framed and presented within a teacher knowledge paradigm, demonstrates that personal faith and professional identities and practices can, and do, interact and interrelate in ways that are both meaningful and problematic. This study’s Christian TESOL teacher participants, working overseas in Southeast Asia, perceived, explained, and interpreted a variety of such connections within their lived experience. As a result, the beliefs-practices nexus deserves to be further theorized, researched, and discussed. Religious beliefs and human spirituality, as foundational and enduring aspects of human thought and culture, and thus of teaching and learning, deserve a place at the TESOL table.
