Download or read book Church Monarch and Bible in Sixteenth Century England written by Roland H. Worth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King James Version of the Bible is seldom viewed as a radical text, yet the history of English Bible translation in the sixteenth century, culminating in the now-familiar King James Version, is a complex one, revealing that Bible translation did not occur in a vacuum but within a web of politics, shifting religious pressures and repressions. The struggle to translate the Bible into English is here examined within the political context of the age. Emphasis is placed upon the varying royal policies and how these resulted in policy swings and the subsequent encouragement or discouragement of religious change and new Bible translations. The book is arranged chronologically, spanning the changing environments for Bible translation under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth I, and James, who varied from forbidding such translations to encouraging them. A bibliography and index are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King James Bible was a landmark in the history of the English language, and an inspiration to poets, dramatists, artists and politicians. Without the King James Bible there would have been no Paradise Lost, no Pilgrim's Progress, no Handel's Messiah. Yet more than a literary, even more than a religious influence, it was seen as a social, economic and political text. Those seeking to overthrow the English monarchy and those wanting to retain it, both sought support from the same Bible. So how did this remarkable translation come to be written? To answer this question is to throw open the doors of a world which was being transformed by the new technology of printing. In reading about the greatest English text ever produced we must close our eyes to our own world in which books are plentiful and readily available and enter another, very different universe...

Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 1 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current controversy over the Bible's text and translations is creating confusing division within the ranks of Fundamentalism. A mass of m isinformation fuels the debate. Scores of men realize the enormous errors being popularized but hesitate to engender further debate by speaking out. The confusion, however, is now so pervasive within Fundamentalism that the true, biblical and historical facts on the text, transmission, and translations of Scripture must be restated in layman's terms. These facts argue eloquently for the unity, not the division of God's people on these issues.
