Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nature we are the recipients, not the originators. The Earth offers and upholds, it embraces and nurtures, like a U-shape that catches all. With its responsive care and receptive power, it gives us the opportunity to attain goals that would have been impossible with our own efforts. The end times can be recognized by a danger that lacks subtlety. It no longer hides in the shadows or whispers its intentions; instead, it boldly parades itself in front of our eyes, enticing us with its promises of temporary satisfaction. Such is the consequence of our indifference, our failure to appreciate the love and blessings of creation. A vast, unnatural sea stretches out before us, a water body devoid of life. There are no fish, no birds hovering above looking for their next meal. It is a desolate, silent world. As a sequel to If the Largest Ship Could Feel Its Own Waves, this collection of philosophical poetry tells of waters too mighty and vast to be contained by any shore. Adrift in the tumultuous sea, the stakes are higher than ever before. You must brave the waves, for if you succumb to the current, you will be lost forever.

Book Handbook of Teichm ller Theory

Download or read book Handbook of Teichm ller Theory written by Athanase Papadopoulos and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2007 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Teichmuller space of a surface was introduced by O. Teichmuller in the 1930s. It is a basic tool in the study of Riemann's moduli spaces and the mapping class groups. These objects are fundamental in several fields of mathematics, including algebraic geometry, number theory, topology, geometry, and dynamics. The original setting of Teichmuller theory is complex analysis. The work of Thurston in the 1970s brought techniques of hyperbolic geometry to the study of Teichmuller space and its asymptotic geometry. Teichmuller spaces are also studied from the point of view of the representation theory of the fundamental group of the surface in a Lie group $G$, most notably $G=\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and $G=\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. In the 1980s, there evolved an essentially combinatorial treatment of the Teichmuller and moduli spaces involving techniques and ideas from high-energy physics, namely from string theory. The current research interests include the quantization of Teichmuller space, the Weil-Petersson symplectic and Poisson geometry of this space as well as gauge-theoretic extensions of these structures. The quantization theories can lead to new invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The purpose of this handbook is to give a panorama of some of the most important aspects of Teichmuller theory. The handbook should be useful to specialists in the field, to graduate students, and more generally to mathematicians who want to learn about the subject. All the chapters are self-contained and have a pedagogical character. They are written by leading experts in the subject.

Book Braids and Dynamics

Download or read book Braids and Dynamics written by Jean-Luc Thiffeault and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph uses braids to explore dynamics on surfaces, with an eye towards applications to mixing in fluids. The text uses the particular example of taffy pulling devices to represent pseudo-Anosov maps in practice. In addition, its final chapters also briefly discuss current applications in the emerging field of analyzing braids created from trajectory data. While written with beginning graduate students, advanced undergraduates, or practicing applied mathematicians in mind, the book is also suitable for pure mathematicians seeking real-world examples. Readers can benefit from some knowledge of homotopy and homology groups, but these concepts are briefly reviewed. Some familiarity with Matlab is also helpful for the computational examples.

Book AIR CRASH INVESTIGATIONS Loss of Cargo Door The Near Crash of United Airlines Flight 811

Download or read book AIR CRASH INVESTIGATIONS Loss of Cargo Door The Near Crash of United Airlines Flight 811 written by Dirk Barreveld and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-12 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 24, 1989, United Airlines flight 811, a Boeing 747-122, lost a cargo door as it was climbing between 22,000 and 23,000 feet after taking off from Honolulu, Hawaii, en route to Sydney, Australia with 355 persons aboard. As a result of the incident nine of the passengers were ejected from the airplane and lost at sea. The cargo door was recovered in two pieces from the ocean floor at a depth of 14,200 feet on September 26 and October 1, 1990. The probable cause of this accident was a faulty switch or wiring in the door control system. Contributing to the cause of the accident was a deficiency in the design of the cargo door locking mechanisms. Also contributing to the accident was a lack of timely corrective actions by Boeing and the FAA following a 1987 cargo door opening incident on a Pan Am B-747.

Book The Labyrinth of Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Lockwood
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2007-07-26
  • ISBN : 0191622699
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book The Labyrinth of Time written by Michael Lockwood and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern physics has revealed the universe as a much stranger place than we could have imagined. The puzzle at the centre of our knowledge of the universe is time. Michael Lockwood takes the reader on a fascinating journey into the nature of things. He investigates philosophical questions about past, present, and future, our experience of time, and the possibility of time travel. And he provides the most careful, lively, and up-to-date introduction to the physics of time and the structure of the universe. He guides us step by step through relativity theory and quantum physics, introducing and explaining the ground-breaking ideas of Newton and Boltzmann, Einstein and Schroedinger, Penrose and Hawking. We zoom in on the behaviour of molecules and atoms, and pull back to survey the expansion of the universe. We learn about entropy and gravity, black holes and wormholes, about how it all began and where we are all headed. Lockwood's aim is not just to boggle the mind but to lead us towards an understanding of the science and philosophy. Things will never seem the same again after a voyage through The Labyrinth of Time.

Book Atlas of Taphonomic Identifications

Download or read book Atlas of Taphonomic Identifications written by Yolanda Fernandez-Jalvo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the atlas is to provide images of taphonomic modifications, making it as comprehensive as possible with evidence presently available. This volume is intended both as a field guide for identifying taphonomic modifications in the field, and for use in the laboratory when collections of fossils are being analyzed. Images in the book are a combination of scanning electron micrographs, regular photographs, cross-sections of bones and line drawings and graphs. By providing good quality illustrations of taphonomic modifications, with links between similar types of modification, the atlas provides a reference source for identifying the agents responsible for the modifications, the processes by which they were formed, and the potential bias introduced by the processes. The authors also aim to emphasize on the directions they consider taphonomic studies should be headed. Firstly, we should seek to quantify the degree of bias introduced into a fossil fauna and to take account of this bias before interpreting the palaeoecology of the fossil site. Secondly, we should recognize that taphonomic modifications increase the information encoded in fossils by identifying perimortem and postmortem contexts. This provides a more dynamic and realistic view of the past.
