These feminist scholars bridge preexisting divides between bio-psychological, sociological, and cultural perspectives to explain the ways that women’s desires, goals, and identities interact with culturally situated systems in order to develop more complex theories about the psychological underpinnings of patriarchy and to inform more socially progressive policies to improve the lives of women and men globally.

And it's compatible with rewarding "the good ones," and singling out other women to serve as warnings to those who are out of order. It's also common for women to serve as scapegoats, be burned as witches, and treated as pariahs. Manne examines recent and current events such as the Isla Vista killings by Elliot Rodger, the case of the convicted serial rapist Daniel Holtzclaw, who preyed on African-American women as a police officer in Oklahoma City, Rush Limbaugh's diatribe against Sandra Fluke, and the "misogyny speech" of Julia Gillard, then Prime Minister of Australia, which went viral on YouTube. The book shows how these events, among others, set the stage for the 2016 US presidential election. Not only was the misogyny leveled against Hillary Clinton predictable in both quantity and quality, Manne argues it was predictable that many people would be prepared to forgive and forget regarding Donald Trump's history of sexual assault and harassment. Through hermeneutic methodology, this thesis explores a depth psychological perspective of cultural trauma and cultural complexes to illuminate the impacts of patriarchy on the psychological development of girls and women. Additionally, through alchemical hermeneutic inquiry, it explores the cultivation of feminine power emerging in the author's life working with specific archetypes from cultural mythology. The research offers a depth psychological understanding of patriarchy as a cultural trauma for women, characterized by institutionally supported male privilege, gender discrimination, marginalization, oppression, and violence, and its resulting internalization as a cultural complex. Psychotherapeutic interventions are explored for incorporating personal association and active imagination with cultural mythology to bring the limiting internalized patriarchy within the psyches of impacted women into consciousness and to restore their sense of feminine power.

Is there a way to explore female submission in all of its complexity—not denying its appeal in certain instances, and not buying into an antifeminist, sexist, or misogynistic perspective? We Are Not Born Submissive offers the first in-depth philosophical exploration of female submission, focusing on the thinking of Simone de Beauvoir, and more recent work in feminist philosophy, epistemology, and political theory.
