Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American People: A Study in National Psychology the Harvesting of a Nation It would be tedious and valueless to repeat the proof I adduced that the character of Americans and the institutions Of America owe their influence to English inspiration, for to say more would be merely to reproduce in amplified form what has already been stated. T O prove a negative is an im possibility; and my critics have contented them selves with questioning my deductions without bringing evidence to challenge my reasoning. An examination Of the institutions Of America, Of its political philosophy, Of its system Of jurisprudence; Of the thought and customs and viewpoint Of life of its people, will show that they are English in ori gin and that they have not been colored or moulded by those Of any other nation. Book The Psychology of Attention

Download or read book The Psychology of Attention written by Harold Pashler and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-07-26 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, attention has been one of the most investigated areas of research in perception and cognition. However, the literature on the field contains a bewildering array of findings, and empirical progress has not been matched by consensus on major theoretical issues. The Psychology of Attention presents a systematic review of the main lines of research on attention; the topics range from perception of threshold stimuli to memory storage and decision making. The book develops empirical generalizations about the major issues and suggests possible underlying theoretical principles. Pashler argues that widely assumed notions of processing resources and automaticity are of limited value in understanding human information processing. He proposes a central bottleneck for decision making and memory retrieval, and describes evidence that distinguishes this limitation from perceptual limitations and limited-capacity short-term memory.

Book The English People

Download or read book The English People written by Émile Boutmy and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English People: A Study of Their Political Psychology When the publisher of this volume invited me to write a preface to it I felt that there was some measure of presumption in accepting the invitation, there being no need to introduce to the English public the author of the original work, as the following anecdote will testify. Some years ago M. Emile Boutmy received at Oxford the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law, and the way in which the University was moved to confer that distinction upon him was in this wise. Another Frenchman, who had written upon English institutions, thought that the crimson and scarlet of the Oxford doctorate would appropriately adorn his labours. He therefore appealed to M. Boutmy to lay his claims before the academical authorities. But Oxford, better acquainted with the work of the self-effacing advocate than of the less modest claimant, replied to the former in the words of the Puritan maiden of Longfellow's metrical prose, "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American People, Vol. 1: A Study in National Psychology American Republic. Puritanism left its impress upon the life and thought of England, and having done its work as the agent of Destiny became merged in other forces. Puritanism in America, when it ceased to be merely a religious symbol, was still a social force, and it is to-day. Vitalized by the principles of its foundation, the Puritan com monwealth grew apace. She sowed the seeds of intolerance and brought forth liberty. She preached blind obedience to authority and was the first to resist when it became galling. She taught thrift and elevated the material to the dignity of a virtue. She made acquisition a duty. She was free, and she was shackled to a narrow and harsh theology that dwarfed expansion. And yet she expanded, sending forth her sons into the barren places, who, full Of energy and the love of gain that was as much a part of the Puritan character as his faith in the immutable workings of a higher power, gave new lustre to his name and made the world marvel. Where France failed, England succeeded. What Spain attempted, England accomplished. Holland planted and England reaped. Sweden dreamed and England worked. Download or read book The Psychology Everyday Life Classic Reprint written by James Drever and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology Everyday Life Such being the nature and scope of psychology, the ques tion that next presents itself is: what is the use of psychology? What possible service can it render us to study psychology The answer is not difficult. Our entire waking life is devoted to activities which realize certain aims, to the forming of resolutions or the carrying out of purposes. At least half probably far more than half with most people - of our aims, resolutions, and purposes involve in a greater or less degree reference also to the activities of other people, involve co-operating with other people or opposing them, protecting them or protecting ourselves against them, advising or educating, checking or punishing them. Our whole active life, therefore, may be said to be devoted to the controlling and modifying of our behaviour by ourselves or others, or the controlling and modifying of the behaviour of other people by us, and we study behaviour in order through the better understanding of it to be able better to modify and control it.
