We have greater knowledge and understanding of the unconscious, of sexuality, aggression, the self, personal relations, the influence of childhood, morality, guilt, dreams and so on. But modern personality has little or nothing to say about any need for God. In accounts of psychologists, Jung apart, God is dead. Peter Morea seeks to remedy this lack by combining the insights of scientific psychology and religion in an approach to the study of personality. He takes six accounts of personality given by famous Christians, and presents them as significant theories in their own right, relevant now, using them to engage in dialogue with the variety of modern theories. The Christians he chooses are varied in time and approach: Augustine of Hippo, Søren Kierkegaard, Thomas Merton, Blaise Pascal, Teresa of Avila and Karl Rahner. After they have been studied, Peter Morea examines the similarities and differences between scientific and Christian theories of personality, such as in their analysis of self. Then he considers the materialist assumptions behind scientific theories, and in a subsequent chapter the different assumptions of Christian accounts. His conclusion is that those of Christian theories are as reasonable as those behind science, and that in spite of differences between the two, the task of relating them has already begun with existential and humanistic psychology.
