Book Studying Classroom Teaching as a Medium for Professional Development

Download or read book Studying Classroom Teaching as a Medium for Professional Development written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB) and the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNCMI) took advantage of a unique opportunity to bring educators together. In August 2000, following the Ninth International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-9) in Makuhari, Japan, MSEB and USNCMI capitalized on the presence of mathematics educators in attendance from the United States and Japan by holding a two and a half-day workshop on the professional development of mathematics teachers. This workshop used the expertise of the participants from the two countries to develop a better, more flexible, and more useful understanding of the knowledge that is needed to teach well and how to help teachers to obtain this knowledge. A major focus of the workshop was to discuss teachers' opportunities in both societies-using teaching practice as a medium for professional development. Another focus of the workshop addressed practice by considering the records of teaching, including videos of classroom lessons and cases describing teachers and their work. These proceedings reflect the activities and discussion of the workshop using both print and video to enable others to share in their experience

Book The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga

Download or read book The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga written by C. G. Jung and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model of something that was almost completely lacking in Western psychology--an account of the development phases of higher consciousness.... Jung's insistence on the psychogenic and symbolic significance of such states is even more timely now than then. As R. D. Laing stated... 'It was Jung who broke the ground here, but few followed him.'"--From the introduction by Sonu Shamdasani Jung's seminar on Kundalini yoga, presented to the Psychological Club in Zurich in 1932, has been widely regarded as a milestone in the psychological understanding of Eastern thought and of the symbolic transformations of inner experience. Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model for the developmental phases of higher consciousness, and he interpreted its symbols in terms of the process of individuation. With sensitivity toward a new generation's interest in alternative religions and psychological exploration, Sonu Shamdasani has brought together the lectures and discussions from this seminar. In this volume, he re-creates for today's reader the fascination with which many intellectuals of prewar Europe regarded Eastern spirituality as they discovered more and more of its resources, from yoga to tantric texts. Reconstructing this seminar through new documentation, Shamdasani explains, in his introduction, why Jung thought that the comprehension of Eastern thought was essential if Western psychology was to develop. He goes on to orient today's audience toward an appreciation of some of the questions that stirred the minds of Jung and his seminar group: What is the relation between Eastern schools of liberation and Western psychotherapy? What connection is there between esoteric religious traditions and spontaneous individual experience? What light do the symbols of Kundalini yoga shed on conditions diagnosed as psychotic? Not only were these questions important to analysts in the 1930s but, as Shamdasani stresses, they continue to have psychological relevance for readers on the threshold of the twenty-first century. This volume also offers newly translated material from Jung's German language seminars, a seminar by the indologist Wilhelm Hauer presented in conjunction with that of Jung, illustrations of the cakras, and Sir John Woodroffe's classic translation of the tantric text, the Sat-cakra Nirupana. ?

Book The Language of Mediums and Psychics

Download or read book The Language of Mediums and Psychics written by Robin Wooffitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every week thousands of people in Europe and the USA consult psychic practitioners. Communication is crucial to the performance of psychic powers in a range of settings. Psychic practitioners use language to demonstrate their powers, whether they are reporting the words of their spirit contacts or interpreting the spread of Tarot cards. Their clients also accept or reject this information through talk. This book presents the first sustained study of the verbal interaction between the various kinds of psychic practitioners and their clients. Using conversation analysis, Robin Wooffitt examines the structure of the interaction, focusing on the ways in which psychic practitioners and their clients establish the authenticity of the claimed paranormal powers. Adopting a neutral standpoint towards the status of the claims of psychic practitioners, the book raises important issues about the role of social science in understanding the activities of psychic practitioners and other kinds of parapsychological phenomena. This highly original study will appeal to students and scholars of discourse studies, and to sociologists interested in conversation analysis. It is written in a style accessible to non-specialists, and will also interest parapsychologists and social scientists studying psychic phenomena and the paranormal.

Book Multilingual and Translingual Practices in English Medium Instruction

Download or read book Multilingual and Translingual Practices in English Medium Instruction written by Dogan Yuksel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Medium Instruction (EMI) refers to the use of the English language to teach academic subjects where first language of the majority of the population is not English. One popular implementation of EMI, the Multilingual Model, would imply that some aspects (e.g. courses, sessions in some courses, and/or assessment) are taught through English, whereas the first language of the students is used in some other respects. This volume explores context-related ways in which the multilingual EMI model and translingual practices are seen and enacted in higher education contexts across the globe. Research on this topic is not only timely but also very much needed, particularly in contexts that are relatively new to EMI, as well as in contexts where monolingual forms of teaching and monolingual institutional policies still prevail. Empirical, research-based studies as well as theoretical reviews that centre around multilingual and translingual practices in partial and full (i.e. English-only) EMI settings are elaborated, with case studies from Colombia, Indonesia, Iraq, Norway, Qatar, Spain, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, the UK and the USA.

Book Qualitative Research Methods in English Medium Instruction for Emerging Researchers

Download or read book Qualitative Research Methods in English Medium Instruction for Emerging Researchers written by Samantha M. Curle and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book will guide researchers on how to apply qualitative research methods to explore English-medium instruction (EMI) issues, such as classroom interactions, teachers’ and students’ perceptions on language and pedagogical challenges, and stakeholders’ views on the implementation of EMI. Each chapter focuses on a specific type of qualitative research methodology, beginning with an overview of the research and the method used, before presenting a unique case study. Chapters will also identify the process that EMI researchers went through to conduct their research, the key dilemmas they faced, and focus particularly on the methodological issues they encountered. By exploring these issues and providing up-to-date insights in contexts across the globe, this book informs theory or the lack thereof, underlying research into the phenomenon of EMI. This text will be indispensable for researchers who want to learn and acquire skills in conducting qualitative research in EMI, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students reading in the fields of applied linguistics and language education.

Book The Affective Dimension in English Medium Instruction in Higher Education

This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together current research on the impact of affective factors on learning in English-medium instruction (EMI), exploring both student and teacher perspectives. With the number of EMI programs rapidly increasing around the world, it offers a timely investigation into the affective dimension in these settings to provide a better understanding of how programs can be streamlined and enhanced. The chapters cover topics such as learner motivation, anxiety, emotions, willingness to communicate, teacher motivation and teacher beliefs. They offer new insights into the field with data from Anglophone and non-Anglophone countries, monolingual and multilingual territories as well as migration contexts. Each chapter concludes with recommendations for both language and content teachers in higher education settings. This book will be of interest to researchers working in the fields of applied linguistics, bilingual education, multilingualism and language teaching as well as teacher trainers and adult education instructors seeking to expand their knowledge on the affective dimension.

Book Student Motivation in English Medium Instruction

Download or read book Student Motivation in English Medium Instruction written by Naoko Kojima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Japanese students’ learning experiences and challenges in English medium instruction (EMI) from motivational perspectives. Using self-determination theory (SDT) as the framework, the first part reveals a lack of the three psychological needs of SDT (autonomy, competence, relatedness) that cause loss of students’ initial interest in learning English language and content. The author outlines pedagogical interventions that can be implemented in order to make the learning environment better. The second half of the book shows the effects these interventions had on the fulfillment of the three psychological needs, especially perceived relatedness and autonomy. In conclusion, the author focuses on the importance of listening to Japanese students’ voices and building a community that can motivate students, thus maximizing the pedagogical effectiveness of EMI. This volume will be useful to anyone involved in motivation, language learning or EMI research, pedagogy or practice.
