Book The Psalms in the Early Irish Church

Download or read book The Psalms in the Early Irish Church written by Martin J. McNamara and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A creative, independent, Irish exegetical tradition was well established by the year 700 CE, influencing Northumbria but not Continental Europe. This book contains eight studies by the distinguished Irish biblical scholar, Martin McNamara, which he has published over the past twenty-five years, on the Latin biblical texts (Vulgate, Gallicanum and Jerome's Hebraicum) of the Psalter and commentaries on it in Ireland from 600 CE onwards. The oldest Irish Vulgate text, the Cathach of St Columba of Iona (died 597), shows signs of correction against the Irish recension of the Hebrew text. The central exegetical tradition is strongly Antiochene, being dependent on the commentary of Theodore of Mopsuestia (in Julian's translation), while another branch understands the Psalms as principally about David, rather than christologically or as about later Jewish history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the only Welsh antiphonal known and discusses in particular the material for services celebrating the memory of the Welsh patron saint. The book has a full listing and description of the contents of the Penpont Antiphonal, National Library of Wales MS. 20541 E, and discusses the significance of the Office of St David. The chants and the literary text are described and discussed, supported by full transcriptions of the musical and literary texts, and by facsimile reproduction of the manuscript folios. The office is considered in its historical perspective, as evidence of the active cultivation of music in Wales during the Middle Ages, and for its relationship to other similar late medieval offices and to Rhigyfarch's Life of St David.

Book Cardiganshire County History Volume 2

Download or read book Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 written by Geraint H. Jenkins and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 is published by the University of Wales Press on behalf of the Ceredigion Historical Society, in association with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. This volume provides a comprehensive and authoritative account, written by distinguished authors in fifteen chapters, of the wide range of social, economic, political, religious and cultural forces that shaped the ethos and character of the county of Cardiganshire over a period of 600 years. This was a period of great turbulence and change. It witnessed conquest and castle-building, the impact of the Glyndŵr rebellion, the coming of the Protestant Reformation, and the turmoil of civil war. Over time, the inhabitants of the county developed a sense of themselves as a distinctive people who dwelt in a recognisable entity. From very early on, literate people took pride in their native patch; in the eyes of the learned Sulien (d. 1091) and his sons, the land of Ceredig was a sacred patria. Poets and scribes burnished the reputation of the county, and a vibrant poem by Siôn Morys in 1577 maintained that it was the best of shires and ‘the fold of the generous ones’.
