Download or read book The Prunus mume Genome written by Zhihong Gao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the current status of P. mume research, highlighting how the new data coming from the release of the P. mume genomes can advance science and help to solve a number of problems facing the P. mume industry. Prunus mume, which was domesticated in China more than 3,000 years ago as an ornamental plant and for its fruit, is one of the first genomes among the Prunus subfamilies of the Rosaceae family that has been sequenced. Combining the P. mume genome with available data, scientists have succeeded in reconstructing nine ancestral chromosomes of the Rosaceae family, as well as the chromosome fusion, fission and duplication history of three major subfamilies. The P. mume genome sequence adds to our understanding of Rosaceae evolution and provides an important basis for the improvement of fruit trees. This book offers an essential a guide for all those who are interested in gene discovery, comparative genomics, molecular breeding and new breeding techniques; and will be particularly useful for scientists, breeders, university students, and public sector institutes that are involved in the P. mume industry and/or Rosaceae research.

Book The Almond Tree Genome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Raquel Sánchez-Pérez
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-06-27
  • ISBN : 3030303020
  • Pages : 181 pages

Download or read book The Almond Tree Genome written by Raquel Sánchez-Pérez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the latest information on almond genomics and transcriptomics, with a particular focus on cutting-edge findings, tools, and strategies employed in genome sequencing and analysis with regard to the most important agronomic traits. Cultivated almond [(Prunus dulcis (Miller) D. A. Webb, syn. Prunus amygdalus Batsch., Amygdalus communis L., Amygdalus dulcis Mill.)] is a tree crop producing seeds of great economic interest, and adapted to hot and dry climates. Domesticated in Southeast Asia, its small diploid genome and phenotypic diversity make it an ideal model to complement genomics studies on peach, generally considered to be the reference Prunus species. Both represent consanguineous species that evolved in two distinct environments: warmer and more humid in the case of peach, and colder and xerophytic for almond. The advent of affordable whole-genome sequencing, in combination with existing Prunus functional genomics data, has now made it possible to leverage the novel diversity found in almond, providing an unmatched resource for the genetic improvement of this species.

Book From Functional Genomics to Biotechnology in Ornamental Plants

Download or read book From Functional Genomics to Biotechnology in Ornamental Plants written by Swee-Suak Ko and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries plants of a broad taxonomical background have been bred and commercialized because of the beauty of their flowers. However, until recently genomic analyses of ornamentals remained a challenge because of their large genome sizes and high ploidy levels. In the last decade, increasingly affordable sequencing technologies and powerful bioinformatic approaches resulted in the complete sequencing of several horticultural species genomes and the characterization of their transcriptomes. These developments enabled research on many challenging topics. This Research Topic gives you a primer into them by featuring a broad range of original research contributions on some of the most active areas of ornamental plant research: the genetic basis of flower morphology, scent, and color, the genetic regulation of physiology as well as the epigenetic factors affecting vegetative development. In this context, one of the most significant hurdles to functional genetic studies in ornamentals is achieving efficient genetic transformation. Several articles in this Research Topic describe strategies to tackle this challenge and present insights into the way transgene activity renders novel flower phenotypes.

Book Japanese Flowering Cherries

Download or read book Japanese Flowering Cherries written by Wybe Kuitert and published by Timber Press (OR). This book was released on 1999 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wybe Kuitert has written an account of Japanese cherries that spans disciplines as far ranging as history, geography, botany, and, of course, horticulture. Confusion and misunderstandings, particularly regarding the names of the plants, have hampered their appreciation in the West. Fluent in Japanese and a professor of landscape architecture at the Kyoto University of Art and Design, Wybe Kuitert consulted many sources and references never before translated into English, some of them ancient. This book will become an indispensable resource for sorting out incorrect and improper plant names that have stymied nurseries, collectors, and amateur gardeners. Full and complete information is also provided for the cultivation and propagation of cherries. A complete botanical key to the classification of Japanese cherries has been contributed by Dutch plant breeder Aric Peterse.

Book The Pear Genome

  • Author : Schuyler S. Korban
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2019-07-03
  • ISBN : 3030110486
  • Pages : 315 pages

Download or read book The Pear Genome written by Schuyler S. Korban and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the pear genome, this book covers the current state of knowledge regarding genetic and genomic resources, breeding approaches and strategies, as well as cutting-edge content on how these tools and resources are being / soon will be utilized to pursue genetic improvement efforts that will combine fruit quality, high productivity, precocious fruit bearing, and long postharvest storage life, along with elevated levels of resistance to various major diseases and insect pests. Throughout, the book also explores potential opportunities and challenges in genomic analysis, sequence assembly, structural features, as well as functional studies that will assist in future genetic improvement efforts for pears. The pear (Pyrus), an important tree fruit crop, is grown worldwide, and has several economically relevant cultivars. In recent years, modern genetic and genomic tools have resulted in the development of a wide variety of valuable resources for the pear. In the past few years, completion of whole genome assemblies of ‘Dangshansuli’, an Asian pear, and ‘Bartlett’, a European pear, have paved the way for new discoveries regarding for example, the pear’s genomic structure, chromosome evolution, and patterns of genetic variation. This wealth of new resources will have a major impact on our knowledge of the pear genome; in turn, these resources and knowledge will have significant impacts on future genetic improvement efforts.
