Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prose Voyage Imaginaire Before 1800: An Historical and Critical Study Apology is perhaps due to a suffering public for adding to the already large stock of historical and critical naterial on the novel and romance;' but it may be urged in defence of this volume that it treats of a field which has so far been ignored by the chief critics and historians. The Germans, as the bibliography and the first chapter will indicate, have done considerable with the utopias, but not in a literary way; their interest has centered not in the literary or artistic qualities and significance of these works, but in tleir intellectual influence. Even historians of fiction have, while dealing with occasional works of this class, tended to ignore the type as a type; or when they did recognize its existence, they have not given it consideration enough to reder the formulation of an accurate definition possible. This dissertation has sought, therefore, to give Within the limits set for it a thorough historical survey of a class of prose fiction, as well as to define that class. Book The Journey of Niels Klim to the World Underground

Download or read book The Journey of Niels Klim to the World Underground written by Ludvig Holberg and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1960-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fantastic adventures at the center of the earth await a penniless Norwegian student after he plunges into a bottomless hole in a cave. Niels Klim discovers worlds within our own?exotic civilizations and fabulous creatures scattered across the underside of the earth's crust and, at the earth's center, a small, inhabited planet orbiting around a miniature sun. In an epic journey, Klim visits countries led by sentient and contemplative trees, a kingdom of intelligent apes preoccupied with fashion and change, a land whose inhabitants don?t speak out of their mouths, neighboring countries of birds locked in an eternal war, and a land where string basses talk musically to one another. Brave, inquisitive, and greedy, Klim faces many challenges, the greatest of which are his own temptations. øThe Journey of Niels Klim to the World Underground is a classic in speculative fiction and was the first fully realized novel set underground in a hollow earth. First published in 1741, it has earned comparisons to Jonathan Swift?s contemporaneous fantasy, Gulliver?s Travels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the novel, V oyages el avantures de] aques Masse, caused some thing of a stir during the first half of the eighteenth century, its author, Simon Tyssot de Patot (1655-1738), remained largely unknown in his lifetime, and it is only in this century that he has been recognized as one of the countless soldiers in the vast army of philosophes that assaulted the bastions of religious, political and sodallife in Europe of the late seven 1 teenth and early eighteenth centuries. Tyssot was a Huguenot who lived most of his life in Holland where he pursued a career as professor of mathematics in the sodal and cultural 1 Tyssot and his work seem to have been first brought to the attention of modem writers by the German critics during their investigation of the type of desert island or robinsonade literature that preceded and followed Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. The earliest reference I have found occurs in A. Kippenberg, Robinson in Deutschland bis zur Insel Felsenburg (1713-43), Hanover, 1892, pp. 66-67. Tyssot's name and work appear to have been first linked with the development of socialism in A. Lichtenberger, Le Socialisme au XVIIIe siecle, Paris, 1895, p. 44. Tyssot's Voyages et avantures de]aques Masse was discussed for its literary merits in A. LeBreton, Le Roman au dix huitieme siecle, Paris, 1898. LeBreton did not know that Tyssot was the author.

Rather, he shows how Melville not only knew about the novelist's craft, but also appropriated and transformed a series of distinct genres.

Book Political Philosophy in Gulliver s Travels

Download or read book Political Philosophy in Gulliver s Travels written by Lloyd W. Robertson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels from a political philosophy perspective. When authors have focused on politics in Swift’s writings, this has usually meant a study of how Swift located himself on issues of his day such as church and state, and Ireland. Robertson claims by contrast that Gulliver’s Travels is fundamentally a book about the “ancients” (e.g. Plato, Aristotle), and the “moderns” (science and technology), and their contrasting views about the human condition. The claim that the Travels is “a kind of prolegomena” to political philosophy leaves open the possibility that it does not achieve, or seek to achieve, a fusion of various teachings but rather uses the device of alien societies to point us to uncomfortable aspects of political philosophy’s “larger questions” we are prone to ignore. Swift, Robertson argues, draws our attention to some version of the classical republic, as idealized in Aristotle’s political writings and in Plato’s Republic, as opposed to a modern regime which, at its best or most intellectual, emphasizes modern science and technology in combination as a way to improve the human condition.
