Book excerpt: Lord James Warren, Viscount Sudbury, lives a quiet, safe, and predictable life alone on his estate in Suffolk, only traveling to London once a year to visit family and satisfy his more forbidden needs. But this year, his routine is shattered when his niece and nephew ask him to help a beautiful young man they've only just met. Kyle Allen, alone and running from his abusive lover, stirs feelings in James he has long denied for fear of tarnishing his reputation and losing his family's love. Though undeniably drawn to Kyle, James's honor demands he keep that part of himself completely secret, even if Kyle is feeling the attraction as well, despite the pain and betrayal he's recently suffered. Assistance and a future for Kyle might be secured, but then they would face a choice: stay apart and continue leading half-lives... or risk everything for love.

Book The Promise of Elsewhere

Download or read book The Promise of Elsewhere written by Brad Leithauser and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comic novel about a Midwestern professor who tries to prop up his failing prospects for happiness by setting out on the Journey of a Lifetime. Louie Hake is forty-three and teaches architectural history at a third-rate college in Michigan. His second marriage is collapsing, and he's facing a potentially disastrous medical diagnosis. In an attempt to fend off what has become a soul-crushing existential crisis, he decides to treat himself to a tour of the world's most breathtaking architectural sites. Perhaps not surprisingly, Louie gets waylaid on his very first stop in Rome--ludicrously, spectacularly so--and fails to reach most of his other destinations. He embarks on a doomed romance with a jilted bride celebrating her ruined marriage plans alone in London. And in the Arctic he finds that turf houses and aluminum sheds don't amount to much of an architectural tradition. But it turns out that there's another sort of architecture there: icebergs the size of cathedrals, bobbing beside a strange and wondrous landscape. It soon becomes clear that Louie's grand journey is less about where his wanderings have taken him and more about where his past encounters with romance have not. Whether pursuing his first wife, or his estranged current wife, or the older woman he kissed just once a quarter-century ago, Louie reveals himself to be endearing, deeply touching, wonderfully ridiculous . . . and destined to find love in all the wrong places.

Book For the Promise of Tomorrow

Download or read book For the Promise of Tomorrow written by Elizabeth Scott-Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: in Brussels 2034 Cyrile Standaert, a middle-aged engineer, loses his partner following a hit and run car accident. Thereafter his life and mental health begin to unravel, and his two teenage children in turn begin to slide into truancy and drugs. It is at this point that he is visited by his future self, who has been drafted into a time travel pilot programme run by scientist Sofie Debroux. Future Cyrile offers Present Cyrile the chance to go back to 2008 and change his future. In return for this, he is tasked with helping Sofie's grandfather, former physics lecturer Herman Debroux, to escape a fate of homelessness and alcoholism. Having returned to 2008 Cyrile meets a young Herman and his wife, Nina Debroux, just as they are beginning their married life. The couple take Cyrile into their house as a lodger, and the trio then attempt to set up young Past Cyril of 2008 with a teenage Genevieve Wilkes. They find themselves confronted with the tribal politics of the time, separationist tensions, personal suspicions and cohabitation frictions, not to mention a few time-travel paradoxes along the way. In terms of its inspiration, many aspects of it are based on my own experiences living, working and growing up in Brussels and the Flemish belt around it, along with the differences in culture between myself (a half-Scot, half-Cypriot who is Belgian by proxy) and the local communities. The book is also inspired by a few personal hypotheses about how the coronavirus pandemic will affect our lives, change our habits and shape our views in the future, based on the ways it has done so already.

Book Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow

Download or read book Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow written by Brian Fies and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow?, the long-awaited follow-up to Mom's Cancer, is a unique graphic novel that tells the story of a young boy and his relationship with his father. Spanning the period from the 1939 New York World's Fair to the last Apollo space mission in 1975, it is told through the eyes of a boy as he grows up in an era that was optimistic and ambitious, fueled by industry, engines, electricity, rockets, and the atom bomb. An insightful look at relationships and the promise of the future, award-winning author Brian Fies presents his story in a way that only comics and graphic novels can. Interspersed with the comic book adventures of Commander Cap Crater (created by Fies to mirror the styles of the comics and the time periods he is depicting), and mixing art and historical photographs, this groundbreaking graphic novel is a lively trip through a half century of technological evolution. It is also a perceptive look at the changing moods of our nation-and the enduring promise of the future. Praise for Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow? “A graphic novel that looks like TV’s “Futurama” bred with The Golden Age of Comic Books, Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow? is at times charming, at times sad and foreboding, and always thought provoking.” —Air & Space Smithsonian "A hopelessly optimistic moon-age daydream"—The Village Voice “An exceptional and highly engaging experience.” —The Miami Herald "Whatever Happened To The World Of Tomorrow is a very special book that will speak to you on so many levels. And at the end of it, when you sit there and think on what you’ve just read, it may even make you, like it did me, realise that Fies’ vision of our past and his hope for the future is something we can all share in. Quite brilliant."—Richard Bruton, forbiddenplanet.co.uk F&P level: Y

Book The Promise of Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book The Promise of Artificial Intelligence written by Brian Cantwell Smith and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that—despite dramatic advances in the field—artificial intelligence is nowhere near developing systems that are genuinely intelligent. In this provocative book, Brian Cantwell Smith argues that artificial intelligence is nowhere near developing systems that are genuinely intelligent. Second wave AI, machine learning, even visions of third-wave AI: none will lead to human-level intelligence and judgment, which have been honed over millennia. Recent advances in AI may be of epochal significance, but human intelligence is of a different order than even the most powerful calculative ability enabled by new computational capacities. Smith calls this AI ability “reckoning,” and argues that it does not lead to full human judgment—dispassionate, deliberative thought grounded in ethical commitment and responsible action. Taking judgment as the ultimate goal of intelligence, Smith examines the history of AI from its first-wave origins (“good old-fashioned AI,” or GOFAI) to such celebrated second-wave approaches as machine learning, paying particular attention to recent advances that have led to excitement, anxiety, and debate. He considers each AI technology's underlying assumptions, the conceptions of intelligence targeted at each stage, and the successes achieved so far. Smith unpacks the notion of intelligence itself—what sort humans have, and what sort AI aims at. Smith worries that, impressed by AI's reckoning prowess, we will shift our expectations of human intelligence. What we should do, he argues, is learn to use AI for the reckoning tasks at which it excels while we strengthen our commitment to judgment, ethics, and the world.

When Olympia leaves her small Virginia town, she doesn't expect to look back, much less ever come home. But after a year on the road, her sister's engagement pulls Olympia into everything she left behind: her family, her husband, and the grief she's been trying to forget. She's determined to stay a few days, maybe a week--just enough time to visit gravestones and sign off on the divorce her husband, Spencer, asked for. But he's reeling from their shared loss, as well as complications with his aging parents, leaving his heart just as fragile as Olympia's. The more time they spend in each other's orbit, the less sure they are they'll be able to walk away for good. As family secrets come to light and family bonds stretch to the breaking point, Olympia must decide where she's going next and where she belongs. She's used to coping with life's complications alone, but maybe the best way to heal is together.
