Book excerpt: The Wise Legacy explores the profound impact of Sidney Wise, the late Charles A. Dana Professor of Government at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Sid encouraged many of his students, including prominent politicians, educators, religious leaders, lobbyists and business executives, to pursue public service careers, and was responsible for creating an elite Washington network before online networking existed. Wise's mentees include Ronald Reagan's Chief of Staff Kenneth Duberstein, SEC Chair Mary Schapiro, Federal Judge D. Brooks Smith, HBO CEO Richard Plepler, and United Negro College Fund CEO and former Congressman William Gray, among many others. This book features 41 interviews that reveal Wise's passion for educating and guiding students, his astute use of networking to create a group of alumni dedicated to public service (many of whom serve today, years since Sid's passing), as well as his never-abused hidden power in our country. Throughout the book emerges Wise's passion for educating and guiding students, Wise's astute use of networking to create a group of alumni dedicated to public service (many of whom serve today, years since Sid's passing), as well as his never-abused hidden power in our country. This book affirms the power of networking, and how working with others can define careers, and cause meaningful change.

Book excerpt: What prenatal tests and down syndrome reveal about our reproductive choices When Alison Piepmeier—scholar of feminism and disability studies, and mother of Maybelle, an eight-year-old girl with Down syndrome—died of cancer in August 2016, she left behind an important unfinished manuscript about motherhood, prenatal testing, and disability. In Unexpected, George Estreich and Rachel Adams pick up where she left off, honoring the important research of their friend and colleague, as well as adding new perspectives to her work. Based on interviews with parents of children with Down syndrome, as well as women who terminated their pregnancies because their fetus was identified as having the condition, Unexpected paints an intimate, nuanced picture of reproductive choice in today’s world. Piepmeier takes us inside her own daughter’s life, showing how Down syndrome is misunderstood, stigmatized, and condemned, particularly in the context of prenatal testing. At a time when medical technology is rapidly advancing, Unexpected provides a much-needed perspective on our complex, and frequently troubling, understanding of Down syndrome.

Book The Aesthetics of the Ephemeral

Download or read book The Aesthetics of the Ephemeral written by Jennifer Duprey and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzes theatrical texts and performances while providing political and historical mappings. In The Aesthetics of the Ephemeral, Jennifer Duprey examines five contemporary plays from Barcelona: Olors and Testament by Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, Antígona by Jordi Coca, Forasters by Sergi Belbel, and Temptació by Carles Batlle. She argues that in both the theatrical text and its performance an aesthetics of the ephemeral materializes that is related to specific manifestations of cultural and historical memory in Spain and Catalonia. These manifestations of memory include historical concerns such as the possibility of another form of justice in predicaments of violence after the Civil War, and they also include contemporary issues such as the production of ruins by the processes of gentrification in Barcelona, the complexity of immigration in Spain, and the destruction or preservation of Catalan cultural legacies. In her analysis of these topics, Duprey engages and expands on theories related to questions of subjectivity and identity in late modernity. This book will be of interest to those concerned with Iberian cultural studies and with how theater reflects on and contributes to contemporary political dialogue.

Book The Lennox Legacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : DE Rivett
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 1996-01-01
  • ISBN : 0643105778
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book The Lennox Legacy written by DE Rivett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lennox Legacy: The history of the CSIRO Laboratory at 343 Royal Parade Parkville records many of the events and incidents associated with the genesis and development of the Division of Protein Chemistry over a period of more than fifty years. This book has been titled in honour of Dr Francis Gordon Lennox, the Laboratory's founder and a man who believed that science has an important part to play in bettering the well-being of all Australians. His vision, over the years, of the critical importance of protein chemistry to Australian science and industry, was central to the Laboratory's national and international achievements. The book has been written three parts: *Part 1 attempts to trace the historical record of appointments and changes in research direction that have occurred in the laboratory from 1940 to the present day. *Part 2 presents a more detailed description of the major scientific activities that have been carried out in the Laboratory. It reveals how fundamental studies went hand-in-hand with applied research and thereby contributed greatly to the understanding of practical problems and their possible solution. *Part 3 provides a complete list of Patents and Publications arranged in decades for easy perusal. As former chief Gordon Crewther states in his foreword: "Of necessity, the story is incomplete, but because it records the stresses, exhilarations, frustrations, rewards, good fellowship, team spirit, irritations and humourous interludes arising from the research objectives of the Division and their accomplishment, there is something of interest for all present and past members of staff of CSIRO. The less technical sections, the occasional insights into/behind the scenes' activities, the glimpses of individual personalities, and the occasional reflections on science management, provides worthwhile reading for a more general audience."
