Book excerpt: Pre- and post-intervention data on health outcomes, absenteeism, and productivity from a longitudinal, quasi-experimental design field study of office workers was used to evaluate the economic consequences of two ergonomic interventions. Researchers assigned individuals in the study to three groups: a group that received an ergonomically designed chair and office ergonomics training; a group that received office ergonomics training only; and a control group. The results show that while training alone has neither a statistically significant effect on health nor productivity, the chair-with-training intervention substantially reduced pain and improved productivity. Neither intervention affected sick leave hours.

Book excerpt: Undertaking economic evaluations of workplace-based occupational health and safety interventions can be difficult, reflected by the significant lack of literature, evidence and guidance on the subject. Particular difficulties include: complex labour legislation; differences in the perception of health risks associated with work experiences amongst workplace parties and policy makers; the burden of costs and consequences being borne by different stakeholders in the system; conflicting incentives and priorities between the multiple stakeholders; lack of consensus about what ought to count as a benefit or cost of intervening or not intervening; multiple providers of indemnity and medical care coverage; and industry-specific human resources practices making it difficult to identify all work-related illnesses and injuries. In addition, most health economics methods books are designed for use in a clinical setting, which cannot be adapted for the workplace setting. In the face of such barriers, it is not surprising that few studies of occupational health and safety interventions contain an economic evaluation. This book aims to lay the foundations for a systematic methodology of economic evaluation of workplace interventions, by identifying the main barriers to research of high quality and practical relevance, and proposing a research strategy to remedy these weaknesses. Context chapters provide a wealth of background material ranging from a presentation of the broad conceptualization of work and health, to suggestions for strategies in confronting the dearth of data often experienced by occupational health and safety researchers. They take into account the varying institutional and regulatory approaches in different international jurisdictions. Specific topic chapters delve into the principles and application of economic evaluation methods relevant to this setting: study design, type of analysis, costs, consequences, uncertainty, and equity are all covered, providing guidance on analytical and decision making challenges. Book excerpt: It is not uncommon to encounter a situation in ergonomic intervention research where there is resistance toward proposed changes to someone's work habits or workstation. Often, this has negative consequences when attempting to study the effectiveness of an intervention. Additionally, research into the implementation of an ergonomic intervention is sparse. Therefore, in an attempt to combat these problems, a study was conducted in the ergonomics laboratory at North Carolina State University. The experiment assessed the effects of positive feedback and reinforcement on the acceptance of an ergonomic intervention. Two groups of subjects were used; the first, or control, group performed a screwdriving task using an ergonomic intervention without interruption. The second group was the feedback group, who received positive feedback and reinforcement while performing the same task. Significant results from posttest survey questions showed a 29-57% more positive response from the feedback group. Additionally, there was no instance where the feedback group answered significantly less positively. With respect to the two remaining types of data, performance and perceived discomfort, no significant difference was seen either between groups or across the two days of testing. From these results, it can be seen that the feedback seemed to positively influence the acceptance of the ergonomic intervention. However, it did not negatively affect a person's performance on the task nor did it influence her or his perceived discomfort. The results would indicate that positive feedback during the implementation phase of ergonomic intervention research has a positive impact on the perceptions of the person working with the intervention. These results are consistent with the body of literature on the positive effects of participatory ergonomics and may lead to more effective techniques for conducting ergonomic intervention research.
