Book National Identity and the British Musical

Download or read book National Identity and the British Musical written by Grace Barnes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Identity and the British Musical: From Blood Brothers to Cinderella examines the myths associated with national identity which are reproduced by the British musical and asks why the genre continues to uphold, instead of challenging, outdated ideals. All too often, UK musicals reinforce national identity clichés and caricatures, conflate 'England' with 'Britain' and depict a mono-cultural nation viewed through a nostalgic lens. Through case studies and analysis of British musicals such as Blood Brothers, Six, Half a Sixpence and Billy Elliot, this book examines the place of the British musical within a text-based theatrical heritage and asks what, or whose, Britain is being represented by home grown musicals. The sheer number of people engaging with shows bestows enormous power upon the genre and yet critics display a reluctance to analyse the cultural meanings produced by new work, or to hold work to account for production teams and narratives which continue to shun diversity and inclusive practices. The question this book poses is: what kind of industry do we want to see in Britain in the next ten years? And what kind of show do we want representing the nation in the future?

Book When Cheers Are Not Enough

Download or read book When Cheers Are Not Enough written by Slavko Ray and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baker, Conrad, Angus, and Masaccio are high school teachers who occasionally meet to jam as a crude alt-rock garage band. They are also diehard hockey fans desperate to see an end to their beloved Toronto Mighty Pines’ fifty-seven year Cup drought. But another early playoff exit soon has the foursome resolving to support the team in ways beyond just cheering. Enlisting the vocal talents of a new teacher named Perreault, the weekend rockers restyle themselves as a musical coven and decide to call on supernatural forces for help with their hockey woes. By transforming popular song lyrics into hockey spells, they create a magical playlist of tunes and dip their toes into witchcraft. A bit of help from a seasoned Wiccan and her talented apprentice impacts the five fans’ world in subtle ways, tuning them into the love, loss, and mystery saturating their ordinary lives. Will any of it serve to bring the Clarence Cup, hockey’s Holy Grail, back to the city of Toronto? That depends, of course, on how the Mighty Pines fare during an erratic and unpredictable 2019-2020 season—a season like few others, and one that will leave more than just the Pines’ fortunes in question.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Davis
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-03-28
  • ISBN : 0429624360
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book The Global 1980s written by Jonathan Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global 1980s takes an international perspective on the upheaval across the world during the long 1980s (1979–1991) with the end of the Cold War, a move towards a free-market economic system, and the increasing connectedness of the world. The 1980s was a decade of unimaginable change. At its start, dictatorships across the world appeared stable, the state was still seen as having a role to play in ensuring people’s well-being, and the Cold War seemed set to continue long into the future. By the end of the decade, dictatorships had fallen, globalisation was on the march and the opening of the Berlin Wall paved the way for the end of the Cold War. Divided into four chronological parts, sixteen chapters on themes including domestic politics, the global spread of democracy, international relations and global concerns including AIDS, acid rain and nuclear war, explore how world-wide change was initiated both from above and below. The book covers such topics as ideological changes in the liberal democratic west and socialist east, protests against nuclear weapons and for democratic governance, global environmental worries, and the end of apartheid in South Africa. Offering an overview of a decade in transition, as the global order established after 1945 broke down and a new, globalised world order emerged, and supported by case studies from across the world, this truly global book is an essential resource for students and scholars of the long 1980s and the twentieth century more generally.

Book Selected Writings From South Melbourne

Download or read book Selected Writings From South Melbourne written by Tim Dalton and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-09 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of work is nothing more than a 'capture' of some pieces that I produced during the two years that I worked at Collarts. Most of these thoughts were originally produced as blog posts, first thoughts or critical responses to media reports. Yes, most of these writings are unconnected to one another but I wanted to capture my thoughts before they were lost in the ether. I believe it is best to lead by example and my desire for Collarts' students to write blogs where they are able to collegially critique one another provided the impetus for this work. Indeed this strategy was successful and Collart's now has a student body that expresses their thoughts via the Collarts' blogs. Job done.

Book The Beatles and Vocal Expression

Download or read book The Beatles and Vocal Expression written by Bláithín Duggan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beatles and Vocal Expression examines popular song through the topic of paralanguage – a sub-category of nonverbal communication that addresses characteristics of speech that modify meaning and convey emotion. It responds to the general consensus regarding the limitations of Western art music notation to analyse popular song, assesses paralinguistic voice qualities giving rise to expressive tropes within and across songs, and lastly addresses gaps in existing Beatles scholarship. Taking The Beatles’ UK studio albums (1963–1970), paralinguistic voice qualities are examined in relation to concepts, characteristics, metaphors, and functions of paralanguage in vocal performance. Tropes, such as rising and falling intonation on words of woe, have historical connections to performative and conversational techniques. This interdisciplinary analysis is achieved through musicology, sound studies, applied linguistics, and cultural history. The new methodology locates paralinguistic voice qualities in recordings, identifies features, shows functions, and draws aural threads within and across popular songs.

Book Museums Migration and Identity in Europe

Download or read book Museums Migration and Identity in Europe written by Christopher Whitehead and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imperatives surrounding museum representations of place have shifted from the late eighteenth century to today. The political significance of place itself has changed and continues to change at all scales, from local, civic, regional to national and supranational. At the same time, changes in population flows, migration patterns and demographic movement now underscore both cultural and political practice, be it in the accommodation of ’diversity’ in cultural and social policy, scholarly explorations of hybridity or in state immigration controls. This book investigates the historical and contemporary relationships between museums, places and identities. It brings together contributions from international scholars, academics, practitioners from museums and public institutions, policymakers, and representatives of associations and migrant communities to explore all these issues.
