Book State and Rural Development in the Post Revolutionary Iran

Download or read book State and Rural Development in the Post Revolutionary Iran written by A. Shakoori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-05-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural reform policy has been an important part of the government policy in post-revolutionary Iran. This book seeks to examine the post-revolutionary rural policies and their socio-economic impact on rural people. After reviewing the main debates on rural development literature and providing the historical background of agrarian change in the pre-revolutionary era, it examines the post-revolutionary rural reforms in separate parts: the effects of the government agricultural policies on agricultural performance and the post-revolutionary reorganisational policies and the impact of rural strategies on the socio-economy of the rural life at village level.

Book Land and Revolution in Iran 1960 1980

Download or read book Land and Revolution in Iran 1960 1980 written by Eric J. Hooglund and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carried out by the government of the shah between 1962 and 1971, the Iranian land reform was one of the most ambitious such undertakings in modern Middle Eastern history. Yet, beneath apparent statistical success, the actual accomplishments of the program, in terms of positive benefits for the peasantry, were negligible. Later, the resulting widespread discontent of thousands of Iranian villagers would contribute to the shah's downfall. In the first major study of the effects of this widely publicized program, Eric Hooglund's analysis demonstrates that the primary motives behind the land reform were political. Attempting to supplant the near-absolute authority of the landlord class over the countryside, the central government hoped to extend its own authority throughout rural Iran. While the Pahlavi government accomplished this goal, its failure to implement effective structural reform proved to be a long-term liability. Hooglund, who conducted field research in rural Iran throughout the 1970s and who witnessed the unfolding of the revolution from a small village, provides a careful description of the development of the land reform and of its effects on the main groups involved: landlords, peasants, local officials, merchants, and brokers. He shows how the continuing poverty in the countryside forced the migration of thousands of peasants to the cities, resulting in serious shortages of agricultural workers and an oversupply of unskilled urban labor. When the shah's government was faced with mass opposition in the cities in 1978, not only did a disillusioned rural population fail to support the regime, but thousands of villagers participated in the protests that hastened the collapse of the monarchy.

Book Citizens Participation in Urban Planning and Development in Iran

Download or read book Citizens Participation in Urban Planning and Development in Iran written by Hans-Liudger Dienel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent years, the topic of participation has increasingly been gaining importance in Iran – in the scientific field, in practice and rhetoric. However, in current scientific literature – and especially in English literature – there is little knowledge on the conditions, legal background, perceptions, experiences and processes of citizens’ participation in Iran. This book aims to shed light on the paradoxical question of participation in Iran: it is old and new, dysfunctioning and functioning, disappointing and promising. This slippery status of participation convinces scholars to suggest contradictory interpretations and understandings about the existence, functionality, and potentiality of this concept. The book therefore shows the different perspectives, interpretations, historical developments and case studies of participation in Iran, thus giving the reader a kaleidoscope view on the question of participation in Iran.

Book Full Employment and Social Justice

Download or read book Full Employment and Social Justice written by Michael J. Murray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection investigates how full employment programs can sustain the economy and the environment, promote social justice, and reinvigorate local communities. The contributing authors focus on the formation of institutions to eliminate the opportunity gap for marginalized populations, enact environmentally sustainable methods of production and consumption, and rebuild local economies through education, training, and community redevelopment programs. They argue that the formation and implementation of a federally funded, locally operated Job Guarantee program is a vital component to address a variety of complex and interweaving concerns. Through the formation of alternative institutions and encouraging local economies, the Job Guarantee approach has the potential to alter economic, social, and political structures away from an exploitative market-oriented structure toward one that is refocused on humanity and the sustainability of the earth and its peoples, cultures, and communities.

Book Mixed Method Evaluation of Watershed Management

Download or read book Mixed Method Evaluation of Watershed Management written by Bahram Mohammadi Golrang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume evaluates technical and social aspects of a watershed management program in the Kush-Abad Watershed Basin in Iran. Author Bahram Mohammadi Golrang offers a way forward for a more integrated means to evaluate large scale rural environmental management projects, their effects on the physical environment, how to engage the public in such projects, and how nearby communities interact with them and perceive their effects. The analysis presented here focuses on land treatment efforts initiated by the Watershed Management Organization of Iran, and evaluation spans the project-planning stage through the project’s implementation to citizens’ perceptions of the project after it was completed. Project planners – especially those in developing countries – will find the lessons in this case study very useful in planning technically sound projects that achieve participation and satisfaction from local populations.
