Book The Figure of the Nymph in Early Modern Culture

Download or read book The Figure of the Nymph in Early Modern Culture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the early modern period, the nymph remained a powerful figure that inspired and informed the cultural imagination in many different ways. Far from being merely a symbol of the classical legacy, the nymph was invested with a surprisingly broad range of meanings. Working on the basis of these assumptions, and thus challenging Aby Warburg’s famous reflections on the nympha that both portrayed her as cultural archetype and reduced her to a marginal figure, the contributions in this volume seek to uncover the multifarious roles played by nymphs in literature, drama, music, the visual arts, garden architecture, and indeed intellectual culture tout court, and thereby explore the true significance of this well-known figure for the early modern age. Contributors: Barbara Baert, Mira Becker-Sawatzky, Agata Anna Chrzanowska, Karl Enenkel, Wolfgang Fuhrmann, Michaela Kaufmann, Andreas Keller, Eva-Bettina Krems, Damaris Leimgruber, Tobias Leuker, Christian Peters, Christoph Pieper, Bernd Roling, and Anita Traninger.

Book Die Nymphe Noris

Download or read book Die Nymphe Noris written by Johann Helwig and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitive text of important prose eclogue, Baroque German's contribution to western literary genres. Prose eclogue, invented by Martin Opitz and perfected in Nuremberg during the 1640s, is perhaps the only original contribution of the German Baroque to the catalogue of western literary genres. Recently, Baroque scholars have recognized that the little-known Die Nymphe Noris, composed in 1650 by the physician and early Pegnitz Shepherd Johann Hellwig (1609-1674), a sequel to the paradigmatic works by Georg Philipp Harsdörffer, Johann Klaj and Sigmund von Birken, is in fact their equal, a highly inventive artifact worthy of serious attention in its own right: Noris forcefully exploits the negative potential of the Vergilian pastoral tradition to criticize blood nobility's privileged status vis-à-vis the nobilitas literata. Working from copies in both Europe and America, Professor Reinhart has established a definitive critical edition of the text (previously only available in the U.S. and U.K. on microfilm), including an introduction outlining the use of prose eclogue as a vehicle for the social mission of the early Pegnesischer Blumenorden. This book will be of interest to literary and cultural historians of early modern Germany, especially Nuremberg, to scholars of the European Baroque and European culture, and to bibliophiles. PROFESSOR REINHARTis associate professor of German at the University of Georgia.

  • Author : Shyon Baumann
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-05
  • ISBN : 0691187282
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Dream It Do It

Download or read book Dream It Do It written by Marty Sklar and published by Disney Electronic Content. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marty Sklar was hired by The Walt Disney Company after his junior year at UCLA, and began his Disney career at Disneyland in July 1955, the month before the park opened. He spent his first decade at Disney as "the kid," the very youngest of the creative team Walt had assembled at WED Enterprises. But despite his youth, his talents propelled him forward into substantial responsibility: he became Walt's speech writer, penned Walt's and Roy's messages in the company's annual report, composed most of the publicity and marketing materials for Disneyland, conceived presentations for the U.S. government, devised initiatives to obtain sponsors to enable new Disneyland developments, and wrote a twenty-four-minute film expressing Walt's philosophy for the Walt Disney World project and Epcot. He was Walt's literary right-hand man. Over the next forty years, Marty Sklar rose to become president and principal creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, and he devoted his entire career to creating, enhancing, and expanding Walt's magical empire. This beautifully written and enlightening book is Marty's own retelling of his epic Disney journey, a grand adventure that lasted over half a century.
