Because νόμος diachronically and synchronically had various meanings in history, the context in which it is found is significant. Given the context of Galatians, while Paul negatively depicts νόμος as the written Mosaic law throughout the letter, he positively uses it as a device for striking the ears of the Galatians in the verse. Remarkably, 6:2 is in 5:13--6:10 called paraenesis, namely, exhortations that they should perform with the Christian principle of life made by the Spirit. Being led by the Spirit is the sine qua non for believers in Christ. All indications surrounding 6:2 show that the phrase, ὁ νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ in 6:2 means "the principle created by Christ," that is, "keeping in step with the Spirit." This principle results from the new era inaugurated by the crucified and risen Christ. In 6:2 Paul exhorts the people of the new era to conform to the new era's principle created by Christ.

I place my work within broader scholarship's trajectory by explaining my thesis-- that the nomos in the phrase refers to "principle," unwritten law, rather than written law such as the Mosaic law and another law-- briefly addressing my intended method. Chapter 2 briefly investigates the usages of nomos from 7th century BC and AD 2nd century and paves the way for its various possible meanings. With the certainty that the meaning of a word is revealed in the context in which it is found, I argue that nomos in the phrase in 6:2 refers to "principle," unwritten law in the situational context of Galatians. I also reveal that the verb anaplē roō, which takes the phrase as a direct object, means conforming to a certain standard. Chapter 3 focuses on the new era referred to in the phrase in 6:2. In order to highlight how the new era is depicted in Galatians, I explore the hupo phrases to signify the old era. Along with the coming of Christ in history, I give much attention to the fact that two epochal events, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ, brought about the end of the old era and the beginning of the new era. Chapter 4 centers on Paul's exhortation to conform to the principle of the new era in 6:2 within the broader context of Galatians. Specifically, after investigating Paul's eschatology in Galatians, I reveal that Paul emphasizes the aspects of the "already" and of the overlapping ages rather than the "not yet" to awaken the identity of the Galatians who are the people of the new era. Chapter 5 summarizes and synthesizes the material, showing that in 6:2 Paul's appeal to bear one another's burdens refers to the believers' conformity to the principle of the new era inaugurated by the crucified and risen Christ in the overlapping ages.

Book excerpt: In discussions of Paul's letters, much attention has been devoted to statements that closely identify Christ with Israel's God (i.e., 1 Cor 8:6). However, in Rom 3:30 and Gal 3:20, Paul uses the phrase "God is one" to link Israel's monotheistic confession and the inclusion of the Gentiles in the people of God. Therefore, this study traces the OT and early Jewish backgrounds of the phrase "God is one" and their possible links to Gentile inclusion. Following this, Christopher Bruno examines the two key Pauline texts that link the confession of God as one with the inclusion of the Gentiles. Bruno observes a significant discontinuity between the consistent OT and Jewish interpretations of the phrase and Paul's use of "God is one" in relation to the Gentiles. In the both the OT and earlyJewish literature, the phrase functions as a boundary marker of sorts, distinguishing the covenant people and the Gentiles. The key exception to this pattern is Zech 14:9, which anticipates the confession of God as one expanding to the nations. Similarly, in Romans and Galatians, the phrase is not aboundary marker, but rather grounds the unity of Jew and Gentile. The contextand arguments in Rom 3:30 and Gal 3:20 lead to the conclusion that Paul's monotheism must now be understood in light of the Christ event; moreover, Zech14:9 may play a significant role in the link between Paul's eschatological monotheism and his argument for the inclusion of the Gentiles in Romans and Galatians.
