Book The Sacred Project of American Sociology

Download or read book The Sacred Project of American Sociology written by Christian Smith and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacred Project of American Sociology shows, counter-intuitively, that the secular enterprise that everyday sociology appears to be pursuing is actually not what is really going on at sociology's deepest level. Sociology today is in fact animated by sacred impulses, driven by sacred commitments, and serves a sacred project. This book re-asserts a vision for what sociology is most important for, in contrast with its current commitments, and calls sociologists back to a more honest, fair, and healthy vision of its purpose.

Book Sociology in the United States of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sociology in the United States of America Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociology in the United States of America It is no longer feasible for one to master all phases of sociological research findings in the United States. We therefore deemed the best trend report to be a team report. The project was initiated in March 1955 and completed four months later. I would like to express my thanks to the contributors of this publication who, in spite of other commitments, were able to meet the tight time schedule of this project with such creditable articles. The review is limited to the post war period. Since no previous publication of this kind is available, the authors have been encouraged to state briefly the history of their fields. The difficulties in surveying the vast amount of research of the past decade within the narrow limits of this publication have been considerable. Certain omissions have been necessary, the most important of which is the field of demography, which is usually considered a part of sociology in the United States. However, the international exchange of demographic research is already well established and the benefits of including it in this book would be small. American sociology lacks a tradition of periodical reviews and surveys of the literature. We are grateful to Unesco for initiating this kind of service, which is undoubtedly necessary for any science of the maturity and scope of sociology. The chapters in this book illustrate some different models for such reviews, and these should be of great interest to those who in the future are to build up this worthwhile tradition of periodical reviews. May I also express my appreciation to Miss Lois Roth for bibliographical assistance and to the Bureau of Applied Social Research at Columbia University for handling some of the clerical details of this project. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the word “sociology” was coined in Europe, the field of sociology grew most dramatically in America. Despite that disproportionate influence, American sociology has never been the subject of an extended historical examination. To remedy that situation—and to celebrate the centennial of the American Sociological Association—Craig Calhoun assembled a team of leading sociologists to produce Sociology in America. Rather than a story of great sociologists or departments, Sociology in America is a true history of an often disparate field—and a deeply considered look at the ways sociology developed intellectually and institutionally. It explores the growth of American sociology as it addressed changes and challenges throughout the twentieth century, covering topics ranging from the discipline’s intellectual roots to understandings (and misunderstandings) of race and gender to the impact of the Depression and the 1960s. Sociology in America will stand as the definitive treatment of the contribution of twentieth-century American sociology and will be required reading for all sociologists. Book Sociology and the Public Agenda

Download or read book Sociology and the Public Agenda written by William J. Wilson and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1993-03-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editor of this volume asserts that sociology's ostrich-like stance threatens to leave the discipline in a position of irrelevance to the world at large and compromises the support of policymakers, funders, media and the public. Wilson's vision is of a sociology attuned to the public agenda, influencing public policy through both short and long-range analysis from a sociological perspective. Using a variety of policy issues, perspectives, methods and cases, the distinguished contibutors to this volume both demonstrate and emphasize Wilson's ideas.
