Book The Evolution of Modern Economic Theory

Download or read book The Evolution of Modern Economic Theory written by Carl Cone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long paper which gives the title to this collection and which has never before been published as paperback was initially an attempt to promote international academic understanding. The Economics Department at the London School of Economics had arranged a colloquy between two groups of Russian and British economists; and where the author asked to contribute a general survey of the present state of economic theory as taught in Western centers. For reasons, which are explained in the opening section, the author decided to adopt an historical approach; and the notes on which the present paper is based were the result. The remainders of the papers have as their common denominator a continuing interest in the history of economic thought. Beginning with a lengthy critique of Schumpeter's magisterial History of Economic Analysis, they range from an appraisal of Bentham's continuing relevance to a review of Robertson's Lectures on Economic Principles, with some special attention to John Stuart Mill both as a human being and as an economist. They have been written at various times in the last thirty-five years; and minute scrutiny, if such were thought to be worthwhile--which of course it is not--might detect some variations of emphasis, particularly perhaps in the implicit valuations of Marshall and his contribution, in the papers on Wicksteed and Schumpeter's History respectively. But in spite of a certain shift of perspective here, the author thought it worthwhile to attempt substantial redrafting.Apart from the correction of obvious inelegances or actual errors, the excision of some duplicating quotations and, in a few cases, the addition of supplementary material and references, the papers are reproduced as originally written. In each instance the author has given footnote acknowledgements of the place of original publication.

Book The Economy for the Common Good and Its Enemies The Different Positions of Proponents and Critics of the ECG Propositions

Download or read book The Economy for the Common Good and Its Enemies The Different Positions of Proponents and Critics of the ECG Propositions written by Simon Valentin and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 1,0, Hertie School of Governance, language: English, abstract: At a time at which the persistent socio-economic crisis is increasingly perceived as a systemic, multiple crisis rather than a cyclical one and at which the traditional economic models are called into question, there is a need to develop new models that respond better to the demands of today’s world by promoting a way of fair and sustainable development. This has led to the resurgence of old and the emergence of new alternative streams of thought that contrast the traditional neoclassical paradigm. However, despite the flourishing critical debate over the current form of capitalism and its underlying economic assumptions, concrete alternative economic models are hard to find. The Economy of the Common Good (ECG), born in Vienna in October of 2010 as a movement of social innovation, is an expression of such a new economic model that places people and the functioning of their relations at the heart of economic activity. Unlike most movements that advocate for a change in the economic system, the ECG does not only have a vague idea of what is going wrong in the current capitalist system but presents a detailed alternative system, that is open for debate. Moreover, besides being an interesting utopia, a still small but growing number of initiatives, individuals, firms, and (local) governments all over the world commit themselves to the ECG and adjust their economic behavior, so that the ECG has also very concrete impacts. Both, the concrete nature of the propositions as well the happening change at the ground, make the ECG open for attack and lead to the ideas being highly contested. In contrast to most critical social movements that coexist with the orthodox mainstream, the ECG has caused a lot of criticism and resistance from economists and economic interest groups. Since today, the debate is conducted in a polemic and non-scientific way and neither the ECG nor its opponents put their position in a theoretical context, although implicitly drawing on existing ideas of economic philosophy. The debate reveals the often blurred clash of paradigms and normative principles about the governance of the economy within the capitalist society. This paper seeks to exemplify and evaluate this clash with the debate on the ECG and answer the question: How are the different positions of proponents and critics of the ECG-propositions on the governance of the economy informed and driven by economic paradigms?

Book Alfred Marshall Progress and Politics Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Alfred Marshall Progress and Politics Routledge Revivals written by David Reisman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, Alfred Marshall: Progress and Politics provides an enlightening insight into Marshall's thoughts on social improvement, adaptive upgrading, policy and polity. He planned books on these subjects which he never subsequently wrote, but the thesis of this work is that a close study of such writings as Marshall did complete makes possible a very detailed reconstruction of the important contribution which Marshall was capable of making to Victorian evolutionary thought (much in the shadow of Darwin and Spencer). In the ongoing debate on the political element in political economy, he reveals himself to have been as much an eclectic as was Adam Smith and as much a man of commitment as was T. H. Green.

Book Development Economics

Download or read book Development Economics written by John Knapp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the problems of underdeveloped economies has increased since the early 1950s, and is now a primary topic in university courses. When this book was originally published, it reflected a sense among some economists that current, orthodox economic theory is inadequate in this field. The volume includes leading American and non-American economists. The discussion of the content of courses was, in the nature of things, an extension of the discussion on the state of knowledge and reflects the period immediately prior to initial publication. Some of the issues continue to be debated, including the balance of instruction between macro- and micro-economics, the place of mathematics and econometrics, the question of the desirability of linking the study of economics with studies in administration, languages, political science, sociology or even engineering.Development economics is now an established subject in the teaching curricula of most universities. The attention of the volume is focused on the problems of creating courses of study in subjects relevant to development within some framework specially designed for the purpose. The problems of organizing such courses concerned the length of courses, the type of students to which they would cater, the qualifications and standards required for admission and successful completion of courses, and so on.The balance of instruction between macro- and micro-economics, the place of mathematics and econometrics, the question of the desirability of linking the study of economics with studies in administration, languages (in connection with area studies), political science, sociology or even engineering, the merits of methods like case studies, workshops and training in field work, are all discussed.

Book Some Leading

Download or read book Some Leading written by John Elliott Cairnes and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Leading: Principles of Political Economy Newly Expounded Though the following work is an attempt to recast some considerable portion of Political Economy, I should be sorry it were regarded as in any sense antagonistic in its attitude toward the science built up by the labors of Adam Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, and Mill. On the contrary, my hope is that it will - should its reasonings find acceptance - strengthen, in some sensible degree, and add consistence to that fabric. As regards those assumptions respecting human character and the physical conditions of external nature which constitute the ultimate premises of economic science, the position I have taken is identical with that of the four great writers I have named; and I have endeavored also to follow the method of combined deduction and verification by comparison with facts, which was theirs, and which is, as I believe, the only fruitful, or indeed possible method in economic inquiry. Nor do the final conclusions which I have reached differ very widely on any important points from those at which they had arrived. The points on which I have ventured to join issue with them are what, in Bacon's language, may be called the axiomata media of the science - those intermediate principles by means of which the detailed results are connected with the higher causes which produce them. If I have not deceived myself, there is in this portion of Political Economy, as at present generally received, no small proportion of faulty material; and the present work may be regarded as an attempt, so far as it goes, to replace this element of weakness with matter better fitted to endure the strain of modern criticism.
